Is anyone else having problems with this. Apparently the major state tests are taking place next week, and Owsley County's Superintendant is making all of the sporting events cancel all of their games. Anyone else having this problem, or is it just an Owsley Co issue?

I believe our coaches are given some direction to stay away from scheduling during that time.

Yes and no. At my school, we are to not schedule road trips and be very careful on who we schedule during finals week.

Pikeville will be playing during testing. This issue is a joke the importance of that testing is to get the teachers bonuses and nothing more. What do the children get out of it other than test exemptions from their regular studies if they do well. The whole process isnt for the kids. If the kids were thought of we would take the alternative test which is similar to the ACT test. Now they could convince me that was for the kids.

So far off base here it is not funny. There are no bonuses for teachers for CATS scores. At least if there is, I am still waiting for my check in the mail.

 

Now if you want to argue it is a test for politicians, I won't argue with you on that one.

Our principal just told us not to go on a long trip. Also, we don't play any JV. As for prom, we have a early game on prom night.

You think it is bad with baseball, coach fastpitch and schedule against the girls hair appointments during the day.

Teacher's get no bonuses. And it's not the teachers that advocate the testing.

Wolfe County has three games scheduled next week and I'll not be surprised if at LEAST one of them is cancelled because of the tests. I don't mean to minimize the importance of the tests, but would like to understand the reasoning behind cancelling school events because of the tests. Are the tests so hard that the students will be too tired to do anything after school,or do school officials think the students are going to go home and study until bedtime for the tests the next day???

 

I think baseball games would be a welcome break from all day testing for the students, but I guess that is only my opinion. I could understand not going on long road trips during testing week, but cancelling games and other events make no sense to me.

Kids can't enjoy Spring Break for the "good" of the team, but Admin can deny the kids games over a testing period that NEVER overlaps a game. Interesting...

I understand where you are coming from, but the fact that basketball and football's regular seasons last 3 months, compared to baseball's season only lasting 7 weeks, I'd say that we should have the tests then and cancel all games during that week; those sports can afford to lose one week during the regular season more than baseball can!

Doing well in CATS testing does provide financial rewards to the school systems though I believe. None of it may directly to the teachers, but it is one of the determining factors for additional funding. I also believe schools can lose funding by doing poorly.
