I'd love to see Somerset win tonight. Defense is still a little suspect, but if they show up it could happen.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong but here's my two cents. Beechwood was more than 4 TDs better last year than the score indicated. That being said, Somerset has closed the gap but the margin remains to be seen. Somerset has some work to do defensively as evidenced last night. The second half effort was much better but they cant let the game slip by until the second half defensively (or offensively) against any team but especially a team like Beechwood. I like Somerset's chances to pull out an upset with a home crowd, but that's a long ride in front of them Friday to a place its not easy to win for many teams. 28-13 type score is my best guess but any given Friday....

Having watched Southwestern and Pulaski play this year, I would say Southwestern is way under ranked and Pulaski a little over ranked. At the very least their rankings on this list should be flipped.

Good news to hear that the team is healthy. Better news to hear the line has stepped up to the challenge of pushing themselves to get bigger stronger. Potentially this team has a chance for greatness.

After taking in a 7 on 7 I can see that the passing game will be ok if the QB gets time. I haven't seen a depth chart but if #10 is the kid from Southwestern, then he's gonna be nice IF the line can give him time. I haven't seen the line in action yet but if they can do the job the offense will have some weapons. Doan sat out which worries me about health. I'd like to see that kid just be healthy for a season of play. Defensive secondary will be ok. Still have to see them line up to stop the run. Once they pad up in week 1, you'll know a lot about this team. I'm sticking with 6-4 as the regular season record but the devil will be in the details. Got the talent, but can they put it all together?

My best assessment is that iHeart Media just absorbed more than they can handle too quickly buying up so many radio stations as to have a strong arm on the control. Penny wise and pound foolish as my granddad used to say. They spent poorly and invested poorly and caught up with them. Had to lay off a ton of workforce. A lot of webcasting seems to be the wave of the near future. If you can stream to your mobile device and play over a Bluetooth speaker, you'll be okay! For those who relied solely on a radio, it's a big loss. Local radio is going away and it saddens me.

I post this trying not to sound like a "Debbie Downer" so please excuse me. This year is a prove it to me year. There is talent to be had but discipline is what is needed. Not just discipline for any off field incidents (which happen a lot of places) but also mental discipline , the kids getting their minds back into the game and start excelling after a couple of tough years (record wise). If I could get someone to tell me this team has bonded and close, that will be a really nice thing to hear. There hasn't seemed to be a closeness the last couple years and I think it is needed. I have a kid coming up in the ranks and will be suiting up for Meece in the next year or two as he is going into 5th grade. I want these kids to succeed more than you know.

Hard to predict how good Male will be 90 years from now.

Comparing what goes on here and what goes on in Texas is apples and oranges. Largest high schools in KY are in the Lexington area with a few topping 2,000 in the enrollment. In Texas, there are 15 schools with 4,000+. I've seen Somerset pretty full for local games and when the Ray Correll bowl was here with Southwestern and Pulaski. All 3 schools in this county wont equal some of the enrollment in 1 school in Texas. The video board I am sure was paid for by booster dollars and it will pay for itself in the long run with ads and such. But let's say it's tax dollars...I bet there is a nice amount of tax revenue for local townships when games this size are hosted. As for me, zero issues with this. I

There has been some talent in McCreary in the youth leagues. Much like Casey County. I don't know if it translates well for them once they get to middle school or not. I hear Ford is close with Singleton at Somerset. He going too?

I just lost 30 minutes off my life reading this. The whole public/private/independent thing just makes me want to roll my eyes.

This is an area I'm so 50/50 on. I'd love to see a Mayfield vs Bowling Green matchup but I get why it probably wouldn't happen. Hurts the bigger school to lose to the smaller one or vice versa, hard to match the potential depth of a larger squad that could run a smaller team ragged.

Have to give them maybe a high C or very low B. That roster will never be more complete and their run over three years seems so dominate, until you pour into the records of the teams they faced. I can't take much away from them and every school would want that kind of three year run. But... Jeffersonville finished 6-5 for the season Russell County 0-11 Rockcastle County 5-7 Madison Southern 5-6 Henry Clay 7-5 Lincoln County 3-9 Southwestern 8-4 Bourbon Co. 4-7 Letcher County Central 4-7 Had to play well to beat a good Highlands and a good North laurel squad. Yes, Bourbon and Rockcastle were both nice teams but the Henry Clay win doesn't really impress me when you look at their wins which came against teams that weren't that good. Bowling Green and Scott County weren't bad losses but I wonder if those losses really explain where they actually are when it comes to being anything higher than the grade I think they deserve? I don't know. I'll admit, even with the grade I think I would give, they were still a lot of fun to watch and the successes they had, you cant ignore.

I figured Danville would be a home game. I thought they played up there last year? Having LCA and Hazard at home helps but still a toss up. Unless Beechwood lost a ton, that game you play for pride. Not saying it cant be won, but it'd be tough. Rockcastle was close last year. At their place wont make it much easier. They could very well be 8-2 or 5-5. It'll all be according to how much better line play is vs. last year and if they can replace Hatcher with someone who can beat you with the arm. They'll be a dangerous team, especially in the playoffs.

I am sure I am alone here, but I think that the extra day is too much and drags out the tournament. I might even go as far to say that Rupp isn't the best place. to hold them.

Youth has definitely been a factor over the last couple of years. This year I fear it's as much inexperience at QB and worry if that defense has matured enough to make noise. Do they have depth along the key positions? I'll not 2nd guess Robbie Lucas on too many things. He knew a couple years ago this group could be special. Let's see if it pans out.

Same here, Bac. I suppose most people are holding their comments until time to post about 5A football? That said I can't give you too much grief about the list. The title goes through the Mayfield squad. The rest of this list is accurate. However, even as a Somerset guy I can't put them top ten. maybe right outside of it, but they have to show something this year. A couple of losses last year to teams like Hazard, LCA and Leslie County with small margins give a glimmer of hope. But, the wins they had last year weren't especially spectacular either so I can't get too excited. Maybe one of the Jumper faithful can give me some heads up?

I'm looking to get some contact information for Boyle County to see about trying to get on their schedule. Anyone know a contact? I'll even ask for contacts in Russell County, Wayne County and Lincoln if by chance a reader to this has it. It's a shot in the dark, but I'm willing to try it.

In my opinion, the head coaches at the high school and middle school should be involved on the "PR" side first. These coaches should be aware of the talent on the field but just as important, they should be out meeting parents and making acquaintances. The parents are going to be your help/boosters/support system and they need to feel like they are part and belong. No reason they shouldn't spend a little time doing that as time permits. But most importantly, they should have a working knowledge of how the league is functioning and how the coaches are doing to prepare the kids for the next level. Here in Somerset, if your kid goes to one of the county schools, they play for a very large league but they do things well. Most of the kids at the independent school at Somerset play for a different league which is good if you don't mind the travel. Too bad the schools here can't put aside differences and just play each other, but that's a whole other thread that if I start, it'd be a battle.

Youth is both the strength and weakness on this team. If they can get one win in the district tourney, it'd be a good thing for this team. If you can keep the pieces of this squad together over the next couple years, they are going to make some noise. Add this sophomore class with that nice 7th grade squad, I see a good run for the next few years.

I'm never a huge fan of comparisons when you have a huge generational gap. Larry Bird would've loved to have some of the athleticism of today's players and the Williams kid (or anyone fore that matter) would love to have Bird's skill set. I got to see Rex Chapman in high school as well and he was that kind of kid that you knew he was going to be a superstar. The Williams kid is really good, but once you put him in college with players as good or better, he's gonna get a rude awakening.
