Sutton is the coach, Hicks is gone for a number of reasons......Play basketball and evaluate the situation at the end of the year. As far as the administration at GC, I know they would not have made any decisions during the year unless they were warranted. Let it go and focus on the current situation. Support the kids and hope they advance during tourney time. Remember, wins and losses mean nothing come district time. All the record books are cleared and the team that wants it the most wins. End of story.

First of all, let me say that I am close to this situation and very aware of what is going on. I do not speak of hearsay of gossip.

Anyone who knows anything about basketball knows that teams are made in practice from October until the start of the season. Coach Hicks had his team playing really well with a 4-1 record. Coach Hicks took the team through the developmental stages of the year and did well. Since his absence Sutton and Smith have lead the team to a record of 500. Anyone can warm a seat on the bench. It takes a true coach to work day in and day out. Now lets look at Coach Sutton's Freshman team that he worked with himself and practice during these developmental months and they only won ONE game this year. Knowing the situation, Sutton always said that there was no talent and the team wasn't any good. For this reason he cancelled practices regularly. Again knowing this situation and having followed GCHS basketball for years I can say that Coach Hicks teams have always been hardnosed and tough. They have always been in better condition than their opponents and fought until the end. Since his absence the kids are out of shape. They tug at their shorts and double over to their knees during the second half of the game. Coach Sutton obviously does not know how to develop a team.

Name the teams Hicks beat to be 4-1.

Green OH, Fleming, Fairland OH, and East.

Plus one trip to region in four years at one of the biggest schools in the region. BTW the only school with two middle school feeder systems.

This all is an awful situation. From all I have heard though things are just a big mess up there. If what Slick says is true about cancelling practice, etc then things arent going to get any better for the Greenup bball team. And as for criticizing the players for not playing hard and dogging it, who can blame the kids with the way the grownups are acting up there.

Well, when you have two coaches for three teams equals not enough personnel to go around. Three boys teams, three girls teams and GC cheerleaders need more gym space. I believe only freshmen boys BB practice was cancelled. I would lay the burden on GC admin. to appoint interim Freshman BB coach. It didn't help when Tony Tharp decided to set in the bleachers instead of the GC bench when Hicks got suspended. But Tharp was trying to make a point and show his support. Which is his business. GC needs more facilities, one gym and one baseball field is not enough.

The two middle school system is a big part of the problem. When the schools were purposed to be opened they were named Greenup County East (Wurtland) and Greenup County West (McKell). But, then magically those names were literally removed from the schools (I remember seeing the names posted at the Wurtland location on a sign) and the county was once again split with the old animosity from the days of having three independent schools. As far as making it to the Region once in four years, one must understand that when Hicks arrived the program was near the bottom. The previous regime before Hicks seemed to believe that the talent at the school was never ending and seemingly fell out of trees. As I've said before under Ward GC was a program and to have that you have to cultivate the talent, not just expect it to show up. No matter your opinion I think that Hicks was on the verge of bringing the program back to one of the better programs in the 16th Region. Much like his predecessor, I believe that at first he was of the philosophy that the talent would just flood in, but it took a couple of seasons for him to learn differently. The truth is there has always been jealousy in and of the basketball program at GC, it is unfortunate that the many years that one man (Ward) put into a program is no closer to being a contender than it was after he left. As far as who he beat to be 4-1, it's just as hard to judge what his record would be as of now as it is to say the current coach could do just the same.

I just talked to a parent of a Clay Panther(which is where Ward is now) He said about 75 percent of the Basketball Parents says "We can have him back!" LOL:D

I actually like it better when there was about eight or nine elementary schools in the GC system. More kids got to play at the different locations.

You know, it's hard to believe that Sutton could be THAT bad of a coach. Hicks has been out of the saddle for about a month, and all of a sudden, these athletes that were in topnotch condition are doubled over gasping for air?

 

The only way that is possible is if Sutton is force feeding them Twinkies for the entire length of a two hour practice everday.

Yes the talent that Cooksey had in his first year was good enough to win the Region, much less just make it to Morehead. He had the player of the year in the Region (Lawson), one of the best big men (Porter), and some quality guards. As far as 6'11" the only one that tall was a once in a lifetime All-American Mike Scott. Yes there are many talented kids in a bigger school like GC, but let me tell you something there were many kids that Ward took a chance on that others like Cooksey did pass up. Just because you have all this talent doesn't mean it coaches itself and that's the bottom-line. All 20 freshmen gives you is just more parental problems as far as I'm concerned. I would much rather have a quality 10 or so. I know you would agree Jay that having that many kids down the road only leads to problems when they are upperclassmen.

It is a stretch to say Cokksey's first team could have won the region.

Ward's last team with Sutton and Griffith were a lot better and they did not win the region.

Not to mention one of the premier players this area has had in a while (Cam Thoroughman) would've been a Musketeer. Imagine having him in Green, Gold and Black and I guarantee you would've seen at least a couple of Region Title numbers added to the rafters at "The Greenhouse." It's amazing those many people who was his detractors when he was there many of them tell me they wished he would never been let go. Not to mention as well a top notch coach in Tim Fraley (current Rose Hill Coach) would've been the head coach at GC as his heir apparent. Well no since in wishing for those days there long gone and with it goes the respect that so many put their blood, sweat, and tears into.

GC should be fine for the next five years for talent. If GC coaching staff can bring them together as a team. Not let see "how many points I made this game".

Cam could have still played for Greenup. He made the choice.
