I believe the only additional funding is for schools that score low on their tests, so they may raise their scores. All the bonus incentives for teachers and schools disappeared a few years ago.

The principal over-reacted by canceling ball games.

You think it is bad with baseball, coach fastpitch and schedule against the girls hair appointments during the day.

NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND AND KERA are the worst things ever to happen to education. Most of school time is spent teaching to a test. As far as cancelling games it would not happen in football or basketball.

So far off base here it is not funny. There are no bonuses for teachers for CATS scores. At least if there is, I am still waiting for my check in the mail.

As a former varsity coach, I do understand your concern, but even though I was a "hard nosed" athlete, but I am first and foremost a teacher. Athletics are wonderful, but academics must come first!!!! Last week our softball team didn't get back to school until 11:30pm. Would this cause the students to be tired? I would think so. It did when I coached. I believe this is the reason that the Superintendent made this decision several years ago. I dont' see why this is such a problem, this is spring and with spring comes rain, so you could have be rained out anyway.

The school is still allowing other after school activities during this week. I'm not too happy about it. They knew these tests were scheduled for this week a LONG time ago. Now we have to call other teams to break the news to them that we can't play. Try to reschedule a game in mid season (not an easy task). Anyway Buckman44SS said it the best...can you imagine it being scheduled in basketball or football season. THEY WOULD STILL PLAY!! It is a sad day for the baseball players!

Yes and no. At my school, we are to not schedule road trips and be very careful on who we schedule during finals week.

That's how it has been at Owsley County in the past.....permission to go ahead and play the games as long as they were home games (with no double headers or JV games), or were within a 30 minute drive of the school. That was reasonable to me. All the kids were in early enough to not cause a problem for the testing (we all know that they're going to get to bed by 9 anyway:rolleyes: ...they're probably more tired from "practicing" test taking than they would be from playing ball games).

When did they decide to make this big of a change, which I feel is pretty drastic. It's not fair to the baseball/softball players to completely lock them out of competition for an entire week.

We had to cancel two HOME games on Monday (today) and Tuesday. One of those games is a district game. I am not going reschedule either of the games, as far as I'm concerned the Superintendant can handle it. All they did is take two games away from the Senior baseball players!

At Newport all games are still on as scheduled and we begin testing tomorrow through friday

I agree. It makes no sense to me to cancel home games, and I also don't think it should be a problem to play anyone from a neighboring county if it's a single game. All the students would be back home much earlier than usual, and it wouldn't interrupt the routine of the athlete's daily patterns, which would probably be more detrimental to their test scores than simply allowing them to play their games.

I wonder what time the kids will be in bed tonight after the 4H banquet that lasts till 8:30pm. I believe I could get an entire baseball game in by 8pm if I start at 5pm. I don't get it, but people must be concerned about it because this thread is getting a lot of attention. I'm just glad that this is still America, and that I can say what I feel. Oh, and the umpires showed up yesterday, and I'm sure they will want to be paid.

It doesn't mean anything if I don't agree with the school board on this decision. I'm sure a lot of people don't agree with a lot of decisions the school board makes. Don't take it personal, I am not attacking anyone, I just don't agree with the decision. And for the people who know me, they know I will let you know if I don't agree with something. (as should everyone)
