That quote is from the KHSAA handbook, NOT a rule book. Sounds like it may be up to the home management/officials to decide what to do. I've heard of bands being sent out of the stands, I've heard of 15 yd unsportsmanlike penalties, I've heard of schools being fined. Someone more knowledgeable than me may have a better answer, but what I posted above is STRAIGHT from the KHSAA...nothing else added to it.

This is straight from the "Football Playing Rules" (pg. 24) of the KHSAA Handbook. Same playing rules are in place all season, including at WKU for the Championship: J) Band or other school Provided Music During Live Ball 1) The band is not to play or cheers be given when the ball is alive by rule. 2) Persons subject to the rules, including bands, shall not create any noise that prohibits a team from hearing its signals. Drums, cymbals, bells and mechanical noisemakers shall not be used to assist cheering. So basically, the way I read it, as long as the team can hear the signals, its all good. Now...my $0.02: it's part of the game. Much like in college, if you can't hear the signals or plays you can appeal to the ref (in college, the quarterback goes to the white hat, and POLITELY asks him to nix the noise. It's up to the white hat to honor it or not), but ultimately it's up to the official to determine if it's a problem or not.

I'm very surprised this hasn't elicited more discussion. 1) Bardstown may not the the "Bardstown of old," but they did just hold rival Nelson County, with a potent offense, to ZERO points last week! 2)the Tigers ALWAYS have athletes which makes this 2-1 team is still dangerous. 3) E-town is 4-0 and in the top 10, but after last week's nail-biter with North Hardin and the opening of district slate next week, I have to agree with the article in the Etown paper today: this has the making of a potential upset. 4) I'm still not sold on E-town. Yes, they will win their district I believe, but the combined record of their opponents so far this season is 3-13. Marion and West Jess are still searching for a win, North Hardin is 1-3 and North Oldham is 2-2. This is one game I'm keeping my eye on in the Hardin-LaRue-Meade area.

Plain and simple the second and third round playoff games will be FUN and RAUCOUS for sure in this region, but there could be some interesting first round games as well. In District 1 Caldwell and PT should be #1 and #2 and hosting, but after Hart WILL NOT be a pushover 3 seed for sure from what I've heard this season. I'm interested to see how they match-up with Etown and Adair. Vice versa, Etown and Adair are locks as 1 and 2 in that district, but keep in mind Union, Trigg, or even Ft. Campbell will be rolling into town for a first round game for those teams. It would not shock me one bit to see upsets in the 2 vs. 3 games in this region.

As much as I'd love to see my Hawks pull out this one, I think Adair pulls out this one comfortably. 42-14 Adair is what is Alumni Night and home opener for the Hawks.

Don't put a lot of stock into the scrimmage. After talking with a few folks I trust with football knowledge it sounds more like Nelson's size up front overwhelmed a smaller LaRue team who is trying to adapt to a new system. With that said, I do truly hope Nelson has a better season that last year. This first game will be a true test of their ability as Marion is more of a match for the Cards. If Nelson can contain Marion's speed AND move the ball consistently, they stand a good chance in this one. Marion has a new coach and while from what I've heard he is doing some of the same things Coach Robbins did, there is ALWAYS some adjustment to a new coach and philosophy. I'm going with a Marion County win, but a tight one that comes down to the wire. 35-31 Knights.

Having watched DeSales last weekend at Meade...I'm going with a DeSales run-away. Not many 2A teams have the depth of DeSales which bodes well for them in this match-up with a bigger classification team. 42-10 DeSales.

This is THE match-up state wide for this weekend. While I agree with most that South wins this one, it will be a good game. Former LaRue head coach Josh Jaggers has reportedly taken over the Bulldog defense. Jaggers knows defense. I give South the edge in a tight game, 24-21. The thing is...like a few have pointed out this could be a match-up that occurs again during the post season. Game 1 (this weekend) goes to the Spartans. If a rematch should occur in the post season, I'm giving the Dawgs the edge.

I can answer why West Hardin and East Hardin didn't play: they are in the same conference. The entire point of many of those teams going to the Bowls they do is to see someone OTHER than their regular conference opponents. Could the bowl director have done a better job of matching teams up? Possibly. But keep in mind, each season teams change. From what I heard (was at another set of games this past weekend), LaRue's 8th grade team got beat by Grayson County (while I hope that isn't right, the source was rather trustworthy)...something that let me tell you WILL NOT HAPPEN USUALLY. You can try your best to match teams up by experience and ability, but the method will NEVER be more than 60% accurate unless you get really really lucky.

From what I hear, August 7-8 Campbellsville U will be hosting a middle school football jamboree on their turf field. I can't seem to find anything to confirm this. Does anyone know for sure? Any list of teams/match-ups that will potentially happen over that weekend? I know that's opening weekend for most middle schools up in the 5th Region area.

Been a while since I've posted, mainly because I enjoy reading the banter more than being part of it, but I do have a thought on this: it all depends on WHOSE field it is. My senior year we had to go to Monroe County (2008). I'm not sure if they have changed the set-up since then, but we dressed in what was quite literally a concrete bunker. A "building" that was simply 4-walls of concrete and a barn door. It messed with us so much, we never focused, which was painfully obvious when all the starters could say during teh game was "Coach, can we NOT go back to the locker room at half-time?!" I can also tell you that Meade County is an intimidating atmosphere. The host Wave literally walks DOWN into the stadium (which is one of the tallest metal bleacher set-ups I've seen in a long time) from their locker room in the gym basement. The field is also incredibly tight to the point kids are often standing 2-3 deep yet still cover the entire sideline depth wise. I always hated visiting schools like Meade, Marion County (visiting team dresses in the gym and walks what feels like a mile to the field where the student section sits literally in the endzone), the Bullitt County Schools (used to be INCREDIBLY hostile environments for visiting teams. Haven't been back to a game in years up there), and Washington County (dress in the gym at the top of the hill. During close games I've seen the student section there walk down to the field, administration close behind, and stand in the endzone the opposing team was going towards. Made for a loud area to try to score in). John Hardin used to be a REALLY freaky place to play when the host team walked out, arm in arm wearing all black and ran towards the visiting team from the endzone as their entrance before the game. Certain schools/teams have atmospheres, which include locker room set-up, bleacher proximity to the field, student section placement, etc. which are tough to focus and win in. Others, it's just a typical Friday night.

Let me preface this by saying I love coach Jaggers and what he means to the program at LaRue...but this issue goes A LOT deeper than most understand. Josh interviewed for a few openings last season WITHOUT TELLING ANYONE and upset many people for doing that including a few of his assistants. I'm not saying what Josh did was right, I'm not saying what the administration (read: Superintendent) did was right...what I'm saying is that there is a lot more to this situation than many people are either willing to admit, or know. Anytime a coach is forced out of a program it is bound to give many people a bad taste in their mouths. As an alumnus of LC, I wish both coach Jaggers, who gave me many life lesson when I was in High School there and he coached AND the entire program the very best...I have no doubt both will bounce back and do great things.

I'm gonna take a stab at all 6 classes. 1A: Hazard out of the East. after Lynn Camp in round 1, they will more than likely host a speedy and dangerous Campbellsville team. Win that, you get Williamsburg for the Regional titile. Win and you'll likely face Raceland for the right to play the freight train that is Mayfield. 2A: Whoever comes out of the West! you have Caldwell, OCath and Murray all vying for a spot in the Semi State. Win and you'll get either CAL, DeSales or Glasgow. Winner of this semi-state has be the favorite, but more than likely Walton-Verona or NewCath will be waiting them. 3A: E-town by far has a tough road, but honestly anyone out of that Region does. Central, Bell, E-town, Corbin, Wayne, and Henry County all have a legit shot to come out of Region 2. Winner will likely get winner of South Warren and PT. Win that and you're in BG playing Belfry or upset winner Garrard Co/Russell. This may be a weak class strength wise, but find a more balanced class this season. 4A: I'm going with Boyle. Russell County may be down but still dangerous. Second round will likely be Knox Central, but Dudley Hilton has done an AMAZING job in a few short weeks with Taylor and anyone who gets this team has to be aware of their potential to pull the upset. Regional finals will be a rematch with LexCath. Semi-State is Highlands, finals will be Owensboro or Franklin-Simpson. 5A: going with John Hardin here. First round is a rematch at Bullitt East which could go either way. Win and you get a rematch with Grayson County which went down to the wire recently. Win, and you'll get a DANGEROUS Bullitt Central team with explosive potential. Thanksgiving weekend is the annual game with Bowling Green. State finals could easily be the winner of Pulaski and Southwestern, either one who is EXTREMELY dangerous. 6A: Meade County or Central Hardin. Meade (likely gets) Henry Clay, Scott County, Central Hardin/Bryan Station, Male/Trinity before a date with Simon Kenton or Dixie Heights in the finals. Central Hardin has to go through PLD, Bryan Station, Scott County/Meade, Male/Trinity before a date with Simon Kenton or Dixie. The ENTIRE top half is STACKED this season, but can't deny Region 2 has a tough road no matter how you slice it.

KHSAA website is reporting this was called in the 4th quarter??? There a reason?

I usually don't reply to things like this in any shape, form or fashion. But as an official in wrestling for 6 years now (including 2 middle school state championships and 2 KHSAA regional tournaments) and football for 2 years now, as well as an NAIA Wrestling official I think my view point may help some of you understand what an official thinks. Firstly I can only speak for myself. With that said, I don't mind a coach asking me what I saw, provided he isn't throwing a "Bobby Knight" tantrum doing it. As some have said, be respectful. Don't question my/an official's judgement. In wrestling, it is AUTOMATICALLY a misconduct penalty and in football I try to remind the coach it's discouraged and in some cases unsportsmanlike. Officials are human. period. We are going to make mistakes. I had a coach one year come up to me at the Middle School State tournament when I wasn't an "on the mat" official and ask me why I wasn't on the mat because as he said "You may not be the perfect official but I can live with you since you are not only able to understand the sport but you admit when you make a mistake, which to me isn't that often from what I see." Basically: BE RESPECTFUL AND MAKE SURE YOU AREN'T THROWING A FIT. Secondly, pick and choose your battles. A coach who questions EVERY SINGLE CLOSE CALL gets on an official's last nerve. I can name multiple coaches who if they ever questioned me I would be willing to listen because the only time they do question me as an official is when they either didn't see the call in question, had a different view, or honestly I blew it. Vice-Versa, I can name multiple coaches who I have a hard time listening to because they question every single close call. They may be right but honestly, I have a hard time listening because they're questioning me every other call. Even i they are respectful. Finally, and to me personally this is a HUGE thing. A coach who has no control over their athletes isn't likely to get many close calls. There was an incident I remember not too long ago where a kid looked AT A TEAMMATE and told him something I'm not even going to spend time re-typing. I had to inform the coach exactly what was said and his response was "I don't condone that type of behavior, but I'm not their parents so I can't do anything about it." In high school if I had said ANYTHING disrespectful my coaches would have jerked me out of the game and suspended me for a few events. Coaches who have control over their athletes and make them represent their school AND their team with respect have a little more leeway honestly. The key to working over an official: treat the official like YOU would want to be treated in the same situation. I know it sounds simple, but honestly it goes a LOOOOOOOONG way.
