As was thoroughly complained about before, does it really matter? I mean we all know the true regional championship will be played in the other semi final match up.Don't even know why there is a thread on this one.

Why the whining and groaning about the draws? Is a regional runner up any different than regional semi finalist? You’re going to have to beat the team at some point, or you’re afraid your team is going to lose. In 2000 my NewCath Breds faced the Colonels of Covcath in the first round of the regionals. CovCath has handed NCC their lunch in the regular season. We as fans were nervous and unsure. The players were confident and the Breds won. Then they had to face Conner in the semis who was a top five regional team. Conner missed a free throw at the end that would’ve sent it to OT. NewCath handled Holmes in the finals although a player for Holmes hit a half court shot at the buzzer before half. Point being this poor gripe could be made in every regional tourney AND state tourney since the start of the whole thing 100 years ago. Get over it brotha

Was at the game and had zero dog in the fight. I started out leaning towards Newport but NewCath never gave sent it into OT. I thought Newport’s coach needed to be the cool head instead of freaking out on every call and at his players. Once NewCath started their come back the body language of Newport’s players changed quickly which I believe led to the game going into OT. You get 5 fouls so if you get called for one no big deal. I agree on the no call at the end. Player tried to go through 3 defenders and from where I was at (on the NewCath side of the stands) it appeared to go of the NewCath player. NewCaths lack of rebounding is why they lost. Got absolutely dominated on the boards. Anyone know how many second chance points Newport had? Awesome game and awesome atmosphere. Newport brought way more than I thought and NewCath had the large following per usual. Everything you’d want in a playoff game.

Haven't been to a bball game all year. Was going to go the NewCath v Highlands last night but I would've been late even if there were tickets available. Anyone know if Highlands will be selling pre-sale or will we have to get there early and wait in line like the old days? not wanting to stand in the rain, but my son has been wanting to see a game.

I have to agree. Besides the adults being able to puff out their chest and saying "told you we can play with anyone", why do this. The HC knows more about the talent level he has than anyone. Even if he had Trinity talent at a 1A school, why would you play up? It's not your fault the class you fall into, it's the population shifts throughout the state. Makes zero sense. How many teams are currently scheduled to play up? Why is Highlands an exception to where if they play in the class they are supposed to it's looked down upon?

I love football. I wasnt allowed to play until 6th grade, not bc of injury worries but bc the way my older brother was treated by the local youth coach when he was a 3rd grader (a little more hands on than my parents wanted). I got my butt whipped as a 6th grader and then as a freshman and sophomore. I didnt give up, I actually worked as hard as I physically could in the weight room, ran as hard as I could in conditioning and practiced as hard as I could during the week just to be able to get on special teams. I had more stingers than would be allowable today, but I just assumed it was just a hard hit. My parents never once discouraged us from playing football (mid-late 90's), and were very involved in giving advice and relating hard work to the real world. I love football so much that I became a football official. I see all kinds of stuff, broken bones, sprained ankles, tore up knees, but a very minute (?) amount of hits that I would consider concussion causing. My son is currently nine years old, he as a kindergartner asked to play, no push by me or mom. He was to small for tackle but we found a local flag league. He did three years of that, then in the summer following second grade he asked us (again not us asking him) if he could play tackle. Mom was concerned even though she came from a big time football family as well as myself. We discussed it, I told her myself and three brothers, her two brothers and her 3 uncles all played through high school. We are all very functional human beings ranging from 27-59 years of age. My biggest gripe is the media stating the obvious, concussions do occur and need to be tracked. But failing to stress that the percentages of concussions vs any other injury. Yes banging skulls cant be good, but how many people who played football only up until high school have had a life altering head injury? The problem lies with the NFL intentionally hiding the fact that their players were coming back to soon or even coming back after taking a serious blow and not giving them the truth.

Floor looks awesome. The basketball at the free throw line was extremely tacky. I agree to make the color of the Thorougbreds, on the baseline, yellow. Also sweet mural. Also we must also kiss the ring of the diocese which we can all agree is an absolute joke.

I haven't been in at least 5 years. My dad and uncle went for years up until last year, and it was just bc they didnt feel like going. They'd get seperate rooms but sit next to each other and go to almost every game. Myself and brothers started going on Fridays and Saturdays after we got into high school. In the 12 years I went, I made one championship game and almost all semi's. Come Friday and Saturday night it's just more fun to sit back with the boy, indulge in some drinks and NCAA tourney. I agree with the program. I'm 35 but am old school. I love reading about the schools, where they are from, how many regionals they have, state tournament record etc. Also when the 8th player on the team has a break out game you can thumb through and find his name.

Someone got their “feathers” ruffled Oscar!!! I tend to agree, if ego is the only reason to play up, why play up if you’re not winning? Play in the class you’re assigned unless it is truly a financial reason not to. Side question: When was the first year our dear Birds played up? And when was the option first presented by the KHSAA?

With all the running clocks this past season, you’d think the potential starter for this upcoming season saw some serious varsity reps, correct?

That would be a nightmare for NewCath in all forms except on the field. A district game that’s further than 30 minutes isn’t going to bring many Breds fans outside of family and die hards. Certainly not making a regular season district game to Paintsville considering almost all teams make the playoffs any way. For Raceland I could see it as a win-win bc they are in the middle and will benefit. Paintsville I feel would be the same as NewCath. If the playoffs weren’t as watered down as they were and the district games actually meant something I could see these games being meaningful but as it stands it’s a money loser for all involced

So are there any names being seriously considered yet? I know they are a 6A school but to the naked slightly untrained eye, it seemed the roster numbers didnt reflect that. How does a new coach A) get more boys out of the hallway and onto the grid iron? B) Take what he has/is realistically only ever going to get and turn them into something more than Lickert could? To me it seems a number of jobs will be able to retain the coach for a serious amount time and never get past point B, when that coach is a loyal alum or for some reason just absolutely loves the school he has come to coach at. Kind of like Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern. Good luck

I didn't say it was. Touchy touchy. It is clear as day that Trinity is in another stratosphere than the rest of the state on the football field. But since the 2000's have rolled around its been all T with some Male mixed in. As a sports fan I appreciate dynasties as much as the next guy. I just asked a simple question wasn't blaming anyone.

Question of curiosity (as most questions are). Why would he leave what appears to be a highly successful run at Highlands for the same role at Newport?

That no matter what 6A will be Trinity winning and everyone else playing for runner-up. Honest question for Trinity folks, how excited do you really get with the relative ease in which Trinity takes care of in state buisness? Are you more happy when they win or relieved they didn't lose to a lesser opponent?

How have they always had the easier path? Up until the 6A era they had to (and many times failed) get past Beechwood. Then in the finals they saw Danville 3 out of four times and Mayfield once. Then after the 6A era started they have had a tough go after initial success.

Agree that at least they went pretty far outside the box. Never in a million years would I have guessed Lickert would be NewCaths coach. His name never even came across my radar. Thinking, like a lot of us, he’s teaching at a public school and tenured has the retirement perk. Now if he can stay a teacher at CC while coaching at NCC then he hit a home run. Like said before he and the CC program have probably taken each other as far as they can. Good luck
