Come on, rltrace, an Ashlander has already used the usual public "trump card" of bringing up the dastardly "P Word" (Private). Now you make it even more intolerable for them by bringing up another "P" school. Aren't you ashamed?

When a coach comes into a season with a team that is picked tops in the area, he has a lot of people seeking to chop him and his team down. Being the top pick is one matter. Meeting expectations is quite another. Russell was favored and Russell has, to date, delivered. Dodd deserves much of the credit.

Yes. The Rose Hill 7th grade team won what is considered to be the state championship in a tournament involving almost 40 schools from around the state. The tournament was held in Lexington. This team won its conference tournament today at Morehead by defeating Ashland (Verity) 53-31. The starters played only the first half and led at halftime 38-12. They finished their 7th grade season at 32-0. The accomplishment doesn't guarantee a big high school run but it does create optimism what with 9th graders Euton and Jackson and 8th grader Malloy all three of whom already start for the varsity.

Rose Hill is a year away. Whatever they accomplish this year is extra gravy. After watching their 7th grade dispose of both Verity's 7th grade and Verity's 8th grade (3 times each this year) makes me believe that, when they arrive, they will likely "visit" a while. I didn't leave out part of my post. Rose Hill's 7th grade team is also its 8th grade team.

It is unfortunate that Rose Hill will not have a game with Bellevue today. Both the girls and the boys need a game to help prepare for the tournaments. It didn't work out. I understand that the starting times would have had to be moved up considerably because of a church event at Rose Hill anyway. It would have been difficult for Bellevue to make it for a possible 11:00 am starting time for the first game. Conflicting events happen and cancellations happen. Some smaller schools seem to schedule Rose Hill with the anticipation that Rose Hill will be weak. As Fastbreak stated, Rose Hill has usually been rather weak through the years. When they find out that the Royals have some talent, as they do this year and probably for the next six or seven years or so, those smaller schools have second thoughts and look for a way out. I would suggest that Rose Hill, for the foreseeable future, not schedule any of these applicable smaller schools or, if scheduled, to include a hefty cancellation fine in the game contract. Actually, this is probably a moot point since Rose Hill should, in the coming years, have no trouble scheduling games against top competition. Although far too high a price was paid (in my opinion), there will be, as mentioned above, two games each year with the other district teams. As for COY, I'll vote for Tim Fraley- particularly if he grows a ponytail.

You opened Pandora's Box. Just revise your post to say that Ashland has the best cheering section of any public high school located in Ashland between Berry Street and Floyd Street on Blazer Blvd. That will keep you out of trouble and will also fill the need to be the best at something. You have a vocal cheering section. Enjoy it for what is is and don't insist that it is the best. You cannot prove your statement but you can definitely prove my suggested wording.

Good to see a little spirited "debate" between the Russell and Ashland contingents. When you guys play "kissie butt", you guys are neither interesting nor honest. The atmosphere at the game was full of electricity. It was truly a pleasure to be there. Both student sections were good and seemed to be reasonably controlled. I watched Coach Sparks and, I believe, Principal Howard patrol and hawkeye the Russell group the entire game. They did a good job as "enforcers". I didn't see anyone monitoring the Ashland group but didn't see any real problems. If anyone had any doubts, they should have been settled. Jonathan VanHoose was clearly the dominent player on the floor. He was a coach on the floor, scored, rebounded, and played good defense. When he posted up a couple of times on McDavid, it was no contest. Onetoya offered an olive branch of sorts in his first post but has since shown those true maroon colors and the branch has been burned. Ashlanders continue to live in the distant past and, if that new steel mill is not built pretty quickly, the future looks less than promising for them. If it cannot be said that Russell is dominent in the region, at least we can say that they are dominent against Ashland, don't you think?

With the recent success of Bath County, I would think that their coach is deserving of some consideration. And, after all, how many boys's coaches in this part of the world have a ponytail? But, then, very few of them have enough hair left for a ponytail.:thumb:

I suspect that only one of the top three can and will beat one of the top three. It won't be a good year for Cinderellas. The draw will be important.

Of course it is about the coaches, Ms. Liberty. If you will reread the posts you will learn that someone stated that Fraley had coached Rose Hill to an undefeated season at home. Then, someone stated that that was no big deal because Rose Hill had not beaten a team with a winning record at home. This was followed with the reference to spin with the reference to the size of the schools that Rose Hill has beaten at home. Are you caught up now?

Ah, Dawgdays, it is all a matter of spin. While you are correct, it can also be said that every school that Rose Hill has beaten this year (with the possible exception of Piarist) is much larger than is Rose Hill. It all depends on the side you support.

I doubt your idea will resolve the surfacing question concerning gender inequities. Personally, I like the Daily Independent and I really don't disagree with its general policy in sports coverage of having female sports take a back seat because the fact is that the overwhelming interest in sports is in male teams and male participants. However, the trends in the law and in society (call it political correctness if you choose) are clearly in the direction of equality. Since "separate but equal" was stricken down in Brown, I don't think having a male oriented newspaper and a female oriented newspaper will do the job. While I'm on my "equality soapbox", I'd like to mention the really ridiculous and degrading state of nicknames forced on female teams. Lady Red Devils, Lady Royals, Lady Vikings, Lady Musketeers, Lady Lions, Lady Generals, Lady Ramblers, Lady Fighting Irish, Lady Wildcats, and on and on. Of course, Ashland's girls are called the "Kittens". Does anyone think that is any better? Our old firiend, Wireman, used to insinuate that, from time to time, other posters were "stirring the soup". Well, that is exactly what I am doing and I am doing so in an attempt to have others think about all of this and to respond- hopefully in a mature manner. After all, BGP is for discussion as well as whining and name-calling. By the way, I am an overly and overtly conservative Republican so don't think this is from a wild-eyed leftwinger.

I don't think anyone intended to discount the publicity given to anyone else and this is particularly true in regard to VanHoose. Jonathan has earned any accolades which may come his way. He is undoubtedly the POY for this region and for this area. No one is close. He has earned a fine D-1 scholarship and that is a rarity around here. I think that most were suggesting that Queen deserved a little better coverage than she has received locally. For example, the coverage of her signing with Middle Tennessee, the coverage given to Laura Terry when she signed with Louisville, or the coverage given to Jessica Fortman when she signed with Buffalo didn't remotely approached the coverage given to a local who recently signed with Georgetown College. I would hate to think that the reason is because the three D-1 signees are female and the small college signee is a male. That would be troublesome, don't you think?

Patterson didn't act like he wanted the ball particularly when it got tight. He sure got rid of that last rebound in a hurry. He sure wasn't looking for a shot. Overall, he was pretty much a nonentity on both ends of the court. Mayo, on the other hand, carried HHS. Even his "dissenters" had to be impressed by his performance tonight.

Well, I was really pleased when I saw the title of the thread. However, when I saw some of the names on the list and counted 42 nominees from Kentucky, the euphoria ceased. It looked like a typical list of Kentucky Colonel applicants. Very inclusive. Jonathan is deserving of the nomination. However, the abundance of others, I would think, lessens his chances. Too bad.
