Don't let the law get in the way of your passion. Whether you like it or not, in this situation or not, the Principal is in charge of that building and all aspects. Period. Schools that don't have the Principal clearly in charge have a problem.

In a public school, it is always the Principal's choice. Although at some schools, the AD, etc. do some screening and recommending.

It's as though you feel a consolation bracket is a good thing. You call it consolation. I call it a loser's bracket. The State tournament is about winning, not being Mr. Congeniality or about being 7th best. These two events are wonderful, but they serve different purposes. The 5th 3rd (and others) are All-star tournaments. Hand pick the best you want to bring together. The state championship is, was, and always shall be, a "representative" championship, where each part of the state is to be represented, and all are not competitively equal. So they necessarily will be different. I happen to attend both, and hope you all will as well. They both have a great purpose and achieve their goals.

Keep in mind there is more than one sport in high school. Northern Kentucky is very very short of good track facilities (particularly 8 lane facilities). Conner, Ryle and Scott are about it for qualify facilities and all three don't have 8 lanes. So for them to put in a full track gives that part of the tri-county a badly needed facillity even if fans do have to sit another 6 feet from the football field. THe big question is not track. But whether or not they will try to put a full size soccer inside the track. That makes a big difference as it widens the track in the end zones and makes the fans sit a bit further back (i.e. Dunbar and Tates Creek)

Depends on how you look at it. Beechwood's track causes problems if you are trying to run laps......

One other thing. And this isn't a knock on Burke, just an observation. The reason Tim Couch is probably sitting on the couch today and hasn't had that second shot is that in college, he was protected by his "system". Or at least that's what the NFL scouts said. They wondered about how much he really had to do vs. the ability to succeed with that offense as long as he had good receivers. I think the same thing could be said of Burke as Coach S's system worked very well to hide the flaws of a QB. At the same time, its hard to argue those TD vs. interception numbers. Even with the system perfect, you have to know when to throw it AND when not to.

Be careful, just because Bush is a back now, don't forget his exploits at QB at Male. He belongs in this list without a doubt. Just my opinion, on the above list, I would switch Redmon and J-Lo to tier one and move Burke to tier two.

Which says as much as anything that has been said thus far, that the current four class system with pure geographic playoffs has allowed the rich (not $, but success) to stay rich or stay richer, while the poor stay poor. Until something changes, these schools will remain on the list which explains why some of them are the loudest opponents of five or six classes. Great list and great research!!

How can anyone make a positive evaluation of 4, 5 or 6 without seeing what they look like? Travel, etc. Who it helps, Who it hurts, etc. Otherwise, you are making a subjective decision based solely on a number which is about the most indefensible and arbitrary thing you can do leading to the conclusion that the biggest resistance is a resistance to change..

It would seem to me that regardless of systems, a school with 2200 kids has no complaint about anything in a one-class system. Not one valid complaint at all.

Do you realize what you are saying? Monday night, all 274 boys basketball teams, regardless of record (they could be 0-24), start over in postseason play. With 6 classes, almost all of the 224 football teams would start over with the first round of playoffs. In May, all 275 teams playing high school basketball, even if they are 0-30, will start off with the district playoffs. Please explain the difference. Baseball and Basketball don't cut to fewer teams because of geography do they? Yes, those first round playoff games could see some lopsided games. But won't you see that next week too? Just because it's not the way it's been done, does that make it bad? Just curious for all of those who think "the geography' or "number of schools" somehow means we should have smaller playoffs in football than in any other sport.

The All A IS an invitational. Russellville and others, opted not to enter the regionals years ago. It is their choice. Now the State event is not an invitational, but the region is. Frankly, Touchstone doesn't manage it, a former AD in Northern Kentucky does. And he doesn't want to change the numbers. Historically, 425 was the cutoff for Class A football the year the All A basketball started, that's why they used the number. Then the KHSAA went to 9-12 numbers and the Class A never changed, they stayed with 425 for grades 9-12. Seems to me like you could simply say that the top boundary for A is the highest enrollment of a Class A football school and let it go at that. But that probably makes way too much sense. btw, boycotts don't work and only penalize kids while adults take their ball and go home. Just ask the Lexington public schools (or the W KY schools in the mid 1990s).

My guess is that there are about 162 schools in Class A, AA and AAA that do not consider any game the marquee game that isn't in their class, and dang sure don't consider the AAAA game to be the marquee. That statement shows a bias that the KHSAA (thankfully) has kept out of the mix. And as far as prep, as long as it is the same for both teams, there is not an equity issue.

The coaches complain enough about three days and the pitching rule. Why make it four?

Your problem is that the refs you see in the regular season do not call the matches the way the rules are written. They just babysit the kids and then its over. At the state, the calls are made closer to the book than at any other time, and the kids aren't used to that. I would be careful, one half of a season doesn't give you much credibility to be evaluating the officials. Frankly, from the match I saw, I would concentrate more on the deportment of my team. As for the call near the line, that is correct. The ref is to hold the points until there is clearly no movement toward a takedown and then award them. Clearly this weekend, the schools that choose to use "hometown" boys to officiate their matches were at a distinct disadvantage when they got officials who 1) knew the rules, 2) had been there before, and 3) didn't give a dang what the coaches thought.

From media reports- Kentucky has its first female qualifier in the state Wrestling Tournament. Senior Priscilla Brownfield of Campbell County finished 3rd in the region to qualify for Frankfort.

Oh well, we may just have to disagree on this one. As someone who sat in on some of those meetings in the 1980s, I can tell you that "easy" takes on two or more possible meanings. Easy in this case, is not the avoiding of hard decisions, in my personal opinion, but rather, taking the path that pleases the most people in the shortest amount of time. I think that Board has 18 people now, so their thinking might not be the same, but certainly back then, and even in what I read on BGP last year about basketball alignment, if they can please a majority by making what you term an "easy" decision, they likely will.

Not to muddy the waters, but why would you double the enrollment if you base your classification on total boys which is one of the other things the coaches discussed? A boy is a boy and doesn't need to be doubled. I admire the perseverance of my man leatherneck. I too come from days when there were even sub districts and you didn't even make the district playoffs if you couldn't get out of your subdistricts. But what some who object to equally dividing don't remember (like my man Coachj) is the hell the Board used to take when the numbers were not even. To say there were accusations of gerrymandering the numbers to please one or two board members would be today's understatement (ask Coach Matney some time). But the decision to have four equal divisions took away that part of the alleged political aspect of the Board's involvement. Is it perfect? No. But at the same time, it represents a far better situation today than yesteryear. As for proportional-division classes, etc., let's go one step further. If you haven't had a good quarterback in a few years, you get x number of boys deducted from our enrollment. If you haven't had an all-stater, you get y number of kids deducted from your enrollment. If you have only made the first round, and not advanced, let's deduct more students. Then after we have figured out all the deductions, classify based on that number. Yep, dumbing it down sure is the way to go. (that last little bit is tongue and cheek aimed at a couple of posters). Simply put, and having watched realignments since 1983 or so, there is no way to please everyone, and about the best you can hope for is one over half.

Unfortunately, you have used the wrong word. How does "fair" have anything to do with where schools are built. Unfortunately, when you aligned based on geography, you align based on geography, and for lots of reasons including travel costs, rivalries, etc. In all honesty, I don't think there is a school in that district that will get the first ounce of sympathy as to "fair", etc given the number of kids that they have to draw from within the county.
