I am thinking no. Even if it is someone like Pikeville or Mayfield I still think no.

 

A quality 6A team should wipe out any 1A or 2A team 9 out of 10 years.

It's a no, unless you're talking the top tier teams, like Mayfield or Desales and that crowd.

 

But, even then, instead of being a straight up no, it's a maybe.

 

I'd actually say the same thing for a 6A team playing a 3A team. Unless you're playing a Central, Belfry, Boyle and the like, don't do it.

 

The numbers and talent pool are so vastly different, and the depth and quality of depth are a completely different level.

On paper, probably not. But there are other things that have to be considered when scheduling. Travel costs/time, availability (teams have to share an open date!!), local rivalries, the proximity of other 6a schools in the area, and the relative quality of the program's all come into play. It's not as cut and dried as many make it out to be.

Besides the point. Boone may be getting better (let's hope) and BW may be young and inexperienced but the point stands. Class size in and of itself should not be the determining factor for a schedule.

I think there should be rules when you schedule. You can break some of the rules using some if/then statements but as a rule good 6A teams have no business playing small schools.

I know this post is about "good" 6A teams, but I can think of several 6A teams with low numbers & lack of talent pool even with a huge enrollment that year in and year out would have their hands full with probably the upper half of 1A,2A,3A,etc.

A "bad" 6A team really isn't any different than any other team, really. They might have a few more numbers, but that's from a big pool of students. They probably have a lower participation percentage. I'd take anyone in the top 5 or 10 in 1A and 2A against the bottom 5 or so, of 6A. And I'd take the top half of 3A against the same teams.

If the alternative is a long trip and you have a Mayfield available then yes, a good team should schedule them. Not Trinity or Male good but anyone outside the top 3 or 4 would get a decent game.

It is pretty obvious that this thread is geared toward we know who. Not in the too distant past, said 6A school struggled with the likes of Bellevue, Dayton and Newport. I can see where they would be required to play Scott and Dixie which leaves 8 games. They then schedule all 6A teams in the area which I believe gives them 5 more games. Thus you have 2 or 3 open dates in which to pick opponents. That is where it can become a little hairy in putting together open dates that match with what some may deem quality opponents. I see no real reason to schedule downstate teams when you can play Highlands, CovCath and perhaps someone from across the river.

To me, it's more about roster size, than school size, when it comes to the 1A's and the 2A's. Having kids go both ways is draining, no matter how talented they are. It may be a draw thru the first 2 or even 3 quarters, but by the time you reach the 4th quarter, there's usually going to be an advantage to the fresher guy.

 

So, like Clyde, I'll never say never. But there's really got to be some certain boxes checked off before I'd say it was a good idea. The problem, I think, is that sometimes it's hard to truly anticipate what your rival is going to be like.
