Covington Catholic 9 Holmes 5

CovCath 9 Cov Holmes 5

With no disrespect directed to Holmes at all, this was the worst outing the starters at CovCath have had all this season. This is what happens when you think you can just roll over someone and are thinking about the games coming up. Adam Shumate deserved better from his "D". Oh well, another learning's experience and CovCath still won.

The Stats, the good, the bad and the ugly later.

Agree with TOG. Wins are earned there not automatic.

The good: The hitting of Nutini, Siemer and Lafever. Another runner trying to take home on a hit being thrown out at the plate as RF Martin threw a ball to Maile who with a catch and a sweep of his glove had the runner dead at the plate. IMHO opinion CovCath had a another runner dead at the plate as from my view the runner never touched the plate until after Maile placed the tag on him, but.....

The bad: The play of the infield, Adam Shumate deserved better today.

The ugly: The baseball field of Holmes/Holy Cross. My gosh the distance that the infield drops off behind third base, could be measured in feet not inches. The Ocean on a windy day is smoother than the outfield and a bunted ball down the third base line hopped and skipped right then left then right and then finally went foul. Not understand it wasn't a hit hit ball but a bunt. I have played, and watched games at this site for some 50 plus years and without a doubt I have never seen it in worse shape.

CovCath hitting:

Nutini 5 PA 2 runs scored 3 hits double 1 rbi and 1 walk

Darner 5 PA 2 runs scored and 3 hits double

Isler 4 PA 2 hits double and 2 rbi's

Lafever 4 PA 1 run scored 1 hit 2rbi's 2 sf's 1 sb and reached base via E-6

Holocher 4 PA 1 k and 1 sac

Stayton 4 PA 1 hit double and 1 walk

Ritter 1 run scored

Warning 1 run scored

Martin 4 PA 1 sac

CovCath pitching:

Should be a great weekend of baseball with some outstanding weather forecasted.

Note I do not own a laptop so unless the hotel I am staying at has one that I can use, there will no posting from me until sometime late Saturday.

A win is a win even if it's ugly. 14 hits by the Colonels is not to shabby either. I would agree also on your comments on the feild conditions. I believe if you stand behind home plate and look down the left feild you will see the let feilder from the knees up!!

I thought them guys were midgets out in left field. What a mess that field is.

OG, I agree with you on Meinken condition. I have never seen it as bad, even when I played for Holmes back in early 70's when there were three fields. Last month a sprinkler system was installed all over the field, that may have added to to rut problem. I drove by it today about 1:30-2pm and saw a guy on tractor dragging the infield but never saw him cut the grass and it looked like it needed a haircut. It is a shame that city of covington doesn't do a better job maintaining that field. I think I'll mention this to my Covington commisioner buddy, Steve Megerle.

Are they ever going to finish the construction at Meinken? That's been going on forever, and it makes it a mess if there are a lot of fans trying to watch the game.

Good to see Stayton in the DH spot.

Good to see Stayton in the DH spot.

Better yet, it's great to have a Right hand bat in Eggemeier and a Left hand bat in Stayton in that DH spot that can hit. Both have done a very good job so far this season.

Almost arrogant; very close to the truth. Old Guy knows all, sees all, and IMO knows NKY baseball as wellas anybody.

I failed to mention that Luke Maile has broken the career record for hits by a CovCath baseball player and he has also broken the career record for doubles.

Congrats Luke.....:dancingpa:dancingpa:dancingpa

Thank you for the kind words....

Cooper played on this field Wednesday and we were making the same comments. While taking infield a ball was hit to second baseman and the last hop in the grass before it hit dirt, the ball went directly left about ten feet. I feel for the kids of Holmes who have to play on this field.

Luke is good but thats almost 8 hits a game playing 30 games a year since you were in 8th grade. Even Pete would be impressed.:scared:
