McCracken, a top 10 6A school, has played Mayfield all three years of its existence and all three games have been close. Since the schools are about 15-20 miles apart (and a couple of other 5A's in the area apparently won't schedule McCracken), proximity has a lot to do with it. And kudos to Mayfield for being up to the challenge.

 

Now if McCracken played Fulton City or Fulton County, it would be one thing, but there is absolutely no shame in playing Mayfield.

None of the others are making claims of top tier status, or acting like they are title contenders. A contender should be ready for the best of 6A and those small schools just don't get you there.

This is kinda like Michigan and Appalachian State , two top teams but separate divisions. Most of the time the Michigans win but every once in a while they can get beat.

Got no idea of what small schools you are referring to. I see only one. SK opened season against 2A CAL which is a traditionally solid program with close coaching relationships. After a solid victory against CAL they had 12 weeks to prepare for playoffs and recover from this arguably one weaker opponent. Got beat by state runner-up Lafayette. Don't think the SK trashing is deserved and cannot find fault with opening the season with a quality 2A program that should work the rough spots out, while building momentum with a win.

I doubt Pep was referring to the specific number of small schools SK faces and was instead making a general statement. Like if a person owns an SUV and a friend says 'yeah, those cars are real gas guzzlers'. The friend isn't saying that the person owns multiple cars; he's just making a broad observation.

 

From what I've been told CAL was a last-minute replacement after another team dropped out so I don't have a problem with SK playing them in this instance. Otherwise, I would find fault with scheduling a 2A team when you consider yourself a 6A title contender. Especially when that victory is bragged about later.

If it was DeSales or Mayfield I would give them some credit but as it is CAL chokes when it matters most so I am not sure how much credence I would give that victory.

Most of the premier programs chose a solid, overmatched school to work out the kinks, see who performs under game pressure, and get ready for murders row. Problem with that is that you still have quality football in the SEC and the like. NKY 6A doesn't fit that bill.

The only problem with this logic is that NKY 6A would be more akin to CUSA or SunBelt rather then big time D1 programs. SK has made their records gaudy over the years by playing small schools. Until they step up and actually win games consistently against like sized schools they will always be looked at as sketchy at best and grossly over rated at worst.

I agree that sometimes there is no choice and McCracken is a good example. Isn't McCracken traveling to Louisville for a scrimmage

Trust me if Trinity out scores McCracken in the scrimmage I won't be on here acting like they just won the Super Bowl. Also kind of made me wonder if they are willing to travel 4 hours for a scrimmage why not try to work something out for the regular season.
