The Tigers fought off the Wolves in this opening round game. Hayes pitched for Jackson and Drake pitched for Wolfe, the same matchup as the game last month. Both pitched well, I thought. Hayes had a bunch of strikeouts and maybe one walk, but he gave up a lot of big hits in the 2nd inning before he got back on track. Drake didn't give up a lot of big hits but Jackson put the ball in play a lot and took care of their baserunners.

 

The last play of the game involved the catcher Boggs gunning down a Wolfe runner at third, and the Jackson tagger and Wolfe taggee were close childhood friends.

 

Jackson City moves on to face favored Breathitt again in the 55th championship Friday night. Last year's game was a last inning thriller with Jackson upsetting the Bobcats.

The game went back and forth and could have gone either way. Wolfe left 8 or 9 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the 6th inning.

 

The big play was probably in the second inning with two on and Wolfe's Zach Sallie hit a hard shot that Jackson's third basman Dustin Flinchum snared and turned it into an inning-ending double play. It cost Wolfe one run, and the middle of the lineup would have been hitting with runners on base.

 

 

The game ending play was a result of a failed squeeze attempt.

 

 

All-in-all, it was a well-played game by both teams.
