Somerset 56 Evarts 6

Somerset came away with a win at probably the last football game ever to be played at Evarts High School. Somerset had 425 yards of total offense, 201 passing and 224 running. Evarts had 311 yards of total offense, 91 passing and 220 running. Both teams had 11 1st down in the game.

Evarts, Cumberland, and Cawood in Harlan County each have one more year.

Looks like the stage is set for a Somerset/Harlan matchup for the district championship. Somerset will be favored, but the Dragons will have their say. Could even play twice! Lordy ain't football grand?!

They probably will play twice. I just think that the Jumpers have too much offense for anyone in the district this year. Tonight it was 42-6 early in the second quarter. Evarts had a couple of skill postion player back tonight that they were missing early in the year. The Evarts touchdown came on a kickoff return, the Jumper defense while still a ummmm work in progress did the job tonight. The stat sheet shows Somerset with more rushing yards than passing yards and Cole not getting a touch until the 2nd quarter.......winning that easily with those stats can't make the rest of the district feel too good about their chances. I know that no one is going to roll over for Somerset but it will be a big upset if they are seriously threatened before playing Pikeville in the playoffs.

The Dragon D will be a "lot" stiffer than Evarts. Somerset is a scoring machine. The Dragon offense was much improved last night. At least there is no mystery to who will play for the regular season championship of our district. Of course Harlan has to beat Pineville. Who does Somerset have left in the district?

Good win for the Jumpers. Got off the bus a little rough but woke up to play after the first couple of drives. Somersets offense was clicking as usual, with more than the usual suspects. Defense really looked like a well oiled machine tonight. Technically the defense posted a shutout, with the only points being given up on special teams. A couple of Evarts runs were big runs that bursted into the secondary, but then a 3 and out came 3 plays later. The Jumper D was able to fight back after a big play and hold the Wildcats. Not something you are used to seeing from this Defense.

Pineville @ Home

Lynn Camp @ Lynn Camp

Harlan @ Home

Somerset has Pineville and Lynn Camp left on the schedule before Harlan. I know that Harlan's d will be better than Evarts. It better be a lot better, didn't Harlan struggle with Cumberland, the same team Somerset beat 69-27? I think Harlan has a good team I just think the rest of the district is a little behind Somerset speed wise. Since Somerset joined the district in 2003 they are now 18-3 in regular season games with an average game of 42.4 to 18.1. I think they leave this district at 21-3 with 3 titles in 4 years. The games still have to be played and anything can happen but it will take a big upset for anyone in this district to beat the Jumpers this year.

Speed kills, no doubt. Harlan will have its hands full. See ya in Somerset!

Although if you take the average score of the Somerset-Harlan game over the last 3 years its only 24-17 Somerset and Harlan is the only team in 21 games in district play to keep the Jumpers out of the end zone in their 32-3 win in 2004 so they must have a better idea of how to stop the Jumpers than the rest of the district. Could be a good one, I'll take the Jumpers by about 17.

Next week will tell how well Harlan's D will fair against a speed team, as they step up in class and go to Lee Majors Field and take on Roark's Runners. This test will go a long way in telling how late in the year the Dragons will be playing.
