This was a dandy. Hazard scored one run in each of the first three innings and then Jackson roared back with some big hits in the top of the 4th to tie it up. Hazard scored a run in the 4th to take the lead. Both teams were scoreless in the last innings.

 

Jackson pitched Boggs, an 8th grader, who handled himself very well, getting several K's. Hazard pitched Combs in the first 5 innings. The reliever came in for him with considerably more speed. Jackson had runners on in the top of the 7th and the pitcher snow-coned a line drive and then threw to first for the double, ending the game.

 

This was an exciting game only slightly marred by some rude comments and chants from the dugout.

 

In my opinion, the All A format needs some improvement. Organized supposedly for the little schools, it actually penalizes those schools with small pitching rosters by playing so many games in the same week that a small school uses up all its pitchers before their 3 day rest is up. Spreading it out over a longer timeframe would allow a small team to come back with some pitching before the tournament is over.

It was an excellent game, well-played by both teams. There was a LOT of baseball showing from the tip to the pitcher's glove on the game-ending double play. If the ball were hit a little higher, the ball goes into centerfield, the game is tied, and the go-a-head run in scoring position. Just another example that the old saying "baseball is a game of inches" is so very true.

 

Boggs pitched a whale of a game for Jackson City. I presume he is their number three starter. Are one and two that much better? If so, the Tigers have a very solid pitching staff.

In the 14th Region, as well as others, I'm sure, teams that don't draw a bye AND get a tough first round game can really use their pitching up in a hurry. You have to win four games in either four or five days, which is really a harder row to hoe than either the Regional or State Tournanments. Added to the fact that these are small schools with a smaller talent poll to begin with, it becomes very difficult.

 

I am for any changes that would improve the All-A. A couple of things I would like to see is the entire thing be played statewide at the same time. Also, I would like to see better informantion given about the details of the tournament given well in advance of the event. The draw, and information about the All-A basketball is known many months before the event. In baseball, not much is known about who plays who and where, until after the schedules have been made, usually. The 14th Region in years past, always held there All-A tournament the first week of the season. Wolfe county did not schedule anything that week, based on past history. A few weeks before the season started, it was announced that the tournament would be played on the week of April 14th. They had to cancel everthing they had originally scheduled that week, and had a very hard time finding anyone to schedule on the first week of the season. Probably cost them the chance to play four or five more games, at least. A little better advance info would have helped a whole lot.

This was a pretty good game on both sides. They both made their plays and had timely hits. All in all impressive game on both sides. Jackson City came to the game with the intention of winning and almost pulled it off. Great effort by the Tigers. Hazard survived in this one. Never really got the hits they needed. Good win for the Dawgs. The pitcher for Jackson City done a great job. Never got rattled and held his own. Hazard's starter done the same, maybe got a little tired. The relief pitcher that came in is probably Hazard's #2. Threw much harder and Jackson had a hard time catching up to the FB. Much better game to sit through than the first game of the night.
