In regard to summer being paid time or not - it is all in how you look at it - most jobs that require a college degree have a yearly salary - you can look at that as 52 40-hour weeks (2080 hours/year or 260 paid days) In professions outside of teaching, you earn vacation time after you have worked a certain amount of time - you don't get snow days, school holidays, summers, time off to attend functions (i.e. tournaments), you don't usually have someone do your job when you are off (i.e. substitutes), you don't get a planning period to run to town and do errands! and you don't get those 10 days of so that can be used for whatever they want. Teachers earn a yearly salary - you can divide that into 187 days or 12 months whatever you want - bottom line for both is it is a yearly salary that you can turn into an hourly/weekly or monthly figure as you want. I would love to have the hours teachers have because they correspond with my children's schedules. But working outside the teaching profession I can miss work and I don't have to worry what my absence is doing to the students - my work will be there when I return to the office. Kentucky needs to get a hold on instruction time - schedule meetings and professional days so they don't take teachers out of the classroom. Our children should get 187 days of instruction from a teacher - not a substitute. Substitutes should be for emergency situations. So to tie this in with this post - coaches should not be expected or expect to attend the daytime games of the tournment just because they are a coach! The tournment should be reformated. Too many people (adults and students) are out this week and it distrupts the week for everyone else.

I know a lot of people have changed schools and hid the details of the move, but this move is so out in the open anyone can follow the progress of it. If you have to replace a car or house - you always try to get everything you want - not just duplicate what you had - therefore in looking for a job it looks like Mr. Euton factored in all the needs of the family. In response to a previous thread on the only way single class basketball can survive is by expecting kids to play where they grow up - most students and families aren't going to be able to make moves like this or won't be high profile enough to draw attention to the move. I do believe students change schools just to play a sport, therefore the school administrations, communities and KHSAA need to be diligent in their watch of these moves or some programs could become revolving doors for athletes.

Another thought about home court advantage - I dont' think anyone would assume home court would guarantee a win against a decidedly better team - but it is nice for fans when they can follow their team in the tournament without traveling so much. So look at it as giving the fans the home court advantage when the location rotates

For all those worried about getting a ticket, I heard them announce at the Clark vs Campbell game that tickets could be bought at GRC for the next game - I assume all schools still participating will have tickets available at their school for advance purchase - this does not mean a reserved seat though.

What is the rest of the story - I know you post later that KHSAA found he was living in a different address than listed on the originial request for waiver - that in and of itself should not be a problem. Did he ever live in the address on the original waiver, is the new address still within the JC school district, does the family still own the property in the previous (before JC) school district - what is the rest of the story?

If the parents made a legitimate move, and followed the procedure to get a waiver for eligibility, I doubt there would have been a problem. If the parents or school failed to do the right thing (either by falsifying records, or failure to follow the procedure either by choice or lack of knowledge), I feel sorry for the student. But anyone (adult or student) changing schools in this day and time would have to have been living under a rock to not know their are rules about eligibility.

Remember most first round games don't have that big of a crowd. It would be similar to regular season games.

Can't really compare size of crowds for first round games because in the past I've chosen not to travel to some first round games for various reasons (too early, too late, my team was heavily favored or an extreme underdog). But at the Montgomery/Pendleton game I thought there was a good crowd for both and it looked like most sat in their assigned section (i.e. plenty of red on one side and blue on the other). It was mentioned that at the fieldhouse Mason County fans don't want to give up their seat during tourn time, but at the game last night Montgomery Co seemed to be sitting on their assigned side (I didn't see any blue on the Pendleton side) I did observe during the regular season Mason Co fans have a habit of sitting in the visitors section - which IMO is rude. An earlier post indicated that Mt. Sterling businesses would make up the difference in money for the teams assuming the gate receipts would be less. I would love to know the rationale behind this - what numbers would they use, why would local businesses just give money to other schools? I'm sure a lot of businesses have volunteered to help put on the tourn due to pride in the community and hopefully that will lead to a good financial return to the 10th region teams. I hope this is what was insinuated by that post. It is unfortunate that this year's weather is going to be a contributing factor to attendance. It would be fun for someone to put together the history - number in attendance at each of the games with additional info (i.e. teams rank in region, weather conditions, comparison to girls games and location of that tourn).

All 10th Region fans, parents, players who care should let their AD, principal or whoever is on the committee that makes these decisions know we want a change! The 5 and 8:30 start times are ridiculously early and late for school nights. Split sessions are totally unnecessary for first round games! In fact there is no reason the top seeded school shouldn't host the first round game at home. It has been done this way for so long the committee won't make a change unless we speak up.

Didn't Estill replace Mt. Sterling when Mt. Sterling merged with Montgomery Co in the late 70's? Not sure where Estill was before that.

Remember the school can still be at fault for not doing the paperwork right, even if they didn't influence the family to move there. Someone at the school has the responsibility for making sure the programs follow the rules and have accurate records. There has to be some accountability. Is the player being penalized as an individual (is he being allowed to participate) or is just the school being penalized (which I know involves the players)

Was the new address still within the district? Was the kid living with his legal guardian in the new location?

The eligibility questions don't arise when you attend a school other than where you are districted, unless you do it after you start high school. If you change schools you are supposed to sit out one year unless you have physically moved to a new address and KHSAA has granted you a waiver to play at the new school. If a student is moving for academics sitting out a year shouldn't be a problem. If the parents want their child to play for a certain school, then relocate to that school district and follow the rules the KHSAA has established to get a waiver.

I think you probably need to say less 39th Districtfans will be going - but more 40th District fans will have the opportunity to see the Regional games. 39th District fans will have to endure the hardship in getting to the games that 40th have had to endure for 40 years. I don't like the 5 pm game times no matter where the games are held, but it seems like the Region made this decision sometime ago and because it is so profitable, I don't see a change coming anytime soon.

When are the brackets drawn up for the Regional Tourns? Is is after the Districts are complete?

What's the big story in beating a team that is 4-19?

Kids stay back a grade or so when they can and play up when they can - the only thing people are tired of hearing is ". . . and he is only a freshman". He's a good kid, and a good player who is taking advantage of the opportunity to maximize his playing time. He should be given praise on his ability, but to constantly tout his performance as a "freshman" gives a distorted picture, because it sounds like he is not a 14 year old freshman.

There are hallways behind both sides of the bleachers. You don't have to walk in front of anyone to get from one side or end.

1. You all have debated the number of seats in the two facilities - but does anyone know the number that have actually attended each of the sessions in the past few years. Other than a few references to games that fans couldn't get into, it doesn't sound like the tournment games have been full to capacity. The number of seats available may be a mute issue for the majority of the games. 2. OK so a lot of Mason residents won't be able to make the trip to any other facility, don't you think a few of the other 10th region residents haven't been able to make it to the games because of the previous location. Sounds like the change will give some people a chance to go to the games.

Maybe the students are following the example sat by others in that they don't want to "sit where it is crowded". Give the students good role models. There were plenty of seats everywhere in the gym (although I thought the attendance was pretty good by today's standards). If you chose to sit on the MoCo side, I feel like there were other reasons besides space, because if you were bothered by the Mo Co fans you must have been right in the middle of the Mo Co section, therefore in a crowded situation that you were trying to avoid.

Are you a Montgomery or Mason fan? I was surpised at the pockets of Mason County fans sitting in the visitor section when the Home section wasn't full - what's the purpose of that?

I am sure you know it is wrong to quit, but it will happen when you use parent volunteers. Truth is there aren't enough volunteers who aren't parents. Some parents are priceless in what that do for the team, some are more trouble than they are worth. I suggest you try to have backups for most jobs if possible. I know this adds one more duty to the coach's role also - but it may be an area that could be delegated to someone - i.e. volunteer coordinator.

I've heard of several situations where the ref made the wrong call or no call because of an unusual situation they might not have seen before. Is there a method that these situations are collected and shared with referees for future reference? I understand in the SEC that coaches send information on questionable calls to person with that responsibililty and the ref's are brought up to speed on the rules, or not assigned to certain games for obvious reasons. I have the upmost respect for anyone wanting to be a referee and would hope most would want the information gathered and shared with them if it is not already done.

Are all the students paying the full tuition? It would look a lot more like recruiting if the students were given a break on tuition. If the parents are paying the tuition, it would be harder to prove recruiting.
