Coach McKee and I have been good friends for a long time. I sure wish they would quit running that "boring sweep" as well... especially when we play them in a few weeks. The way he runs the Wing-T, their execution...ELITE. You are correct on..."the ninth time....wide open." I would argue that no one can get receivers open better than Scott County's offense. I realize this is counter intuitive... but their offense is a dream scenario for a QB. A defense must strain hard to defend the run game, which is a huge bonus for the passing game.

Our listener question this week is from Dave Burnworth. He says attendance at HS games is down due to ticket prices and online streaming. Do you guys agree? Are you seeing a drop in attendance?

Jonathan Thomas was an EXCELLENT hire to replace me. The record does not indicate that, but he was. A combination of some things outside of his control made that a tough stretch. But, his work certainly held the program together during a tough time in regards to results and contributed to the good times to follow. He was offered the Transportation Director job at the district level because he is an exceptional leader. He made the right decision for his family... big pay raise that will change his retirement, dramatically. Great move for his family and their future. 1998, we are at West Carter. 1-8. We are losing. West blocks our FG attempt. A Comet DB scoops it and is headed to the endzone. Our big OT, #54, is huffing & puffing, everything he has got, to catch him. He dives and barely tackles him to prevent a TD. AFTER that play, we went 55-12, won two region titles, first in school history. Hard to believe now, but October 0f 1999 was the first time Mason County was ever ranked in the Top Ten of the AP Poll. Big #54...JONATHAN THOMAS. Good luck to the Royals tonight. In memory of Tom Duncan, I will say, "Word out of Flemingsburg is they are going to run the ball on you and you can't stop them." I would get so torn up. Finally realized he was just making that up. Good grief... wonderful days and wonderful people. Will always love the Royals.

Congratulations to Coach Stonebraker, his players & staff on the super job they have done turning around the Admirals. Can’t believe 56 years after my 1st Danville game, get to face the undefeated Admirals @ Bob Ware Field. Thankful to be an old football coach ! James 1:17

I was just glad to make sure I wasn't one of the two guys that got fired. I will get back to work on the Admirals.

It was a really good night for us. Proud of our guys. It has been tough and we're not out of the woods yet. We had some growing pains this morning, but that can be expected. Nothing like a heavy dose of up downs on a Labor Day morning. ? Thank you!

How does your school handle Labor Day practice? In HS, Coach French would roll in, pulling his boat about 6:45 pm and we practiced at 7 pm. For Coach Gruneisen, he gave the staff the day off on Sunday. We came in Monday morning for staff meetings. Practice was that afternoon. What we are doing now, we have the staff meeting Sunday as always, but practice is Labor Day, 8 am - 11 am. That gives the kids and coaches the rest of the day off to do cookouts and family events. I also like the extra recovery time from a Monday practice. A couple times over the years, we took Labor Day off. Tuesday was rough, but by Friday we were fine and maybe a little fresher. We had 100% attendance this morning. Practice had some rough spots, but overall was a very productive day. Happy Labor Day!

In the early Boyle years, my Dad's teams would play Washington Co. week 2 and Anderson Co. week 3. Good tough games. August of 2022, I was a football coach w/o a team. Had a one legged (injured knee) freshman QB meet me on a 100 degree day to get in some QB work. Not sure which of us was in worse shape. That QB will be across the sideline from me tomorrow night, JonTate Smith. Very proud of him. Does a super job getting the ball to guys who can run. Our guys had one of the best ever Thursday practices we have had before a first game, going back 33 years. I think they really wanted to do a good job. This is a conscientious group. Of course we have had some tough moments, but the overall direction continues to be a good one. Mind blowing stat for me... we have 78 guys right now. Most I have ever had before was the last two years at Mercer, when we hit 70. The only guys we have allowed to come out are transfers/new kids in school that had no way to be there earlier. Very encouraging. Hoping I can see Charlie Cox, Lee Glasscock and Jimmy Reed tomorrow night. We may tell an old story or two. If it were June of 1981, would be looking for Suzy Nally. But, that is a story for another day. ?

11 years ago at Mason County for week 1, we were forced to go with the back up QB because our starter had some health issues. Monday was a rough day. I had to go to his house after practice to calm him down. Weather forced us to come back on Saturday to finish the game. Our back up/starter for game 1 QB led us down the field for the game winning TD, late in the 4th. That QB's name was Bradley Boone. Friday Night will he his first game as a head coach when he leads the Royals. Best wishes to old #19 and his team!

Centenary Methodist Church (Danville) was packed today for Tailgate Sunday. Both the Boyle & Danville teams were present. Know who went to Tailgate Sunday just a few years ago? Bullitt East HFC, Keegan Kendrick!

At Paris, Mason & Mercer... we did a travel bag that stayed with the program. Nicer than these, but we had to keep up with them, track them, wash/clean, inventory, etc. In the early 80's at Mercer, we got something much smaller, but similar each season in our spirit pack. I like this way much better. Pass them out one time. Done. No inventory or storage. And, the kids and families are really glad to get them. Costs a little more, but the convenience and appreciation make it worth doing. And, some of these guys will be 50 years old and this is where they will throw their laundry, or carry stuff to travel, and threaten family members if they lose them or destroy them. Lol . Their significance and meaning will be at a different level. Not for all of them, but for some of them. Maybe the best part, will help them remember old stories from HS football. They will tell those stories, over and over again. And, each time they will tell them, they will remember themselves a little faster, bigger, better and more successful. How can you pass all of that up? ?

You would fit in very well in the red and navy. I guarantee it.

Great place for HS football. Bermuda grass. No track. Old school bleachers. Students, crowd right on top of the playing field. Our parents mark the game field & practice field for the football program. Volunteers. Not a big deal to most people, but huge deal to me. Our guys got these travel bags today. Theirs to keep when they graduate. They were genuinely grateful and excited to receive them. Didn't see a shred of entitlement or taking anything for granted. Our guys earned these by working hard and showing up. Didn't cost them a dime. Our generous community allows us to do things like this for our kids. Nothing extravagant. But meaningful in an old school culture where we appreciate what we have, appreciate others, and appreciate what others do to help us. We still have much work to do and we know that. But, pieces like our beautiful field, earning what we have, appreciating others... they add up. And, over time, will lead to improvement, lead to success, lead to winning and results.
