The current situation at Greenup Co.

I was at the game last night, This is very unfair to coach Sutton, you have Hicks still in the stands and talking to players and parents. Not to mention any names but they are a couple of players doggin it. Wheather it be because Hicks is not the coach or because they just simply dont care at this point. They are not playing hard. Standing around not getting anything done. The shame of it is they are nobody on the bench to bring in to push the ones on the floor. If the players that are not playing hard dont decide to pick it up then the season is over. They wont get out of Lewis County with a win with the attitudes they have right now. Cant really judge Sutton on this years performance with efforts like he is getting from a couple of his players. This is the softest Greenup team Ive seen in a long time. The contraversy this season may be more than some of the players can handle. Especially when it is clear that some of the parents are still supporting Hicks. Its funny that the kids of the parents doing this are the ones not giving effort.

I think this is an excellent post.

Those parents that were going to extremes to defend Hicks should now be pulling just as hard to support Sutton. If they are going to undercut Sutton, then they and their sons will get exactly what they deserve.

I also agree completely with Gatorlover in regards to the kids that are not giving 100% effort on the floor. If a kid doesn't want to play hard, then I hope Sutton pulls them from the game. I don't know what Sutton has on the bench, but I would back him playing sophomores and freshmen if the older kids are just going to "mail it in". As a coach, I can lose with younger kids just as well as I can lose with an older kid that won't give effort. At least the younger kid gets experience, and the older kid will learn that playing time on the floor isn't some sort of birthright.

We've all seen parents defending Hicks - and that's all fine and good. Those parents should be mature enough to realize that Hicks is no longer the coach - Sutton is. If those parents have one shred of decency about them, then they should be doing everything they can to support Sutton now. Undercutting Sutton will only make the remainder of this season miserable for ALL of the kids on the Greenup County team.

I hope Sutton gets some support from these people (and their sons), and I will go farther and say that I hope he gets a chance to sit in the big chair next year as well. It would be unfair to judge him as a coach, based on what he can do with this circus surrounding him.

I don't know Sutton. However, it is clear that he willingly and anxiously accepted the job with full knowledge of the continuing turmoil that seems to always exist at Greenup County.

I have been told by "players" in this drama that Sutton "undercut" Hicks and that it is common knowledge among the partisans in the Greenup County Musketeer community. If that is the case, it is reasonable to assume that Sutton will receive what he delivered. In a "perfect society" that may not happen. However, the western end of Greenup County falls short of that distinction.

Although all I have is heresay and what I read in the newspaper (also a lot of heresay), I must conclude that Sutton is not a sympathetic victim but merely a willing participant in the process. He didn't just appear on the scene. And, regardless of the reasons, the Musketeers are not exactly "progressing" under his leadership and that, after all, is the "bottom line" in this area.

I think this is an excellent post.

I know Coach Sutton personally and I can assure you that he has done nothing to undercut Hicks. He has been a trouper to accept this job under these conditions. He has great character, and the one big difference not only from Hick's but coaches before him is He will always put the kids first. He is about the kids and cares about the kids. It is not about him. Too many coaches want the spotlight on them instead of the kids. Too many big ego's in todays coaching. Alot of coaches has lost track of why they are there. Several people were put on the spot when interviewed. Do you tell the truth, or do you lower your standards to cover for someone clearly breaking the rules. I dont call that undercutting I call that telling the truth. If you have to lie to cover someone than that should tell you something right there.;) I got a feeling these players that have talked to you are the same ones doggin it on the floor.

By "players" I was not referring to team players. As with Sutton, I don't know any of them. By "players", I am referring to participants in the melodrama. I know nothing of Sutton that is negative. I'm sure he is a good man. However, he did have full prior knowledge of what he was "inheriting" and I can't believe that he is St. Thomas More before King Henry VIII.

Oh so you say coaches before him were all about egos. If you only had a clue of how many people (not just players) Coach Randy Ward aided in their life’s, including the current interim coach. I think that you statement about all coaches is too broad and comes from a very narrow point of view. I know personally that Ward was there to help out families in need around the holidays, especially. Ward was that way from the time I met him in the early 80's. I'm not saying that the current interim coach is undermining or undercutting, but maybe he should rethink some of the steps that have led to his current position and remember the people that helped him those many years ago.

These parents that are supporting Hicks has no reason not to support Sutton. He has done nothing but try to make the best out of a bad situation. You sit and watch these parents and it is like they want the kids to lose to make a point. They are parents of kids that graduated last year that are still hanging around keeping things stirred up. Jay Bilas is right. show some class and get away and give the team some space. If Hicks wants what is best for the team why is he still hanging around talking to parents and players. the best thing for the kids is for him to disappear and give them some room. He proves over and over again that this is all about Him. Im sure he sits in the stands and second guesses every move Coach Sutton makes and tries to rally people into beliveing he could do it better and they are people still listening. Thats amazing. What could come out of this except disruption. Hey guys, It doesnt matter if he can do or would have done it different or better. He is done at Greenup. there is a new coach and if the team plans on making it past the first game of the district, everyone better jump on and back Sutton or this team does not have a prayer to get to Morehead.:irked:

Nobody mentioned Coach Ward. They were other coaches before Hick's besides coach Ward. I know Coach Ward and he did do alot for the kids. The Hooters trip is every teenagers dream. Just kidding. He has done alot for his players and they always got treated first class by him. They are coaches that players have a possitive experience with and you will see them hang around the coach or come up and say Hi when they see Them. I didnt see too many previous players that played for Hicks in the GC gym the last few years.

:thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: Excedllent post Frances, I just got over to this thread and couldn't have said it any better. Jmo but the problem at GCHS has always been that a few people from a certain section of the county/district run the show. Politics have always been a problem down there. JMO.

I believe that they are more coaches from South( Greenup, Wurtland) of the Greenup Dam than from North(South Shore). I may be wrong. Here are the ones I know.

Nate Sutton- Boys Basketball- downtown Greenup

Eric Keaton- Girls basketball- Not sure I believe Ashland

Greg Logan- Baseball-1st street Lloyd

Jeane Galihue-Softball-Rt 1 greenup

Roger Gillum-boys golf-Rt 1 greenup

Lou Quellen-girls golf-Coal Branch greenup

Mike Sammons-Football-South Shore roots.

It's not so much the coaches that are from the South Shore end of the county it's the administrators who rule the roost that's what I believe the oldrambler is talking about.

By "players" I was not referring to team players. As with Sutton, I don't know any of them. By "players", I am referring to participants in the melodrama. I know nothing of Sutton that is negative. Scooterbob, I also do not know Hicks, Sutton, or any of the "players" of the Greenup melodrama, so I can be about as unbiased as it gets. You say you don't know Sutton and you say you are an opponent of hearsay, yet you now assume that Sutton has used machiavellian motives to acquire the head coaching job. Sutton may hate the way he obtained this position - he had to realize what a tough position it would put him in. Is it just possible that Sutton took the job because he loves the kids. I would think that Hicks would support a coach on his staff that has learned his system and would make a coaching transition easier for the boys. Even if Hicks doesn't personally like Sutton (which I have no info of) maybe he should put his own personal feeling on the back burner and help make the situation better for "his" kids. I have observed Hicks' behavior in the stands around the other parents, and whether he realizes it or not, I believe that it has had a negative impact on the situation (Since I am only giving my opinion of a situation that I have seen firsthand, I don't believe this is hearsay)

Scooterbob, I realize that due to your background that you don't like to see the rights of people trampled on, and I agree in most situations. However, there comes a point where a person should consider the effect that this "personal justice" is having on those around him. If Hicks truly loves his players, he should be willing to take some "personal injustice" for their benefit.

I didn't intend to imply that most of my knowledge is other than heresay. I oppose heresay being used as fact. When used, as it often is on BGP, it should be identified as such. I also didn't imply that Sutton orchestrated the activities at Greenup County. He certainly isn't in a position to do that. I merely said that, from reliable sources (actually not heresay if they are repeating what the principal characters told them directly or what was actually stated in their presence; otherwise, it is heresay), I understand that Sutton has been a "player" in the drama and that he has knowingly damaged Hicks.

I would not expect Hicks to sacrifice his future merely to bring "peace" to Greenup County. First of all, his future as a coach is directly on the line. Second, Greenup County has never had any peace and it isn't likely to start now. Hicks needs to do whatever he can to protect his rights because it is a sure bet that, if he doesn't, no one else will and he will be crucified by the Greenup County hierarchy.

I do think that he now has representation superior to that of the Greenup group. I guess we'll see how this marathon plays out.

I really have no dog in this fight. My interest is in full disclosure and justice. I have no idea as to where the facts will lead. However, from reading the local newspaper and BGP, I do know the present direction of the train.

Scooter, you may not be saying that Sutton orchestrated the activities at Greenup County, but it sounds like you believe he is using the events for his own benefit. This is a VERY fine line that you are playing with.

You say that Hicks should not be unfairly judged by anything other than the facts. Unfortunatley, you don't seem to judge Sutton by the same criteria.
