Great choice for Cawood Coach Perry is very solid and will give the Trojans a new look. Look for him to go into the middle schools and make sure the kids that can help will be on the field and not in study hall.

Coach Hensley had a very good record at East Jess. which is about the same size as the new school will be. Also (whyme) I did not mean to suggest that Mr. Saylor would settle for a .500 coach but that it would be difficult to pull that off under the conditions that are facing this district.

I hear that some of the middle school coaches want to get a look and will apply if it is posted. If not, look for a proven assistant to get the job for one or two years until the opening of the new school.

As of this afternoon Cawood Principal Mike Ashurst had a press release that was to inform the media outlets that effective Jan. 8th football coach Frank Smith has resigned. The time table for a new coach was not given but there are some names that are out in the rumor mill.

Whyme, you totally missed what I was talking about, to hire a NAME coach they generally want to bring some of their own coaches with them. What I was saying is that it would be hard to get teaching jobs when you are going to place three schools into one. Futhermore do not try to put a negitive spin on my comments, as UNLIKE you I do live here and want the new school to be a shinning success on and off the playing fields.

This will be an interesting hire for a number of reasons, to get a "name" coach most would want to bring in some staff members of their own, and with the consolidation of three schools and the budget problems facing this district that will be a hard sell. Next will be the situation of playing time for these kids now you have at least 15 kids per team getting most of the playing time thats 45 players looking to get on the field and thats not going to happen, so in this day and age for instant fame some kids (parents) will bolt for Harlan City or some may go to Bell Co.

This Cawood team is not one of the better one's in coach Nolan's tenure but they do play hard and have some fair players but no one that can take a game over. Cumberland is clearly the better team but they still have to go the dome and get a win. That might be a tough task since it has not happened in a few years.

Although I am a big Green Dragon fan and supporter I too would like to say thanks to the young men in Orange and white. Good group of kids that played there hearts out continued success in all that you do.

Tell em D-2 that we are very tired of hearing that the only reason that the game last week was a 7-point game because of the wet field. Being a fellow Dragon I agree that we don't get the same respect as some teams on this site. But thats just me, I know from talking to friends from the Burg that they feel like we only beat them because they had some kids banged up. Guys that's just football kids will have some injury but an 18 point win is still 3 touchdown's the way I add anyway.The best thing is that it's friday and time for the old has been's to stop typing and let kids settle it. This is Coach Donahue's best team since the 99 team that was a war club. Present assisiant coach Shoope's senior year, what a player he was. This year's team seams to be on a mission to do something great and after last Friday it is up to them as to how long that they play, it could be a few more weeks.

This game might be a bit closer than most on here think. Skins have a few weapons of their own and could get things going at the patch and could get the upset of the early rounds. Heart says take the boys from c-town but logicial thinking says them rabbits will be ready. Somerset 45 Cumberland 32

Weather could play a factor in the mind set of the teams. The powers that be in Somerset wanted to change the game to Saturday for some reason (Wind and Rain)probably money.

I have waited for about a month for this matchup between two really nice 1-A ball clubs. Matchups will be the key word for this game. Harlan's D will be tested early and often by the passing attack of the jumpers. They must be able to get some heat on Deaton and disrupt his decision making, and not let them get into a good offensive rythem. Harlan must be the AGRESSOR early in the 1st Qt. and get the jumpers reeling from a very phyisical contest. If this happens then the Dragons will pull out a nice win on the road. If not then them very fast Rabbits could pull away late and win by 10-14. My gut says that my boys in Green will be up to the task and take the #1 seed into the playoffs.

Cawood has played better than usual this year but they still haven't found any team speed and that is where this game will be won, even in the slop. Washington and Gilliam get ready for the playoffs. C-Land 35-20

James A Cawood, Cumberland, and Evarts High Schools will form the Harlan County Bears.

Cumberland has not helped themselves by playing better competion in non district games, it seems that they are always 7-3 ,6-4 ,and not making the playoffs. Phelps, Jenkins and sisters of the poor do not help make your team into a playoff ready team. So I see the Campers winning and getting Big Dave back where he belongs. In the hunt.

Dragon Slayer if you are from Harlan Co. its been a while since you slayed your last DRAGON I think the Boys In Green Are a robust 6-0 in the last six meetings with county teams, nice trend. That said M-Boro is a big test and I think this team is up to the level that it will take to knock off Coach Ro's boys.So Pappy call me a homer too. Harlan 29 Boro 27 .

Next week will tell how well Harlan's D will fair against a speed team, as they step up in class and go to Lee Majors Field and take on Roark's Runners. This test will go a long way in telling how late in the year the Dragons will be playing.

I told everyone that the Trojans would find a way to loose this one, and they did.

Harlan put together one of their best all around games in this one. QB had a really nice game his decision making was vastly improved,and his ability to get Will Pope more touches makes this team more well rounded, and a definite regional contender. I know that the Jumpers are tough but I think this years Dragons have a lot of grit in their tank.

Hazard is very quick but also very young they got their head down against a much improved Harlan squad for a poor showing at home. The once proud Hazard fans do not come out and support their team like one would expect from a school that has as much tradition as they have. So MP-10 says its one and out for the dogs.

WTUK-FM has a great voice that sometimes gets leftout of some of their broadcasts. Jackie Cornett is very good doing all areas of a game from play -by- play to color to on the field reporting . When Jackie does the PBP and Tim Saylor does the color they make a 1st rate team, but this arangement does not happen often, due to loyallty to the first sports voice. The guys heart is there but the listener never really knows what is going on, so when you can get cornett and Saylor in the booth its going to be the most knowledgeable crew that I have herd in the area.
