  1. Love to make this little soiree, and I will be in the area as well. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to get there until well after 7. Probably for the best...
  2. Now this is the kind of heads-up I tune in to BGP for.:ylsuper: I've seen both. Both are still very good.
  3. Good info. His interest in the job makes much more sense in this case.
  4. Tuned in to the MLB forum looking for a Reds/Indians thread. No such thread. so much for tracking the season via BGP. Did read page two of this thread though. Are we arguing Bruce's value, or whether he should be traded?
  5. So I was mostly right. First gig as head coach was at Madeira in 97 (surprised I remembered the year). I thought he was at Sycamore, but it was Northwest (I really don't remember him there). Then as the head coach at Fairfield. Tim made a good name for himself as a coach in Cincinnati circles and was/is respected among many football people. He was one of the city's hottest young coaches (his name came up for a lot of jobs) while at Madeira. Over the year's his resume leveled off (as with many coaches) and he was never able to have the success at Fairfield he (and every coach that goes there) envisioned. Tom Grippa couldn't turn the Indians around either. I am surprised he pursued the Newport job. I'm not sure how close to retirement he is in Ohio, and he looks at this as a possible double-dipping thing. Unless he's retired in Ohio, I can't imagine he'll be in the building at Newport. In that case, the commute from Fairfield to Newport every day alone is a chore. I guess we'll see how that all plays out.
  6. I'm assuming it's Tim Viox that was hired. I've never heard of Tom Viox. Anyway, if it is Tim Viox, this is a very good hire by Newport at this late juncture. I will also say, it's a job I'm surprised Tim Viox pursued. So maybe it is Tom Viox. Tim Viox has been around for awhile, taking over as the Maderia head coach in like 97ish. He turned that program around, which led to him bouncing around from job to job a bit at bigger schools. I'm pretty sure his last head coaching job was at Fairfield, he may have been at Sycamore as well. I do know he got his head coaching start at Maderia, and coached at Fairfield. I'm not positive about Sycamore though. I'll have more info or add more to the story when I have more time.
  7. couple thoughts: Grandal would be blocked by Meso. A year ago Meso, was the man. Boxberger would be blocked by Chapman. He keeps going to all-star games. One of each had to be traded. I'd have enjoyed watching Alonso move to left, though it may have been a disaster. Again, he had to be moved, or the above. Not like they gave up players in places the cupboard was bare. I can live with what they gave up, if you believe in what they have in those places. Never a Latos fan. Posted it on here. Zero to do with off-field stuff. Never liked him as a pitcher for very long. Bad trade for the Reds only because of what they got in return. Should have done a better job choosing who they wanted
  8. 30 Years ago today, July 13, 1985, a little concert event known as Live Aid played to the whole world. Venue's were JFK Stadium in Philadelphia and Wembley Stadium in London. Both shows sold out and played roughly simultaneously much of the day (time difference excluded). The event was organized by Bob Geldof to raise money for the African famine and inspired by Band Aid and USA for Africa musical collaborations for the same cause. A few tidbits of the concert as I remember them: Best estimate is 1.5 billion (with a B) people tuned in to the event, which was broadcast in 150 countries. Phil Collins played in both venues, which set some sort of record for playing so far apart on the same day. He took a Concord from A to B. Queen went from being a huge rock band to being legendary based on their show to close Wembley. Everyone who was anyone at the time ended up performing. Pick an artist, if they were around in 1985 and didn't play there, it was their own fault. I can't remember how many millions this raised but my guess is you can count it in 10's. Personal notes: As a teen at the time, I was both disinterested and distracted by other things leading up to this concert. I had no idea it was anything at all. I was a smart kid. I was on a long car ride the day of the event and kept listening to Westwood 1's coverage all day. Seemed like a lot of hyperbole to me by the announcer's but they kept talking about how big this was. I guess they were right. There are some decent docs on the making of the concert. Some decent stuff from performances on Utube as well. Read a bit about the event today if you get a chance, or share what your thoughts. Final thought: for my money, best live music event ever. Could it be topped today?
  9. This. Hits the nail on the head. Casino is charging for anyone entering from 6:30 to 10:30 in the am. on weekdays. Daily charge for those drivers. More than fair. Love the timing as well. All-Star weekend, plenty of other news in the city. This one gets barely a mention. Less PR hit for the Horse. They do not miss a trick.
  10. Good thread. I'll weigh in. Football lines are certainly bigger now, almost massive in the NFL with their size AND athleticism. Certainly bigger people in both height and body mass. Any high school line that averages 275 though, makes me chuckle. Not going to find many high motoring high school athletes cruising around in the 280 range. Much less five on the same high school line. In this case, bigger just meant too much super sizing. On baseball, interesting point on the 75 team. Height also is a factor. A lot of these guys were 6-0 or shorter. On the plus side in baseball: More year round weight training, more attention paid to diet, and supplements that add mass (the legal kind). Other side that may add weight to baseball players: Guaranteed contracts worth a ton (less off-season motivation), Less emphasis on conditioning now and more emphasis on "specialized training". Nobody's asking any baseball players to run "gassers" or 10 first to third's in spring training these days. They need to be strong enough and trained enough to do their jobs. IMO, we see more overuse injuries today because of this, as well as more pulled muscles. But what the heck do I know? I called Cueto fat a few days ago, and somebody said he was fit and fast. Dude can pitch, but he's leaving his shirt on at the pool party.
  11. This. It's an open market for Cueto, and a matter of competition. IMO he's the best pitcher available to a contender this month, so the competition to get him should be pretty stout. IMO, if the Reds deal him for just a top 100 prospect and then some other minor leaguers they are insane. Top 100 prospect's are a dime a dozen on their worth. Gotta be more than that. Need a major league regular and a top 100. You don't want to give this guy up for the next Austin Kearns.
  12. Totally agree with so many of the posts in the thread. To expand on a few of those points: 1. Hoosiers, yes. If there is a state full of worse drivers than Indiana, I haven't been there (and I've been to a lot of states.) Ohioans, I never understood the complaint. Good and bad, like everywhere else. 2. I've said for years, and likely posted on here that part of receiving social security or medicare should be an agreement to retake your driving test every five years. Waay to many of the bad drivers I encounter are those LAWildcat described. Flip side is, what do you want them to do? They're still active and still have places they have to go (doctors, grocery, pharmacy). How are they supposed to get there? 3. Cell phone distractions are becoming epidemically dangerous. I see them with both sexes, though women are the vast majority. I promise you the technology is there to disable texting, or cell phones all together while a car is in motion. 4. So many people have hit on the turn signal thing. It's more than a courtesy, it's vital to safety and traffic flow. It's also a lost art. Sadly, I see many police cruisers act as if their car in not equipped with such equipment. Example of the day for turn signal importance; I'm sitting at a red light hoping to turn right on red, with several cars behind me. Car approaching has no signal on yet suddenly turns right at my intersection. You just caused a chain reaction of inconveniences to X number of people. 5. Drivers who will not turn right on red. I always wonder if they have a body in the trunk and don't want to take any chances, because no one can be this stupid. If their is no sign next to the light, it's legal (and expected once upon a time.) Convinces me more and more that either most people can't read, or most just will not read past LOL, J/K, OMG.
  13. I'm in the OTR area roughly one or two times a month, occasionally after dark. I have felt unsafe in the area, especially during warm weather months. Seems like some of those stop lights stay red forever sometimes. FWIW a local anchor was a theft victim while dining in OTR over the weekend. My visits downtown will likely stay much closer to the river the rest of the summer.
  14. How much? How old is Sutter? What were the specs of such a contract?
  15. This. Reading accounts of how this played out left a bad taste in mouth regarding Bo and all his supposed, "sanctity." Didn't care at all for his comments after the Duke game. Didn't really care much for his comments after the UK game. Seemed to go from awful pretentious to awful whiny, awfully fast. Grad rates seem to be an issue with some. Personally, I have no idea if they were within the program. I'll do my reading here first, if posted. I will note, it's not like the guy has won with Gomer and Goober. He's had good players too. One could argue he's had teams take earlier exits than should in the tournament because of his "style". Heck, one could argue Wisconsin had the better team when they lost to UK in 2014.
  16. No it's not, and there's a difference between recruiting and self-promotion. His overindulgence in the latter is not something I'm fond of.
  17. Sounds like you're on the fence with Mick.
  18. You added nothing in the first place. Equation is simple. You have the lead, late in the game. Franchise pitcher (and the franchise's top trading block) is the lead runner. Why put him in harm's way? Simple question. If Cueto had slid he would have likely been safe. Why make him slide? This isn't grade school ball. Terrible call. Tell me one good thing that could have come from the situation that outweighs the potential for bad.
  19. As far as Mike and Mike itself, as a entertainment that's to each his own. As a source of actually having leads and sources, I'll take this show over most any on talk radio. Greenberg is old school in his professionalism when it comes to sources. So, when Mike and Mike tell me Cal starts all these rumors through his people, and then laugh about it, I buy it. I believe he has the sources to stand behind the statement. Doesn't make the show entertaining. Makes it more credible than most sports talk shows though. And, a double disclaimer: I almost never listen to sports talk and when I do most of it is actually Lance; I don't hate Cal.
  20. Agreed, I chuckled a little out loud when I heard that. It was spot on funny. The only person in college sports better at self-promotion than Cal is Saban.
  21. Lots of talk around Cincinnati about a kid (or maybe it's two kids) who may or may not be attending Clark next year. Sounds like the same kid we're talking about in this thread. Unless of course there are multiple seven footers from Africa that are deciding where to go to school in the fall.
  22. I have no idea if the Bethel rumor is even remotely true. But, it would really surprise me. Bethel is traditionally either bad or very bad in a weak conference that goes largely unnoticed. Bad meets worse on most nights in the SBAAC. Academically, the school has its own struggles.
  23. Last graph first, the Reds scored zero runs in the inning. Inning killed. That aside, I just can't see any reason this is a good play in MLB. Particularly for a team ready to move said base runner for a chance at enhancing the future. 1. Cueto is a a pro athlete just like John Kruk. Great pitcher, elite. I'm not going to call him "athletic" though. Why does he rarely run hard on contact? 2. Baserunning is never rocket science, but often overlooked. How much has Cueto worked on it, ever? You can't move on contact in this situation. 3. National league pitchers slide much? Really? There's a reason he didn't slide. Kershaw going to slide into third up 2-1 in the seventh on a bunt attempt? This isn't knothole. 4. You can't eliminate risk, the Reds keep Cueto in the rotation and he could get hurt on any pitch. It happens. You don't enhance risk. This play did that. Major league difference. Not looking for the negative at all. Just a stupid call. Zero reason to put Cueto in that situation. Pull him, or let BP bat. It's not the ninth, and you have the lead. In all honesty, up 2-1 with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, if BP doesn't bunt I'm not even blinking an eye. On graph two, the Reds and bunting have been suspect for a year or two. The possibility of terrible execution has to enter the equation.
  24. Interesting timing. Hope no illness is involved.
