I believe they have run more spread passing game in the past, but the triple option fit their current personnel better and they have done a super job with it. Their DC, Ed Long, is an old Mercer Co. boy. He married Brad Matherly’s sister. Brad was an excellent QB @ Harrodsburg High… and my neighbor growing up. Caden Long is Ed’s son… KCD QB & a 4th & 40 QB. I would not get real hung up on what a coach runs on offense. The good ones adjust to their personnel / tweak their offense to fit the guys they have.

Bathiany & Sphire are both excellent football coaches. Have known Bob since late 80s. Bert played on the Highlands team that got us in the snow, 2003. We became friends when he recruited for Lindsey Wilson. Chuck and I had both guys on the podcast. As expected, both were impressive. There is nothing wrong w/ high standards. Both programs have set the bar high. Both programs have strong leaders. The Bluebirds & Big Moe will win on a big scale, again.

Most of the time, elite coaches are wired different. I know incredible football coaches that wanted to interview for jobs that the admin would not touch. When they would tell me those stories, it blew my mind. Those guys are not always easy to have around. And, no one, no coach is perfect. Wish the Bluebirds & Coach Sphire... together or apart... the very best going forward.

Do or Die? No. Bob is an excellent football coach and has had a career that 99.5% of the guys that get into coaching would dream of achieving and experiencing. Even if he is not the HFC at Highlands next year, life will go on and he will have an incredible career to celebrate. Or, a really smart school and administration will dig up a bunch of money and he will get a great job because he is an elite football coach.

Usually it will be spring , one year in advance. It would be spring of 2026 for this next one.

Districts change now every two years. Some times, they change alot. Maybe I should have thought about that more, but I never gave it alot of thought when taking a job. I was always taking a job for the long haul and had the mindset that we have to focus on us being the best we can be. The one class that is different is 6A. There is no other animal in KY HS Football like St. X & Trinity. You have to take that into consideration if going to a 6A school.

I remember when Pat Dale left Danville HS to go to Montgomery Co (early 70s). Mount Sterling HS was crazy good, pre-merger. From the outside looking in, was going to be a perennial power house. Always liked the school, community, etc. But, it has been tough.

Did you ever think about retiring late in the spring to make it more likely that one of your assistants would get the job? Hope you don't mind me asking. Always wanted to help my bosses move forward, but, hindsight, might not have been bad to drag things out to help one of my guys. Just curious what you and thought and believe the BGPreps crowd would enjoy this question.

Congrats to Doug on a long and successful coaching career! We crossed paths in 1988 when I went to Paris and he was helping John Nochta at Bourbon County. I will miss these old guys... and Doug is younger than me.

Here is a BGPreps memory.... can't remember what year. But, I was the coach at Mason. The Montgomery job was open. Stephanie and I saw no one on campus other than the AD we met with to discuss the job. Sure enough....it shows up here... "David Buchanan was at Montgomery Co. HS, the Friday after Thanksgiving." @theguru has eyes, everywhere! Lol

I am trying to get Yogi to come be a Bearcat. He was at Pikeville with Chris McNamee. Chris is very high on him.

Guys - I am lowly HS coach. But, I have come to the conclusion... (at least for now because I change my mind often) ... the best way to build a program is quality continuity. I have come to believe that some programs don't reach their potential or elite status because the leadership gets bored with the grind and the hard work/commitment required to be great. I can handle things are hard and we have a big mountain to climb. Nothing wrong with that. But, everyone must be committed to seeing it through and a willingness to do the tough, tedious work that is required. For some, it may even be boring at times. For me, I love the grind so am good to go. So...to answer the question..... I believe Louisville's best path to greatness is Coach Brohm working with their administration to build an elite program for an extended period of time. He is a good football coach and he cares about U of L Football. I think the same is true for Coach Stoop's and Kentucky. if the leadership & staff can walk through the door everyday with their hair on fire, and do so for an extended period of time, greatness can be achieved. Our culture likes quick fixes, splash hires and to be entertained. That can apply to administrators, fans, coaches, and players. None of the three are a replacement for consistent, quality hard work done by good, skilled people.

It was senior day. We are very proud of Trosper. He started in the Recruiting Office as a freshman. Last season he signaled the plays. This year, they have added him as a student assistant on the offensive staff, working with the OC and Receivers Coach. He is still signaling the plays as well. It has been a great learning experience and we are all thankful for the opportunity he has had to work for UK Football. Congratulations CATS! IMG_4960 2.HEIC

In the current environment, it will take longer to build a program than in the past, unless there is an influx of transfers. If the job is open, finding an excellent young coach that wants to build a program and be there 20 plus years is what I would look for. Continuity is the best shot a school has to close the large gap between the have nots and the haves. Look for a young coach with a young family. I am a big Brian Weinrich fan. Excellent football coach and a fine man. He was a great resource for me when I was at Mason County. Certainly wish him the best if he has decided to move on.

One school, they had them all thrown in a pile... I guess headed to the dumpster. Grabbed the ones I wanted. I like how the Bluebirds are doing this. But, not surprised. Judge Waddell. Homer Rice. Their influence and how they operated continues to impact the entire school system.
