Wireman, I agree with you on your "head prediction". Elliott County will not fold as did my Royals and Raceland will not hit nearly as high a percentage of its shots as it did Thursday night.

I'll stand by my post and I think most neutral observers, as am I in regard to Russell and Rowan County, will agree. However, Defenz, your post, although in mocking fashion, still stated a good bit of truth. It also indicates that you must have gotten into Wireman's medicine bottle. I didn't say Russell would win by twenty. I just said they would win. If you say twenty, that sounds a couple of points high but it is fine if you say so. However, such posts will cost you access to Wireman's Lady Viking pills.

Since the other two teams in the district are Ashland and Fairview, I doubt that it will be "one and out" for both teams. I would still think that Rose Hill is favored to win the district and remember that the tournament will be held at Boyd County. I'll take Rose Hill in this one and I expect to see a good game from Rose Hill's seniors- all four of them.

Jonathan broke the record with a nice three pointer near the end of the first quarter giving him five points for the game. The game was stopped and there was a short ceremony in which the accomplishment was recognized and the game ball was given to Jonathan and passed on to his mother. Legendary Russell coach, Marvin Meredith was in attendance and it was nice to see Jonathan go over to Coach Meredith and include him in the ceremony. Seeing this significant event in Russell athletic history and seeing both Coach Meredith and Coach McGlone sitting together made me even more aware of the great tradition that exists at Russell in athletics and in academics. You Russellites have much to be proud of and you take a back seat to no one. You are to be commended for your excellence. By the way, I know it doesn't count in setting the Russell record but it may interest some to know that Jonathan's first two varsity points were scored against Lewis County in January of 2003 when he was playing as an eighth grader at Rose Hill.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that Rose Hill lost because of officiating. That had nothing to do with the outcome. On Thursday night, the better team won. No one should dispute that.

I thought I would garner your attention, Wireman. I'll stand by the post.

I would suspect that Rowan County got its win over Russell a little early. If the teams meet again in Morehead, it won't happen again. Russell has far more more talent and size than does the Rowan County.

Regardless of the reason or reasons for what takes place and regardless of your personal loyalties and prejudices, all of you (if honest) must admit that there is at least an element of truth to the main theme of GottaRebound's post. I applaud him/her for being up front enough to express it because I have heard it discussed a goodly number of times by pro-Rose Hillers, anti-Rose Hillers, and by those who don't care one way or the other. I have heard some condemn it and I have heard others condone and support it. The point is that, right or wrong, it is seen as an issue.

There is too much emphasis on what Rose Hill didn't do and too little on what Raceland did. We need to acknowledge the fine effort of Raceland.

I'll repeat for the umpteenth time my earlier observation. Rose Hill is still a year away. Whatever is accomplished this year is a bonus. - Wireman is correct in that the region is wide open although I'll still pick Russell.

I can understand Coach Hicks taking a personal stance in this matter. After all, his future is at stake. However, I don't understand the actions of the GC administration in general and the superintendent in particular. I have always heard that the GC system is saturated with politics. I have heard that it needs a complete cleaning out of the central office and a new start. From the actions of the superintendent, I would agree and the superintendent should be the first to go.

I posted several times that the referees's whistles would decide the game and that was the case. Now, that isn't to imply favoritism but to point out that, if any of Rose Hill's three best known seniors spent a material amount of time on the bench, the Lady Royals could not win. And, that is how it happened. Period. Rose Hill cannot win when Terry and Queen only take 21 shots between them. They cannot beat a good team without their point guard running the offense and defense. but, instead, on the bench in foul trouble. I don't recall the coaching staff missing a shot, failing to play defense, or making needless turnovers. Coaches cannot play the game for their players. You must have your primetimers, if you have any, take over on the floor. Now, having said that, I think we need to concentrate on the effort of Raceland. They did what they needed to do to win. Vanderhoof seemed to me to be more aggressive from the start than did Rose Hill's big girls and proved she can play with anyone. I'm sure that all in the area will support the winner of the Raceland-Elliott County game as they travel to Richmond.

Holy Family's wins over Ashland were, though few, very special. A search of history indicates that the first one was in the 1957 Greenbo Invitational Tournament (now the AIT) at the Ashland National Guard Armory. Holy Family, led by Bob Gilmore and Dan Stephenson, beat Ashland, led by Herb Conley and Dickie Fillmore, 48-37. That particular Holy Family team also won the 64th District and eventually lost to Olive Hill in the 16th Region Tournament. At that time, the 64th District consisted of twelve schools- six from Boyd County and six from Greenup County. Holy Family defeated Booker T. Washington of Ashland for the title. BTW had beaten Ashland and HF had defeated Russell in the semi-finals. It was the only time in history, I believe, that Ashland was third best in the city.

My reference to the whistles was to say that the outcome will probably be determined by how the officials call the game. If they let the girls play, Rose Hill has a much better chance of winning than if the officials nitpick. If Rose Hill's seniors don't spend much of the game in foul trouble, Rose Hill will win. If the whistles are quick and constant, Raceland will win. Therefore, as go ther whistles, so goes the game.

A review of Russell's schedule indicates that its next game is Friday night at Russell against Bath County. I sure plan to be in attendance to see Jonathan break the scoring record. I hope many BGPers of all loyalties, as well as Red Devils from the recent and not so recent past, will also attend. It isn't often that we have a chance to see history made and, with the fine and long tradition of Russell and its outstanding list of players from the past, Jonathan's accomplishment will be significant.

This is a wonderful achievement by Jonathan particularly when you consider the outstanding tradition at Russell and the many fine athletes who have played for the school. It deserves much more publicity than it has received to date.

Since they are two "docs", don't you suppose that they are at Merrill, Lynch?

Dakotah deserves any and all honors which he recieves because there is no one who works any harder to make himself a better all around player. He is the first in the gymnasium and the last to leave and this is the case year around. The only athlete that I have seen that, in my opinion, works as hard as Dakotah is O.J. Mayo. Both are focused and both are determined to succeed. They are mature beyond their years. Both will succeed. It was an honor and a pleasure to watch O.J. both on and off the court at Rose Hill. It is equally an honor and pleasure to watch Dakotah.

Interesting post. If you are suggesting that some of the "better known" publics may "court" a little, that has, I believe, already happened a few times which should be to the surprise of no one. I don't know if any of the "inquiries" included AD jobs or not. But, then, one never knows what goes on, does one?
