Drake started for Wolfe and Boggs started for Jackson. Both gave up a couple runs in the first innings. Gentry Hayes came in for Jackson in the 3rd and finished the game out. Wolfe's pitcher got a little tired and Jackson started spraying hits in the later innings. Corey Davidson had a couple shoestring catches in centerfield again.

 

Breathitt and Jackson City should have the 1-2 spots in the district wrapped up now.

Wolfe County's defense, was simply terrible. (Trying to be kind here, but the truth is what it is). The outfield made errors on three fly balls, (a fourth should have been caught, but dropped in), runs scored on all of these plays. The infield blew TWO run-downs between third and home, allowing runs to score again. You can't win many games giving multiple runs away. The bad thing is that the Wolfe defense has probably been their stronger suit this year, but against Jackson City twice within a week, that certainly has not been the case.

 

 

Drake was not terrible tonight, but this was probably his worst outing of the season. His control was way off, as he walked four and hit two. Most of these give-a-ways managed to score, I'm sure. Jackson City started hitting him pretty hard in the sixth and seventh innings. I'm not so much sure that he got tired as I think the Tigers simply got too many looks at him. I am sure the top of the order batted five times against him.

 

 

The Wolves do have a couple of their best players out, one for the season, and had several players out of postion on defense, but that does not entirely explain their sudden lapse of defense in the past week. If they want to make a run in the post-season, they have to get a LOT better.
