From what I've heard from a few parents, the players get to pick where they want to play instead of being placed in positions by coaches. I haven't seen any games to see if that is truly what it looks like. I've also been told the froshmore and JV teams aren't concerned about winning and losing, as it's about player development. That is great and all, but if they're not in the correct positions, then it's a moot point.

That's what I get for typing out 1 paragraph, going to a meeting, and then typing out the 2nd without reading the 1st paragraph. Completely disconnected post. Yesterday was just one of those days.

Let's just be real here. Highlands isn't getting back to the state championship with his style of coaching. He may be the nicest guy in the world, but he isn't going to lead them to a deep playoff run. The one thing that has separated NDA and Highlands from the rest of NKY over the years is their style of play (last year for NDA you can say just sheer talent as they were loaded). They play possession soccer. The same can be said about the teams that play in the state championship game each year. This kickball style of soccer that SK now plays along with many high schools work against most inferior teams, but they're not going to win you the big games. Yes, you may get lucky once, but you're not going to get lucky twice. I haven't seen Highlands play yet this year, but sounds like they're tending this way at times too. Making negative passes and playing the ball back to your keeper are not bad things. Give your defenders outlets instead of just having them kick it out of bounds. Switch the field by making that negative pass back to your 6 or centerbacks. I know some will say you need the players to play possession soccer, but I've seen plenty of teams over these past few years that have had the talent, but coaches continue with this old school, kickball mentality.

Turned it on when I got home last night. Realized I hated both teams with a passion, so I changed the channel. Lol.

Not sure the reasoning, but could be due to the QB situation. The JV and Froshmore QBs are both down injured. They've plugged a sophomore into the spot that hasn't played the position before, and he's been handling duties for both teams. Not sure if he got injured against Ryle the other night or not. As for total numbers, I know they went up this year after Brossart left. Turkeyfoot numbers are up too, so I expect them to finally field a true freshman team next year as they have 29 on the 8th grade roster this year.

And Dixie's staff is completely new this year, so ?‍♂️

I think Dixie's offensive style gives them the best chance to win games. They're small upfront and inexperienced nearly everywhere else. Their goal is to keep the game close in the 1st half to take advantage of a tired defense in the 2nd half. It has worked in every game except the CovCath game. Defensively, they're relatively small across the board there too with the exception of Rice. If Highlands has size and depth, especially across their lines, then they'll have the edge in this game. If Dixie cannot wear you down, then they're going to struggle due to their inexperience. Officials will also play a role in this game, and not from a "homer" standpoint. Dixie benefits from officials being in shape as their style of play wears them out to. There have been numerous times this year already where the officials have slowed them down offensively.

That would be Austin Waddell. That would be a big loss for BW.

Dixie's style of offense can either keep this game close or cause it to get out of hand. If they limit penalties and turnovers, and CovCath plays players both ways, then this game will be close. If CovCath does not play players both ways, and Dixie struggles with key penalties and turnovers again, then CovCath likely rolls. Dixie is an undersized group this year, but they don't quit.

Tecmo Bowl, which apparently my kids now play Retro Bowl all the time on their phones/tablets. I also liked Blades of Steel, Baseball Stars, and Contra (with the cheat code).

They've got a pretty good 6th grade running back / linebacker that recently transferred there, but he's currently playing for the Bengal Tigers. If he grows, he'll be a solid player come high school.

The Kenton and Campbell County youth teams now stop at 6th grade. The senior division was dropped when middle school ball started. Boone County youth programs run through middle school as the schools don't have teams. They play in a league down in KY. As for Cov Cath, it wouldn't surprise me if they have a couple teams at the 7th and 8th grade levels, or they have a JV team of combined 7th and 8th graders. I know some of the larger schools put together JV teams to get those kids more game action.

Ryker is a player. When the kid touches the ball, you expect something big to happen.

That would be Moe. It's his first time playing football, so he's still trying to figure things out. The boys that also play basketball talked him into playing this year.

That was a fun game to watch. Early on it looked like a Cooper blowout, but Dixie fought back. Dixie’s 2 platoon system wore down Cooper as their offense went uptempo the entire game. Dixie had a chance to win it at the end, but it wasn’t meant to be. Getting in the hole early, penalties, and dropped passes killed Dixie.

He's going to have an interesting day today as he still teaches at Dixie.

From talking with Burke in the offseason, they had a little over 90 in their offseason program. Someone said they have just over 80 now. Dixie Youth has their largest numbers since coming back in 2019. Numbers are slightly down with Juniors, but Midget, Starters, and Flag are way up. Turkeyfoot has around 60 kids between their 7th and 8th grade teams, so they're seeing improved numbers. The kids love playing for Sekowski and his crew. I think they're probably a year off from fielding a true freshman team again. I know Burke was short an assistant or two prior to the season, but he didn't want to hire just anyone to fill the roles. He would rather be slightly short-handed than risk impacting the culture he is trying to build. And as a side note, those red jerseys are hopefully just temporary. Replacement jerseys weren't ordered last year, and by the time they were, they wouldn't be ready for the home opener so they had to scramble and get whatever they could in time.
