Congrats to Coach Lickert and staff on quite a milestone at Covington Holmes. This is the first outright district title in a very very long time. They will be digging through the record books this week. The last time Holmes tied for a district crown was in 1978, when they finished the year at 6-4 and tied Boone County for the district title. They lost the tiebreak through the old Dickinson Ratings. You probably have to go back into the 1950's or 40's if not earlier to find when they last won a district outright. Impressive feat for the Dogs. As much as they have changed their fortunes on the field, they are still trying to change the culture around the program and it doesn't happen overnight. Best of luck going forward to the Dogs.

The Dawgs showed some grit, and played fairly well. I think they were inside Dixie's 20 yard line three or four times and came away empty. Peterson is going to be a real nice player, and he is only a freshman. It is going to take a real good 4A team to knock Holmes out of the playoffs.

Dogs off to a 5-0 start. Holmes returns to Tom Ellis Field next week for homecoming against Franklin County.

Didn't Guyn play on a really solid AAU team as opposed to Johnson? I think that exposure paid dividends for Guyn. I have not seen Guyn since last year's regionals, but he seems to be very offensively oriented. I think Johnson is physically a better player and can play both ends of the floor. It will be interesting to see how Johnson's recruitment plays out now.

I think Johnson is a more complete player. Johnson will be able to expand his game by playing the one this year for the Bulldogs.

Christian County was a fun team to watch last year in the Sweet 16. I think they return all of their starters or at least four of them. Chris Harrison's son is no longer at Trinity is he? If I recall correctly, Holmes will not have a starter under 6'3 in their lineup. That is rare these days in high school hoops in Kentucky, assuming that the Avery kid is eligible. The Phares injury did hurt Scott County.

GT, you think the verbal to UC sticks, or do you think him getting out of the city may cause him to re-think things?

Is he going give up his job as principal at the alternative school or assume some sort of teaching position at Highlands?

If Highlands were to wind up with Mike Flynn, they would have made an outstanding hire. Simply a gorgeous hire. One of the few coaches in the state that has taken three different schools in three different regions to the Sweet 16. He did a nice job at Holmes, maybe he didn't win a few region titles when many thought they should have, but you have to remember for most of the 80's, Holmes was not very good. He took Ashland to state, and Ashland has been dying a slow death over the years. It just isnt what it once was. Bourbon County was awful, but he got into administration. Great coach, great man...Highlands would be lucky to have such a coach.

Meinken is an old landfill. You dig deep enough you will find garbage. So it does settle. I have not been down there this year, but the dropoff was not pretty last year. They did put an irrigation system in this winter/spring. I would think that part of the problem is that the dirt on that side of the infield has gradually built up and has caused a "lip" where the dirt meets the grass. The parking lot is better...it used to be a practice site for the X Games skateboarding.

Eaves used to be a sportscaster at WKYT in Lexington. He now does a lot of work for FSN and Prime on the west coast.

Most everything is complete in regards to schedule from all that I hear. There may be a few changes, but this is what I have heard will be their non-conference games... Unbelievable. Recall sitting in front row at Freedom Hall that fateful March night in 1978. This exorcised those demons. First of Congrats to Central. Doug Bibby is a whale of a coach. How often do you see a box and 1, tri and two, 2-3 zone, half court trap, man to man in the state finals...and Central executed it. Brilliant game plan...kept Holmes off balance and used their bulk to their advantage. Congrats to Dave Henley and the staff....and players. Great effort. The switch to the 2-3 was brilliant.... You get to this stage, coaching does play a big role. You have to have some. Many can get by for while on talent and guile...but coaching does play a big role. Throw in some special players who executed and never panicked. Each one stepped up throughout the tournament. Congrats Dawgs, you deserve it. O Happy Day.:dancingpa
