Aligning Baseball Regions and Districts with Basketball Regions and Districts

Featured Replies

Anyone know what year this happened??? Hate showing my age here, but I can remember when the districts and regions in kentucky high school baseball were not the same as basketball, as they are today.

Also, I can remember (mid-to late 70's) when the district runner-up did NOT advance to the Regional Tournament in baseball. When did this change?

The major realignment was after the 1984-85 school year. That was the first time, at least in western Kentucky, that the basketball and baseball regions were assigned the same boundaries.

I remember those one and done District days (mid to late 60's). We lost to Leo Foster as he threw a 1 hitter and hit a triple to beat us in my senior year. At the time it hurt, but later when I was watching Leo play SS for the Braves at Riverfront Stadium playing against the Reds, I was proud to say, hey I threw that guy out trying to steal on me one time.

I also seem to remember the Regions being larger maybe like only 8 regions at the time!

Does anybody have a copy of the old districts, pre-1985? It would be interesting to see how things have changed.

To the best of memory, this is far western Kentucky baseball in 1985:

REGION 1

1 ... Carlisle County, Fulton City, Fulton County, Hickman County

2 ... Ballard Memorial, Heath, Lone Oak, Paducah Tilghman, Reidland, St. Mary

3 ... Fancy Farm, Farmington, Lowes, Mayfield, Sedalia, Symsonia, Wingo

REGION 2

4 ... Calloway County, Marshall County, Murray

5 ... Christian County, Fort Campbell, Hopkinsville, Trigg County

6 ... Caldwell County, Crittenden County, Livingston Central, Lyon County

If memory serves, Region 3 included Madisonville, Henderson County and the seven Muhlenberg County schools, and Region 4 was the Owensboro area.

I think there were just eight baseball regions in the 1960s and early 1970s. I think the state went to 16 regions somewhere around 1973 or 1974.

In the late 80's the regional winners played in a 4 team semi-state tournament. The winners of the semi-state tournaments played in what was called the Final 4. So the state tournament was a 4 team single elimanation tournament.
