I have only watched her play once and even though her scoring stats were unimpressive that game, I don't know that I saw her make a mistake all night. Was double teamed and got the ball to the open person every time. If she was selfish she could probably put up 30+ a night. Instead she gets everyone involved.

And when the overall favorite gets beat by the 16th best team at Rupp, they get a Mulligan and get to play that game again. That seems fair in this new scenario. Currently every team has the same opportunity to make the Sweet 16. You don't show up one night, you get beat and go home.

So Draud shot 50% on the night and scored 28 points and now he’s a selfish player and the coaches aren’t in control? I have no skin in the game but I can’t stand folks beating on him and the coaches (or other players and coaches for that matter). This is ridiculous. From some quick research, it looks like he took a little over 17 shots a game last year and is taking a little over 19 a game this year. Not a drastic increase considering they lost a few valuable pieces from a top 3 team in the region last year. If he hits his normal free throw percentage in this game, Beechwood wins and we are talking about how he took over the game and what a great player he is. Let the kid play. I’m sure nobody wants success more than him. Last thing he needs is to see this stuff.

I can see your point. Hicks led 5A in passing yardage and is probably the one guy that Conner couldn't win without. I think I would give the edge to someone that has his hands on every offensive play. Again, taking nothing away from Mayer, but I think Cov Cath probably wins every game except LaSalle and Lex Cath without him. Maybe one of those instances where they could have been co-players of the year.

I said this to a bunch of folks last night but the unsung hero for NCC might have been Justin Schneider on the botched punt attempt by New Cath late in the game. It was 4th and 3 on NCC's own 17 yard line. Kremer couldn't corral the snap and then rolled out and threw a prayer that was caught by a diving Schneider for a potential first down. They threw a flag for illegal man (a bunch of them) down field which was the correct call. However, that made Beechwood accept the penalty which allowed NC to punt again to the 44 yard line with no return. NCC held them on that possession and force a Beechwood punt. If that pass isn't caught, Beechwood declines the penalty and gets the ball 1st and 10 at NCC's 17 yard line. It's a play that won't show up in any stat sheet but could have saved the game for NCC.

Great Job! When I saw Dayton over the summer I was impressed by the staff. It’s not easy to turn programs around with numbers dwindling like they have been, but these schools are doing a great job!

Doesn't matter in the Semi-Finals. They are seeded 1-4, no east and west.

Here's what the KHSAA site says: "For postseason competition, in Class 6A, *For playoff bracketing only, the 5th place team in District 1 (Apollo, Daviess County, Henderson County, Marshall County, McCracken County) would become the 4th place team in District 5 (Ballard, Eastern, Trinity (Louisville))." Saw them yesterday at 7 on 7 with NCC, Conner and Newport. I have to say that I was impressed with their numbers and the coaching staff. Kids seemed dedicated and coaches seemed into it. They might not have won every series but they competed hard. Hope it goes well and those boys can have a great High School football experience.

I think CAL moved to 3A along with DeSales.

On a little lighter side on this topic: I have to give the Newport Central Catholic students some props for this one. Last night at the Highlands game after a call that went against NCC the students all started chanting "We Want Chappy", referring to an older 9th region official that wasn't at the game. The officials on the floor got a pretty good chuckle out of it.

They could have called more! Physical game. Someone mentioned how physical it has become over in the Highlands/Cov Cath thread. High School basketball is getting to look more like football. Thought the refs kept this one in hand but still missed some or were just tired of blowing the whistle.

The one that gets me is when all the fans yell for the QB to "Throw the ball away!" However, in high school there is no throwing the ball away unless you are clearly trying to get it to a receiver. When Intentional Grounding is called I still hear people screaming "he was out of the tackle box". Now there are times when QBs still hold on to it to long but they just can't "throw it away" like many fans think.

Paul Wiggins at Bishop Brossart has done an amazing job bringing that program back from the verge of collapse.

Anderson looked pretty good right from the start against Highlands. Kept running guys deep and Highlands couldn't stop them. Anderson QB was on target on the deep balls. Highlands did get a few scores against them but couldn't keep up with the scoring that Anderson was getting. NCC looked good against Anderson. Moved the ball well in the short to intermediate game and had a few deep balls that connected. Anderson didn't get the vertical game going against NCC and the Anderson QB didn't look as good on the medium routes as he did on the deep balls. I don't know if Anderson was just working on different parts of their playbook against NCC or if NCC was really taking the deep stuff away and forcing them to throw underneath. Someone asked earlier how Cramer looked. I thought he looked a little rusty. Wouldn't say bad my any means but looked exactly as you would expect from a QB in his first 7 on 7, that played baseball in the spring and just got back on the field after hernia surgery (per an earlier post). His arm looked strong and once he gets the reps in, he'll be fine. I thought it looked like all the teams had positives they can gain confidence from but plenty of things that they can improve on.
