I didn't see the other one. This score is correct. According to the Daily Independent, Rowan County was called for 53 fouls. How can you get called for 53 fouls? Hard to believe.

Doing this in the "fairest way" will be unique for this district. I believe it is safe to say that only Rose Hill pretends to operate that way. The others protect their own best interests. Rose Hill may have had one friend in the district but those bridges were certainly destroyed yesterday.

It didn't a couple of years ago. Precedence is important and the "decision makers" haven't changed.

With a draw you have a chance. With a seed you have no chance. Poor draws just happen. You can't control them but you do know that the law of averages tells us it will somewhat even out somewhere along the line. If you are "down", seeding can never help. In a draw, if you are #4, you may draw #3 or, at least, #2. In a seed, #4 always gets #1. I am looking at Rose Hill's best interests for the long run when, very likely, #4 years will likely be the norm just as they were in the pre-Mayo days. Over the short term, the next six or seven years, seeding may or may not help. I suppose it is kind of like our government does when it mortgages the future and burdens later generations to please someone today. But, then, that is just my opinion and it is apparently in the minority.

Man, you had a really good post until you stuck in those last two sentences. No one is saying Mayo should be treated differently. However, he should not be condemned for exercising his rights. The real question is whether or not the referee treated him differently than he would another player. Many believe he did so.

No one said there should be a different set of rules, Frances. If you will remove the hogwash from your own eyes you will note that I am stating why Mayo's situation is seen much differently and considered more intensively than would a similar situation involving a typical high school basketball player. You may not like Mayo exercising his rights when he feels he has been wronged but that is his right to do so. The possible effect on him, both shortterm and longterm, is multitudes more significant than it would be for another of "lesser notariety". The fact that many dollars will be lost and many more could be lost because of this incident are merely a statement of reality. Whether I think Mayo should be treated differently or not is of no importance. The fact is that, because of his status, he is treated differently and will continue to be treated differently. And, many "lower profile" individuals, like possibly the subject referee, will always be looking for a chance to stick their heads into the shadows of the limelight. Not a pretty picture, I will agree. However, it is reality. I realize that our country is built upon the "idea" that all are to be treated equally. However, the real truth is that some are treated more equally than are others. Also, some are much bigger targets for those seeking their fleeting moment of fame (ie: ESPN coverage) than are others.

When I read about a basketball game, often the first two statistics I look at are the number of fouls called on each team and the number of foul shots shot by each team. It is, to me, amazing that, regardless of the score, the home team usually commits less fouls and shoots more foul shots. There are, of course, a goodly number of exceptions. I would like to see a breakdown of schools, say the 16th Region for instance, as to fouls called at home, fouls called on the road, foul shots at home, and foul shots on the road. Now, before you referee defenders get upset, let me hasten to state that I am not suggesting any kind of conspiracy. I just think such statistics would be both interesting and revealing.

That is a risk taken by both sides. I would expect that we only have heard the tip of the iceberg from both viewpoints. You are correct as to what would likely happen if Hicks took it to court and lost. I'm sure he is well aware of that fact. Nonetheless, he continues to fight while GC appears to be trying to get it to go away. The fact that each is taking a completely different approach should make one seeking the facts wonder just who has more to lose. Could it be that GC has a few "items" hid under some rocks? I'm just asking but you must admit that, if they are clean, they are sure handling matters in a strange way.

The difference is, obviously, that my opinion carries no weight whereas the opinion of the Greenup County group does. I have an opinion on the matter that means nothing to anyone but me. I just believe that someone should point out that most stories have two sides and that our train needs to travel in both directions occasionally. the full truth rarely runs in only one direction. I will readily admit that I dion't know the absolute facts. But, then, I would submit that, most likely, no one does.

Your argument is weak. It uses the typical method of overkill. To compare the situation with Mayo to the typical technical foul scenerio is ridiculous. Like it or not, Mayo is not a typical high school basketball player. Whatever he does or doesn't do is national sports news. I didn't make it that way and you didn't make it that way. Nonetheless, that's how it is whether we like it or not. There seems to be a reasonable amount of evidence that the referee had an agenda and that he carried out his agenda. The result is that Mayo will sit out three games and that his name has been further tarnished. Both of these results influence a lot of greenbacks. Greenbacks run the world of sports just as they run most everything else. Mayo is the drawing card for HHS. People come from many, many miles to see him play. That means a lot of money for HHS and for restaurants, gasoline stations, malls, etc. all around Huntington. If he doesn't play, many stay away and the cash coffers are not filled. A false charge also may cost Mayo a few million dollars somewhere along the line. If not in salary, how about in endorsements? No, Intentional Foul, we cannot compare this situation with the irrelevant calling of a technical foul, or two technical fouls, on a typical high school kid. That is just a fact.

I didn't intend to imply that most of my knowledge is other than heresay. I oppose heresay being used as fact. When used, as it often is on BGP, it should be identified as such. I also didn't imply that Sutton orchestrated the activities at Greenup County. He certainly isn't in a position to do that. I merely said that, from reliable sources (actually not heresay if they are repeating what the principal characters told them directly or what was actually stated in their presence; otherwise, it is heresay), I understand that Sutton has been a "player" in the drama and that he has knowingly damaged Hicks. I would not expect Hicks to sacrifice his future merely to bring "peace" to Greenup County. First of all, his future as a coach is directly on the line. Second, Greenup County has never had any peace and it isn't likely to start now. Hicks needs to do whatever he can to protect his rights because it is a sure bet that, if he doesn't, no one else will and he will be crucified by the Greenup County hierarchy. I do think that he now has representation superior to that of the Greenup group. I guess we'll see how this marathon plays out. I really have no dog in this fight. My interest is in full disclosure and justice. I have no idea as to where the facts will lead. However, from reading the local newspaper and BGP, I do know the present direction of the train.

Come on, TOPCAT, don't question TinCup11. He already has everything figured out. Nonetheless, I'll bet the ultra-egotist portrayed on his avatar would jump at the chance to coach this "unseemly teenager".

By "players" I was not referring to team players. As with Sutton, I don't know any of them. By "players", I am referring to participants in the melodrama. I know nothing of Sutton that is negative. I'm sure he is a good man. However, he did have full prior knowledge of what he was "inheriting" and I can't believe that he is St. Thomas More before King Henry VIII.

I will certainly accept your information. Mr. Boucher would be a definitive source. Of course, it could be argued that the lack of a stated "sundown" clause doesn't in and of itself mean that one isn't available. Often, the lack of a stated prohibition of an act can be interpreted to mean that the action is, therefore, not prohibited and actually allowed because there is no express prohibition. The fact that it has been done on a couple of occasions locally, and maybe more so around the Commonwealth, gives some precedence for it. I suppose we would need to know if the practice has ever been tried and "stricken down" as "illegal". I would guess that it hasn't. I respect Mr. Boucher's opinion but I don't automatically accept it as law set in stone.

I don't know Sutton. However, it is clear that he willingly and anxiously accepted the job with full knowledge of the continuing turmoil that seems to always exist at Greenup County. I have been told by "players" in this drama that Sutton "undercut" Hicks and that it is common knowledge among the partisans in the Greenup County Musketeer community. If that is the case, it is reasonable to assume that Sutton will receive what he delivered. In a "perfect society" that may not happen. However, the western end of Greenup County falls short of that distinction. Although all I have is heresay and what I read in the newspaper (also a lot of heresay), I must conclude that Sutton is not a sympathetic victim but merely a willing participant in the process. He didn't just appear on the scene. And, regardless of the reasons, the Musketeers are not exactly "progressing" under his leadership and that, after all, is the "bottom line" in this area.

Frances, we have found common ground. Those who have reached the age of eighteen should be held responsible for their actions. However, they also have every right to pursue all avenues which may offer a defense or, at least, may mitigate the circumstances. There seems to be a good plurality, if not a majority, of those who have "viewed" the video of the incident who have concluded that the referee is, at best, not "without sin" and, at worst, a fake and troublemaker. This being at least a material interpretation of the matter clearly leads to the conclusion that Mayo has every right to pursue what he sees as justice. This certainly includes an investigation of the intent of the referee in calling the two technical fouls in the first place. What was his intent? It is a reasonable issue. Some BGPers are practicing automatic judgment and conviction and seem to want a quick execution. Our system doesn't, and shouldn't, work that way. We who are supporters of Mayo are not idolators. That is insulting. However, we are loyal to one whom we know and care about. I believe most would find that position as a positive and not a negative in today's society. As a national celebrity of sorts, he should have no more rights than anyone else. However, he should have no less rights either.

Now there, fellow posters, is a real assault on the rules of evidence. Cite a couple of facts and then bury us with personal opinion, supposition, and statements that seem to reek of, you got it, jealousy. The fact that Blue Blazer fully concurs merely adds substance to the obvious conclusion.

Excellent post. Those who excel often have a bevy of loyal supporters and an even larger group of those who want to tear them down. OJ has an abundance of both and those who have been "upset" by his achievements are often haunted long after he has left the scene of those achievements.

Frances, I also respect your opinion as I do ladiesbballcoach. However, I must add that, as with ladiesbballcoach, your opinions on Mayo are based on heresay. The fact that many defend Mayo rather than defame him should not be interpreted as idolatry. You make a concerted effort to always defend any and all things Ashland related. I always figured it was loyalty and never considered it as idolatry. Was I wrong?
