Schools don't exist to provide athletic teams for students - they exist to provide an education. The atletic and extra curricular activities are for those who attend the school. I don't think a parent who home schools would teach students from the school just because it would be good for some students -so by the same token why should home schooled children expect to participate in the school activities. We have to remember this issue isn't about a few students replacing a few students on a team - it is about the big picture. You abide by the choices you make. I have been around several families that home school. Most of the time the children are very prepared. The only thing they seem to struggle in is tolerance of those who have different views from theirs.

I was told the money schools get is based on the number of students enrolled in the school. But I really don't believe it is a money issue, I was just addressing a previous post. I believe if you don't like public schools well enough to attend the academic classes, why do you want (and be allowed) to participate in extra curricular? I agree with Ram, you can have anything you want but you can't have it all.

What about the taxpayers w/o children, or the taxpayer with one child who gets no more benefits than one with multiple children, or the unemployed who don't pay taxes - you can't rationalize homeshooled children playing sports because their parents pay taxes.

Sports and other extra curricular activities are the benefit of attending a school. If you don't like the education you get at that school, why be allowed to receive the benefit of participating in the activities.

No, they shouldn't be allowed. I know some may want to, but I can't think of any reason why they should be allowed.

You are right it should be it's own thread and has been - probably several times. I just have to say, you can't please everybody when scheduling events. No one can predict weather at the time this type event is planned (i. e. last year was fine); no one can predict who will be playing multiple sports. I hate to see good ideas dumped because it inconviences a few - and I am not just talking about the Border Bowl - almost everything overlaps now. It seems all sports "whine" about the other sports and it puts the students in a difficult spot.

Was the weather that much different in early December? This is only the second year and the weather was great last year. Basketball was going on in early December also? If you wanted to schedule it around basketball you would have to play in during the dead period.

Just for fun - don't you think every team is some team's "cupcake"?

What I really wanted to bring to the forefront with this thread is that there is a lot that goes into preparing a schedule - timing, previous committments, district requirements, fan appeal, team preparation, team morale. When the casual fan and parent compare teams based on their "weak" or "strong" schedule, they should remember these factors.

Should coaches only schedule teams that could go either way and teams that they probably won't beat and avoid teams that seem like obvious wins? What should the "mix" be in order to classify a schedule strong or weak? To what extent should geography and fan appeal ($$ at the gate) be considered?

When are the brackets determined for regional play? Are all districts (in the 10th) seeded?

It should be changed from "play off" which most people seem to think indicates it is earned - to "district tourn" like in basketball, baseball, softball and soccer where you progress as you win - in those sports it is called the second season - everyone starts out the same.

Are the brackets for this tourn on line anywhere?

Does everyone charge $5 admission to varsity basketball games? My school does, and I am curious if a lesser admission cost would increase attendance. Any thoughts?

There is a lot of planning and necessary coordination involved for Senior Night - a couple of questions though, were additional props used on the field, did the players and parents walk across the field, instead using the home side field area? If the introductions were elaborate ( I have seem some) - was the visiting coach forwarned? Give the visiting coach the benefit of the doubt unless there is some history there - they are concentrating on the game and usually not watching what is going on on the perimeter of the field. Sometime a little communication will eliminate the problems.

Actually there were 8 seniors - even though only 6 were available at the end of the season. Seniors are always hard to replace - but the MC coaches are excellent at developing players. After losing the outstanding seniors from the '07 season, they were able to develop the '07 juniors into a strong senior class and I feel confident they will do the same with the ten juniors they have this year.

Let's quit calling it "making it to the playoffs" In basketball post season starts with the district tourn - you don't have to "make it" to the district tournament. With the set up now, football is the same way - you are in the playoffs - you don't have to make it to the playoffs - post season play is what is should be called - or go back to the formulas that only allowed teams that qualified to participate in the the playoffs. There are definitely some districts where it could be a toss up between the four in the first round of play - and there are many more where the first round game won't amount to anything but one more game for those involved - because the outcome is obvious.

I think the first high school bowl game in Kentucky might have been the Recreation Bowl in 1948 in Mt. Sterling - it was a post season game then to raise funds for a recreation park. I think I have heard it was before organized playoffs and unofficially determined the state champ. The organizers were probably just cashing in on the bowl concept that colleges were using for post season games - (from Wikipedia -The history of the bowl game begins with the Tournament East-West football game, sponsored by the Tournament of Roses Association between Michigan and Stanford. The Tournament of Roses eventually sponsored an annual contest starting with the 1916 Tournament of Roses football game. With the 1923 Rose Bowl it began to be played at the newly completed Rose Bowl stadium, and thus the contest itself became known as the Rose Bowl game. The label "bowl" was attached to the festival name, even though the games were not always played in bowl-shaped stadiums.

I can appreciate Highlands reason for wanting to be 5A - to avoid travel, expense, and for the safety of the team - but that arguement can be used for the rural central Kentucky counties - very few that I am familiar with play in districts w/o a lot of travel time - we travel at 1 hour, 1 1/2 hours and 2 hours for our district games - that is just the way the numbers work - contiguous counties are 3A and 4A for us and our opponents. Highlands progam will be fine wherever they play - I am really more concerned with the majority of the programs. I know there isn't a simple solution, but maybe if enough people talk it out - someone will come up with a brillant plan. Although there is nothing wrong with wishing that the 5A championship could be won by a 5A school - just because you have an enrollment number doesn't guarantee you a successful program - you may have other obstacles. I am sure Lex Catholic is glad Highlands doesn't play 4A

Sorry - I don't know much about other states. Is your school one that is consistenly in the playoffs, one that is well-suited to it's current classification? I was thinking of the schools that are in a class because of their enrollment numbers but don't really fit in that class (program, geography, etc) - i.e rural schools. Just looking for a better idea
