Ref's in our state!

Featured Replies

I would like to start off by saying that I think that there were some calls today they was just terrible this weeknd. I think a lot has to do with the low standards they have for being a ref. Open book test no time limit. That is a joke. You only have to attend one rule clinic a year. Some things I saw this weeknd Inconsistent stalling calls. by this I mean one time there will be a quick stalling call and then it will become no existent. Any body got anything to add?

THis is what I posted in the Boys Basketball thread on the ppor officiating.

The Referees in the state of KY try their hardest to call a consistent and fair game. That is what coaches ask for and what the referees try and do.

Too many fans love to criticize these hard working men and women without an OUNCE of understanding of the job they are trying to do.

They get verbally abused by parents and fans. Things are yelled at them by parents who would ground their children for MONTHS if the same things the parent was saying were ever repeated to them by their children.

I thank the refs for doing this job, being away from their families night after night, so that we can have our kids playing a basketball game.

For those that want to criticize, PLEASE, PLEASE get off your high horse and get your stripes and contribute to the process instead of wanting to stand outside of it and rip those involved.

Im not criticizeing any refs, i know they work hard to get the job done and without them sports wouldnt be possible. However, Ky wrestling officals are just horrible from what ive seen. Dont get me wrong there are many out there who do a great job, but there seems to be more who doesnt do such a great job.

I saw a few calls this week which wher just mind blowing to me, i know for a fact i saw at least 4 matches which were decided by the offical. This should never happen in my opinion. Once a wrestler shot a single had the leg on the line, the defensive wrestler locked his hands through the legs, and they stayed int he same place for 30 seconds. An obvious stalemate, and not to mention the score was tied. No change in position was made for 30 seconds, then as the buzzer sounded the ref turns and gives the shooter a takedown. How could he not call this earlier if no position changed? This would of given the wrestler time ot belly out and possibly get a reversal. Instead they stay in the same position and one wrestler loses the match.

I then saw a referee call locking hands from the neutral position, in all my years ive never seen that.

One thing that upset me the most about the week, was the ref who wouldnt move to position and watch back points, he simply walkd around the wrestlers abd counted by his hip. not one time would he go to the mat to count backs he just stood and counted beside them, to me this is unacceptable.

I agree with the OP about stalling, very inconsistent. There was another situation to where wrestlers where on there feet in OT and a ref called stalling and awarded the match to the other wrestler, when both wrestlers where just in a ear to ear tie up.

BTW, none of these matches were any of my kids, so im in no way complaining because of that, i honestly had no complaints with any of the matches we had.

I'd say 80% horrible 15% are all-right and the other 5% need to try something else thier so bad.

One thing that would help our refs is involvement with USA wrestling. To be qualified as a ref, you must take a 6 hour course and be involved in refereeing as part of a 3 ref team. There are 3 officials per match - one on the mat, one at the table, and one across the mat. All call the match and can be overruled by the others. Additionally, emphasis is placed upon mat position. You are taught to anticipate and get to the place where the judgement must be made. This team approach takes the burden off a particular individual and allows for discussion afterwards to review calls and compare the reasons for awarding points. When you are overruled, you get another refs perspective. The result is more consistency in calls.

Your problem is that the refs you see in the regular season do not call the matches the way the rules are written. They just babysit the kids and then its over. At the state, the calls are made closer to the book than at any other time, and the kids aren't used to that. I would be careful, one half of a season doesn't give you much credibility to be evaluating the officials. Frankly, from the match I saw, I would concentrate more on the deportment of my team.

As for the call near the line, that is correct. The ref is to hold the points until there is clearly no movement toward a takedown and then award them. Clearly this weekend, the schools that choose to use "hometown" boys to officiate their matches were at a distinct disadvantage when they got officials who 1) knew the rules, 2) had been there before, and 3) didn't give a dang what the coaches thought.

I'd say 80% horrible 15% are all-right and the other 5% need to try something else thier so bad.

You are more than welcome to join them.

I am sure with only 80 statewide, and 30 of them being coaches who license so they can do their JV matches, you would gladly get all of the work you can handle.
