Anyone know what year this happened??? Hate showing my age here, but I can remember when the districts and regions in kentucky high school baseball were not the same as basketball, as they are today. Also, I can remember (mid-to late 70's) when the district runner-up did NOT advance to the Regional Tournament in baseball. When did this change?

Tonight makes a week exactly since Wolfe County played. In the meantime, we rained out last Friday, Double header Monday, Tue. Wed. and today. Had road game scheduled today,and tried to switch to home, where we could have played, but just couldn't make it happen on short notice. Tomorow is not looking good at all either. Got Sheldon Clark scheduled, but their coach has already said his field would not be playable and wants to come to Wolfe County. At this time, the field is messy but playable, but any amount of rain at all will change that. Would just love to get some games in, before the Districts start!

Don't think they had one. If your giving away a MVP or Most Outstanding Player Award for this tournament, Deron Terrill wins hand down. He was incredible in the second half against Breathitt. Hit many tough shots, including the game winner with 3 seconds left. If there is a better ball handler in traffic, I'd like to see him. A great passer, as well. When you start your list of top players in the 14th Region next year, you gotta put this young man in there, somewhere. Dillion Hayes had an outstanding game as well, scoring 21 for the Wolves. Brandon Campbell played excellent defense, handled the ball well against Breathitt's press all night, and scored 8 points as well. Don't forget Salyer Denniston's 10 off the bench for the Wolves. He's only a freshman, and is going to be a great one for Wolfe County. Probably the most athletic player on the team right now. Don't forget the Hollon kid, who is the only Wolfe with any heigth at all. He played hard, blocked a couple of shots, got some big rebounds, and basically came up big against Breathitt. And, 8th grader Dillion Creech played very well for Wolfe County. All in all, a very good effort by the Wolves.

My thoughts, exactly! When this format begins, I look for a couple of things to happen. 1. You probably won't see nearly as many first round Regional Tournament upsets, as you may not see nearly as many coaches "saving" their number one for later and risking getting upset by a weaker team that happens to have one good pitcher. They can afford to use their best in the opening round, and still have him elgible for later. 2. Teams that have an absolute "stud", as their number one will use him through-out the Regional Tournament. Still, I kinda like this format. It should prove to be interesting, and exciting for the 16 Region winners that get to play at Applebee's.

The idea has been kicked around for the past few years, and it looks like it's finally coming. Baseball tournament will get new look in 2010 Posted by Mike Fields on January 21, 2009 For the past several years, eight semi-state winners have come to Applebee’s Park in Lexington for the last three rounds of the state tournament, and that’s the way it will be again this June. But starting in 2010, the tournament will be restructured. The semi-state round will be eliminated, and the 16 region winners will advance to Applebee’s Park for a full week of competition to determine the state baseball champion. Julian Tackett of the KHSAA unveiled the plan at the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association convention in Louisville last weekend. In 2010, regional tournaments will start on Memorial Day, with semifinals three days later, and the finals the following Tuesday. That would give the regions plenty of time to be completed in case of bad weather. The 16-team state tournament would have four first-round games on Monday and Tuesday, followed by the quarterfinals on Wednesday and Thursday, the semifinals on Friday and the finals on Saturday. Pitching rules, which limit the innings a pitcher can work, would be the same for all teams in the first and second rounds regardless of what days they play, so no teams would have a pitching advantage. Alan Stein, president and CEO of the Lexington Legends whose home is Applebee’s Park, has been a booster of the 16-team format for years. “I’ve always thought it made a lot of sense, a no-brainer,” he said. “It allows a lot more kids to experience the state tournament; it means more motel rooms being filled in Lexington; the KHSAA makes more money; it’s beneficial to our company, and long-term, it’s good for baseball in the state of Kentucky.” Stein said the Legends are willing to surrender a week of prime dates in June to host the high school event, and will work with the KHSAA on the best format, taking into account possible rainouts. “We love the event, and we think it’s great for baseball overall,” Stein said. “We’ll be as flexible as we can be because we want it to happen.” Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Listened to some of the game on the radio. Wolfe led by 12 at the half, and trailed by as many as 6 in the fourth quarter before coming back. Brandon Campbell had another huge performance in the fourth period, and wound up with 23 points, according to the radio, followed by Dylan Hayes with 22. One thing Wolfe has to improve on is their free-throw shooting; they go to the line a lot, so they are throwing away a lot of easy points, and of course, free throw shooting late in the game usually is very important.

At this point, probably not, but he could develop into an outstanding baseball player. He had a solid season as a Freshman, but played hurt last year. He finally had to shut it down with a month remaining in the baseball season. Had a couple of surgeries in the off-season, and frankly, is fortunate to be playing basketball from the get-go. The doctors initially thought it would be later in the season before he got to play, if at all. As far as his abilities as a baseball player, (I know this is a basketball thread), He could be one of the best defensive outfielders in eastern Kentucky if he wants to be. He has great range, reads the ball well,has a good glove, and a very good arm. The main problem is that he doesnt like the outfield very well. I saw him make a couple of defensive plays in the outfield last year that were simply spectactular. I mentioned that he has a good arm, and one thing Wolfe County needs is pitching. If he can figure out were the strike zone is, he can help them greatly in this area.

Deron is an excellent player, and a good kid. I enjoy watching him play. He is off to a great start this year, especially coming off a serious injury last year. He is a very clever player, and has a knack of "being where the ball is". In the past, he has been his own worst enemy, often-times "butting heads" with coach Creech. This year, that does not seem to be a problem, so far! He is very gifted, has speed, smarts, and shoots the ball well. Looking forward to having him healthy on the baseball field this spring, as well!!!!!!!

I was unable to attend tonight, but was able to catch some of it on the radio. The game was close all night, not sure if either team ever had over a 6 or 8 point lead. Brandon Campbell hit 7 of 8 free throws in the final minute, including a pair with only a couple of seconds remaining to secure the win. Dylan Hayes and Deron Terrill each had 22 points. Freshman Tyler Hayes came off the bench to add 10, and Campbell, who didn't score until the fourth quarter, added 9.

Agreed. Should be a lot of points put up on the scoreboard. Funny thing tonight, Wolfe didnt shoot the ball very well, and missed a lot of free throws, but still scored 99, which meant the pace of the game provided a lot of possessions for both teams. If Wolfe hit their free throws, and shot the ball from the field like they usually do, especially from the three point line, they may well have scored 125 tonight, no kidding.

Wolfe wins, 99-88, coming back from 19 down midway through the third quarter. The Wolves' quickness overcame the Pirates huge size advantage. I don't have any stats, but Brandon Campbell, Dylan Hayes, and Deron Terrill all probably scored more than 20 points apiece. I thought all three played well, with Campbell running the floor like a deer, Hayes hitting some big shots down the stretch depite having four fouls most of the second half, and Terrill was all over the place, making big plays, including banking in a half court shot at the end of the third quarter. I also thought the Lutes kid played an outstanding game for Wolfe County. All-in-all, a pretty good start for the Wolves.

The game went back and forth and could have gone either way. Wolfe left 8 or 9 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the 6th inning. The big play was probably in the second inning with two on and Wolfe's Zach Sallie hit a hard shot that Jackson's third basman Dustin Flinchum snared and turned it into an inning-ending double play. It cost Wolfe one run, and the middle of the lineup would have been hitting with runners on base. The game ending play was a result of a failed squeeze attempt. All-in-all, it was a well-played game by both teams.

It was certainly a pitcher's duel. Boggs pitched for Jackson City, and Ritchie went for Breathitt. JC scored early and Breathitt had a couple of chances, but left too many on base. The second baseman for Jackson City, Drew Davidson made two amazing defensive plays, one a diving catch on a pop-up in foul territory. He nearly landed in the fence when he caught the ball. He made another diving catch over his shoulder in right field with runners on base. He cost Breathitt at least one run on the play and may have been the difference in Jackson winning the game.

Wolfe County's defense, was simply terrible. (Trying to be kind here, but the truth is what it is). The outfield made errors on three fly balls, (a fourth should have been caught, but dropped in), runs scored on all of these plays. The infield blew TWO run-downs between third and home, allowing runs to score again. You can't win many games giving multiple runs away. The bad thing is that the Wolfe defense has probably been their stronger suit this year, but against Jackson City twice within a week, that certainly has not been the case. Drake was not terrible tonight, but this was probably his worst outing of the season. His control was way off, as he walked four and hit two. Most of these give-a-ways managed to score, I'm sure. Jackson City started hitting him pretty hard in the sixth and seventh innings. I'm not so much sure that he got tired as I think the Tigers simply got too many looks at him. I am sure the top of the order batted five times against him. The Wolves do have a couple of their best players out, one for the season, and had several players out of postion on defense, but that does not entirely explain their sudden lapse of defense in the past week. If they want to make a run in the post-season, they have to get a LOT better.

In the 14th Region, as well as others, I'm sure, teams that don't draw a bye AND get a tough first round game can really use their pitching up in a hurry. You have to win four games in either four or five days, which is really a harder row to hoe than either the Regional or State Tournanments. Added to the fact that these are small schools with a smaller talent poll to begin with, it becomes very difficult. I am for any changes that would improve the All-A. A couple of things I would like to see is the entire thing be played statewide at the same time. Also, I would like to see better informantion given about the details of the tournament given well in advance of the event. The draw, and information about the All-A basketball is known many months before the event. In baseball, not much is known about who plays who and where, until after the schedules have been made, usually. The 14th Region in years past, always held there All-A tournament the first week of the season. Wolfe county did not schedule anything that week, based on past history. A few weeks before the season started, it was announced that the tournament would be played on the week of April 14th. They had to cancel everthing they had originally scheduled that week, and had a very hard time finding anyone to schedule on the first week of the season. Probably cost them the chance to play four or five more games, at least. A little better advance info would have helped a whole lot.

My sentiments exactly, but I'm afraid that is exactly what happened.

I have no trouble what-so-ever with an umpire accidently calling a dropped foul tip strike three, then IMMEDIATALY changing his call when he realized he made a mistake. To not make the immediate change on his call, then call the batter out on a tag, THEN change the strike to a foul AFTER THE ENTIRE TEAM RAN OFF THE FIELD is just ludicrous.

I think you make an excellent point here. Everything I posted earlier was as accurate as I saw. Everything I reported, I also asked others who either participated or witnessed the game to substantiate what I have said. The next thing I am going to say is something I did not personally witness, but one Wolfe County coach and one fan collaborate on the same story: Both told me that after the third out was called and the Wolfe County players were running off the field, the Breathitt County first base coach ran to the home plate umpire, arguing the ball was foul tipped. Coach Napier then came out of the Breathitt dugout to argue, and somehow, the call was changed. I did not personally see this happening, as I was watching the Wolfe County players huddle on the first base line. If this were true, then it is surely a shame. At the home plate meeting before EVERY game, the umps remind coaches that ball/strikes and out/safe calls are not to be argued with, nor will they be reversed. If this were the case, then the Breathitt County coaching staff certainly did help reverse a call.

You are missing my point. The game has been "let go" for more than 10 days. The Wolfe County players understand that "getting hosed" is completely out of their hands, and they have rebounded very well, and are playing pretty good baseball right now. Just passing information on, and was wanting to hear other posters comments, and maybe past experiences. BTW, one more point. In NO way am I suggesting that this horrible call(and even worse, the way it was handled), cost Wolfe County the game. They led 5-2 late, and could not close the deal. Give the Breathitt County players all the credit in the world. They did not give up, and did what they had to do in order to win, especially the Bobcat player who benefitted from the bad call and given the extra strike. He did what he had to do, and took advantage of it. My hat is off to him. What I will say, is that this horrible call was a CONTRIBUTING FACTOR in the outcome of the game.
