Not 100% sure but I would imagine the age restrictions for high school athletes is a National Federation rule and not state specific.

Don't know the details when he left but sounds like there might have been some bridges burnt when he headed to New Jersey?? If this is a case of the LexCath coaches and administrators taking a stand and saying you can't just jump ship and come back without consequences then I think you have to applaud the stand they are taking.

I saw Beechwood a few times over the summer and thought that they had all the parts to compete in the district and region this year. Their bigs are a legit 6'4" and have some skills. They got a lot of good experience at the varsity level last year. They have already matched up with Thelen last year so there won't be any surprises this year. Fangman is a legitimate scorer and has improved athletically. Nussbaum is solid at the point and is a fearless competitor. I do question their depth but you can say that about anybody in the 9th Region this year. I think in most years they are a middle of the road team but in this years 9th Region where there is so much parity and no outstanding team why not Beechwood? Shumate is a good coach and he is going to play his young guys early and he usually plays a good non conference schedule to prepare for the district. If Beechwood gets hot at the right time they can make a run just like 8 other teams in the region this year.

I think Boone is one of the top 3-4 teams in the 9th Region this year. Brown is just an absolute beast as a high school player and Crabtree was one of the most improved players that I saw over the summer. Montgomery and Brown are both top 10 players in the region. With that being said they are only going to go as far as their guard play will take them. The times that I saw Boone play over the summer their guards really struggled.

Brossart will have a difficult time replacing Rieger, Armstrong and the rest of last seasons very solid senior class. However, they are still in contention to win the very competitive 37th District with Campbell County and Scott. Brossart is going to guard and run their system to perfection and make opponents life generally miserable no matter who is on their roster.

Personally I will take the Romes/Beuttel Beechwood squad as being Shimates most talented team. I think Shumate is one of the top coaches in the region. Beechwood has been relevant in basketball since he has been there. I think this team has all the parts to make a run in the district and regional this year. They are young but they have some size, good PG play and a shooter in Fangman. In most years a middle of the pack 9th Region team but in this years region with all of the parity Beechwood could make a run.

Older brother Seth is a senior at LexCath. Not sure if there is another brother in the pipeline.

I thought Hester was a better HS pg than Bibbins. Thought he had a more complete game while Bibbins was more of a scorer. I also thought Hester bought more to the table in the way of intangibles to the position. As good as Hester was at the HS level he was probably even better playing AAU for a very good Shining Star team. I also thought that Bibbins wouldn't do a whole lot at NKU and that NKU was a reach for him. Turns out he has a great career at NKU so what do I know! I am rooting for Hester as he was one of my favorite HS players for his toughness and competitiveness but when you are a 6' or under PG it's not easy to succeed at the college level. It's all about the situation and Bibbins put himself in a great spot at NKU. Not sure if that same situation exists at NKU right now.

I think its a solid representation of where the teams are at this moment. Ryle and Highlands split over the season with Ryle winning the last game. Ryle also has the OT win over SK.

Holy Cross team that lost to Scott in region finals after beating a pretty good Holmes team I think in the semi's???

I think Giesler is the top player in the 9th Region but I could make a pretty good argument for Thelen or Stauffer as well. Until Hodges production starts to catch up with his potential I don't think he should be mentioned with the other 3 guys.

Open enrollment is always thought to be an issue with Scott and it's struggles in football but I really don't think they lose that many athletes to SK or Dixie in any sport. If you want to look at where they struggle to keep athletes from attending look at Holy Cross. Holy Cross has quite a few athletes who came up thru the "feeder" system and ended up in Latonia. If HC had not started a football program or if Scott had had more success would those kids have considered Scott.

Guard everyone seems to be overlooking is Reidinger. He provides team with consistent long range shooter. If he can knock down shots teams will not be able to clog the middle on Thelen.

Wow.....the whole GRC team in the top 10? Couldn't bump a few guys off the list for their first couple of players off of the bench?

I like Dixie as one of the top 2-3 teams in the 9th. Trammel, Hatton, Pike and Stansberry are as good or better than anybody elses 4 in the region. Not sure who is going to step up and be that 5th starter or what kind of depth they might have this year. If everybody stays healthy they have as good a shot as anyone but you can probably say that about 8 teams this year in the region

I hve seen him 4-5 times on the high school level and never have been that impressed. Did not see him at any of the bigger AAU events so I really have nothing to judge him on from that level. Ratings are always subjective and he is probably one of the players I might have missed on...... Where would you have him rated? Who does he best compare to?

Just to get this back on track 1. Kellen Smith Scott...HS BB is a guards game and he most well rounded guard with great intangibles & already committed at the D2 level 2. Jake Giesler NCC....Best big man in N Ky scores, defends and rebounds. 3. Jake Thelen CovCath....Great scorer and good rebounder. Needs to be a little better defensively. 4. Bobby Stauffer Ryle....Great intensity with solid skills. Working on perimeter game should help at the college level 5. Jack Stewart Highlands....Most improved player I saw over the summer. Will be big time player for Birds this season and close gap on Giesler, Thelen & Stauffer 6. Brandon Hatton Dixie....scoring ability overshadows overall game. Will need to defend better but he is a big time player 7. Travis Montgomery Boone Co...best athlete on the list but production needs to catch up to potential. Good all around skills 8. Matt Trammell Dixie....Might be rated higher if he played last year. If his quickness is back he is a force giving Dixie outstanding backcourt 9. Tyler Hodges Conner...makes list because of potential. Production needs to start to match potential. 10.Trevan Brown Boone Co....Physical post player who does well defending bigger players. Could average double/double this year 11. Tyler Fangman Beechwood...so close to top 10. Great shooter, underrated athletically. Should put up big numbers for Beechwood 12. Cody Chambers SK....Good all around guard who will be top 5 player his senior season in 2012 13. Jake Burger Holy Cross Good Scorer who came on strong last season. Good athlete who will put up good numbers this season 14. Chris Hayes....Explosive guard who should have an opportunity in Boohers system to make plays 15. Jake Flesch Conner.....Multi skilled guard who will need to produce for Conner to keep that preseason #1 ranking Just outside the top 15.... Cameron Haynes Scott....Great shooter who gives Scott 2nd best backcourt in the area behind Dixie Nick Gray SK......Needs carryover from good summer. Good shooter who plays hard all the time Nate McGovney...Campbell County...Well rounded player who will need to have a big year for Camels to overtake Scott in district Zeke Pike Dixie......Could be a top 15 player easily but has put an awful lot of focus into football and hard to argue with that D'Vontae Bradley Cooper....above average defender and very physical player. Not great skills but big time motor KeVon Rice...Holmes....Great ability but production needs to catch up to potential I don't know enough about Dontel Rice of Holmes to include as I didn't see him mich this summer and do not recall him from last years Holmes team. While this years group of seniors might not have the marquee D1 player of years past there is good depth and should produce some solid D2 players and a host of D3 players at the college level. Could still have a Montgomery or Hodges end up at the D1 level based on potential with their size and athletic ability. Doesn't make them better players at this point and time but there are certain things you just can't teach. Just trying to get thread back on track and sure I probably missed a few kids along the way!

Have they gotten a single commitment from an athlete outside of the state of Kentucky?

System allowed Boone to come within a missed layup of upsetting eventual state champion Holmes and making a trip to Rupp a couple of years ago. Has allowed Boone to win a lot of games over past couple of years. Travis is a top 10 player in Northern Kentucky but I would have a hard time saying he is top 5 based on production at this time. A also wouldn't have Tyler Hodges ranked 2nd for the very same reason. Production hasn't matched potential. Just my opinion but I think in the preseason lists you have players who have already produced Giesler, Smith, Thelen & Stauffer with players like Montgomery and Hodges with high potential but haven't put it together yet on the high school level. Good players succeed in whatever system their coach runs. At the college level coaches can recruit players to run their system. At the high school level players need to buy into the system and make it work for them. Thelen averaged 20 ppg last season with less than stellar guard play. Giesler is a no doubt top 5 player and he played with a shoot first point guard. Stauffer was successful with very average guard play. These players were very good with less than ideal circumstances.

That would be Scott HS on December 4 in Taylor Mill. Hopefully it will still be a good game for GRC!

Kellen was listed as a top 4 player in the region so I think he is getting a great deal of respect in a 10th region loaded with individual talent. Just getting mentioned with that group is pretty solid. The three players listed ahead of him are D1 caliber players. I think that Scott gets a ton of respect from the 10th Region for what they have been able to do since entering the 10th but there is still a pretty good gap between Scott and then GRC and Mason Co. Pretty good gap between GRC, Mason Co and the rest of the 10th Region.

Always good to see someone get an opportunity to get an education and get to continue their basketball career. Saginaw Valley State is a D2 school in Michigan. They play in the GLIAC which is an outstanding sports conference very similar to the GLVC for those who follow NKU. Findlay won D2 National Championship out of this conference a couple of years ago. SVSU finished 4th in the GLIAC last year. Program appears to be on the upswing since they hired Frankie Smith former assistant to Charlie Coles at Miami of Ohio. Is it going to be tough for a Scott Eagle to become an SVSU CARDINAL after all of those tough losses in 10th Region tourney to GRC Cardinals?
