I spoke with both Coach Roark and Coach Mills tonight. Both of them said they saw the e-mail that Coach Chappel sent to Abbott, explaining that they had some linemen hurt in their Monday JV game. I also heard the same thing about them offering to play them even if they put some sophmores on the team. I can't imagine backing out of your biggest rivalry. And I sure can't believe that a coach would go out lying to his players, parents and community about another team. It seems to me that if NL had cancelled, they wouldn't be sending out emails requesting a replacement FR game on the coaches' listserve (which they did), nor going an hour somewhere to play someone else. Is the SL freshmen program in trouble? Their head coach appears to be trying to save face by cancelling a game and then covering it up. If that is the case, I would say the whole program might be hurting if that is the leadership it is under.

Good to see Grant get off to a good start. However, I am sure that coach Davis is not satisfied with what all he saw Friday night. Too many mistakes that should've made it a lot more impressive score. However, I know Coach will work to get them on the right track. I heard he got some new coaches this year from Somerset and Belfry, so that looks like a up and coming staff, and a good program. Congrats to the Braves!:dancingpa

I like this idea. The idea of the vast majority of teams making the playoffs makes it less of an accomplishment. It is one of the things I like about football, it is (or was) an accomplishment, unlike other sports who hold district tourneys. I also like Red Dog's idea. Why not have 1a champ play 2a champ,3a champ play 4a champ,5a champ play 6a champ? It would make an interesting ending for a season. As it is now, I think 1a champ would only be champion over about 40 schools. I have thought this would be interesting. You would still be champ of your own class, but why not see who is best of the best. One champion; what a novel concept!:scared:

Let me add another aspect of football absent in other sports; the sacrifice of the athlete. Other sports may make a player tired, but football is a physical, painful, beating that fatigues the player like no other. To see a player in the fourth quarter, bruised, muddied, bloodied, and you know he is absolutely exhausted, but he still lines up for the goal-line stand, you see the passion. Every once in a while, I player in another sport will become physically hurt and fight through, and it is special to see their determination and will to win overcome, but in football, you see that almost every game. That is the human spirit, and that is football!

So many of the above reasons ring true for me as well. I still get excited when I am driving to a stadium and see the lights in the distance. It's the atmosphere. However, I will state one thing that I think is the result of football being so special, but in a way is a reason it is special; it is a social event! People plan their time around this once a week extravaganza. How many times (except for major tourneys, or playoffs) have you scheduled everything around a basketball or baseball or soccer game? Even if the team is horrible, there is still a sense of excitement in the air that you rarely see with any other sport.

I would imagine that this is a tough situation for a coach when a player knows he is good enough to start, and uses it to take advantage. Of course, the questions the coach needs to ask are: Is that the case with this player? (according to the above quote, it is) Will that player's talent help enough this year to overcome the potential downfall that could follow as a result of letting him play (why would others in the future put all of that effort into it when they know if they are good enough, the spot will be there for them) Do you make an example of the player and risk the chance of more losses now in order to prevent it from happening again? (you are also denying them the chance to play, although they brought it on themselves) Basically, it boils down to win now (with the extra talent) at the risk of the same thing happening later, or take your lumps now and win later (if you haven't alienated fans, players, etc. by keeping them from winning now. Even though it's not really your fault but the players, rest assured you will get the blame) Fun times for a coach because a few stud players (I assume) don't care about the team like they should (and more than likely don't realize the predicament that they have put the team, coach, program, and themselves into)

Dissapointed, but not surprised that Clay held it close to the vest tonight. However, I would think that the varsity, no matter how much the coaches try to tell them we are not trying to win, feel disappointed in the results. It gives me mixed feelings. I saw several coaching staffs there, so it is wise to not show everything, but I don't see, mentally, how the kids walk away feeling good about it. Then again, Corbin looked good enough that it may not have mattered what Clay threw at them. Also, I thought Cashen did a very good job. Yeah, he threw a few up for grabs, but it was a scrimmage. I have seen him play before and he has better decision making skills than that. I also saw him absolutely zip some balls in the flats that allowed #20, who looked like a good athlete as well, to make a play with.
