  1. I think that the term refined would be the best way to describe some of the "CROW'S" schemes he was using during his days as a coach at Harlan and Cumberland. What I have observed is that they were able to change some basic formations to fit the ever changing class A talent pool. IMO that is what a good coach does, but I have seen the lights burning late on Cumberland Ave. and if my sources are right he is really on to something new and exciting it is round and rolls and I heard that he is naming it THE WHEEL!!
  2. Will someone in the media please give credit to coach Derrick Akal for this nice run by the skins!
  3. LB you know what they say about assumptions! I did not in any way say that the success that Cawood enjoyed was only because of transfer students, but even you must admit that it did help. Also if you think my version of these events are untrue go ask someone that was in the thick of it, former Cawood Head Coach, and Harlan High standout Frank Smith.
  4. This will be my third attempt to respond to this question of why. Not dodging anything just had some family issues that had to be dealt with. So here goes, from the start of Cawood High School till the football season of 73 Harlan had not lost a game of any sort to CHS. About this time along came Boyd Fox as the football coach at Cawood, he had a big ego and an even bigger mouth and he did what had to be done at CHS that to change the mind set of we are not going to the step children any more.On this end of the county Harlan was the traditional school and did not want to have Cawood as an equal. That being said one issue stands out to be the thing to have put this thing on tilt. In 72 Harlan had elected for their football queen a young lady that just happend to be black and the night that she was to be crowned it came a big rain storm and the powers that be decided not to hold the cermonies.(big mistake). The black community at this time was a pretty large group at HHS during this era and played a central role in the success in sports that Harlan acheived. After this some of the families of the black students felt that HHS was not being fair to their children and decided to send a few students to the county school. So during the football season of 73 Cawood put out a very good football team and waxed Harlan and most every school that they played, but one of the students that transferred from Harlan to Cawood did not have the grades when he left Harlan to play, and Fox allowed him to play anyway. This action caused an investigation from the KHSAA and Cawood had to forfiet any game that this student played in.When all the dust setteled from this the adminastration at HHS decided that they would not play Cawood in any sport that was not mandated by tournment rule. Their reasoning was that Cawood would go to any length to win and that HHS did not have to be a part of it.So as you can see the HHS powers were a little short sided on the issue and in the early 70s change was hard to accept. This account of what happened is what I and a few students remember to be the reason of the gap in the two schools playing for many years.
  5. Whatever the decision somebody will be sad because he does a great job with both.
  6. There were over 50 in the workouts yesterday saw them for myself, there will be some new faces and some much needed speed for the new staff to work with.
  7. North has a losing record no matter why or with who playing I guess if you are not in the 49 or 50 Les does not consider your results.
  8. The real coach from Cumberland Derrick Akal should be COY in the 13th hands down, last year winning only about 5 games to 18 or better with the same kids. "Please, no contest". Plus an all A Regional championship.
  9. What sort of research could you be doing on BGP?
  10. Harlan may sqeak in just on Smith's ability to score from anywhere on the floor, but top 10 may not get to the region.
  11. NG shouldn't you be in class at this time? And by the way stop correcting your elders because this is all we have left. lol
  12. LB, I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but in today's HDE, Harlan IND. comes in 1st. in the governors cup for the 52nd district with a score that beat all of the county high school's combined. Before you come back with test scores are not the only measuring stick, this is what our leaders look at when they are assessing our schools.
  13. Final, not much D in this game, Harlan led by at least 26 in the 1st half and held on to win.
  14. Whyme, I have no idea where you get your info but none of the coaches were called in on the carpet today or any other day. You might as well either bring it or drop it because one coach would welcome your challenge.(Probably all)
  15. Not many humans had the passion for the game as John had. Pure ANIMAL But what do you expect he is from RIO!!! Loyall suburb. lol
  16. Not to date myself or anything but JR. High Football as it was called, started in 1971 and each school , Loyall, Hall, Wallins, Evarts, Cumberland, Benham, Lynch, and Harlan all fielded teams. And this was a very good league. IMVHO!
  17. Lungbuster should be getting in touch with HDE about doing some writing for the HDE.
  18. Great win for the Lions, JD is old school and that makes me happy for him and his kids. I guess the fine backers of CCHS are wondering why they never really warmed up to Coach Mike Jones like they should have, with all due respect to the Lions I don't remember any of his teams having a loss like this.
  19. This was one of the best posts that I have read since joining the BGP site. So many parents loose their direction when they are worring about little Johnny getting to play in college. The shear numbers of kids that get to play at the next level from this area are so small that it seems to me we should be spending most of our time drilling our kids in math and science these are two areas that most of them will really need when they go pro!
  20. So does this mean that you are backtracking on your original posts about all of this contacting that is suppose to be happening? (I may be wrong but I don't think that Harlan has a her as a Head Coach.)
  21. I am not sure but sometime there were two teams that were made up from the feeder schools to Cawood, West Harlan and JACHS, Wallins,Rosspoint, and maybe Green Hills, made up the West team and Hall and Cawood Ele. made up the Jachs team.
  22. What is the 2007 schedule for the dragons who is added and who is gone? What do you think there record will be?
  23. With todays technology it would be real easy to confirm these accusations, so if there is none then I think this thread should get back to where it was meant to go, HHS football 2007. For everyone's sake!
  24. Will someone in cyberspace please redirect me for I am lost and looking for the place to discuss the fortunes of the HHS football team for the 2007 season.
