Did Radio Station drop your team for this season?

Featured Replies

Trying to get a clear feel for what has happened here locally, but it seems as if all of the local I-Heart stations that in the past have covered Southwestern, Pulaski and Somerset Football, Basketball, Baseball and Softball have decided to get out of the sports broadcasting business.

Just wondering if this has happened in other communities across the state? If not for a few of the local radio guys talking about it on Facebook no one around here would have even known the games weren't going to be on this fall. One local owned station has come one board to broadcast Somerset games using the same crew as the past years, but for now Pulaski and Southwestern have no local radio coverage.

There are a few ardent fans with an expertise in broadcasting, that are working to get the games covered on-line...hopefully that works out.

So has this happened in any other communities? If your games are broadcast on I-Heart stations, you might need to double check.

I may be off on a few facts, I've asked someone with more knowledge than me to post on here about what exactly is going on.

I'm trying to find out exactly what happened here locally. Local stations let many long time employees and on air personalities go earlier this year...and now this decision.

Also Ashland has been with a iheart channel b97.1 fm for a long time. As far as I know both b97.1 fm(Ashland football and basketball games) and 107.1 fm(Russell football and basketball games) will broadcast this season.

Hopefully you will be able to listen to your games.

There is no radio coverage in NKY. A handful of schools have their own webcast.

My team will be on the radio, a local owned station picked them up. Pulaski and Southwestern will be streamed only.

Seems like IHeart managers in this area didn't want Sports on their FM stations. They control 6 local FM stations and at least 1 AM station that I know of.

I loved the few seasons Steve Jarnicki did the play by play for my Neers.

I'm old school. It was a big darn deal to have Dale McMillan call your name on WHKK.

My best assessment is that iHeart Media just absorbed more than they can handle too quickly buying up so many radio stations as to have a strong arm on the control. Penny wise and pound foolish as my granddad used to say. They spent poorly and invested poorly and caught up with them. Had to lay off a ton of workforce.

A lot of webcasting seems to be the wave of the near future. If you can stream to your mobile device and play over a Bluetooth speaker, you'll be okay! For those who relied solely on a radio, it's a big loss.

Local radio is going away and it saddens me.

Great Post Cowboy!

As this is exactly what happened in BG although there is still I believe a game of the week of 1 local team on a radio station down in the BG area. But it is all online now. Sad to see this go away. :(

I used to love the ICN 6 game of the week. They did a great job.

Iheart Lake Cumberland made the decision a few months back to make major changes and, unfortunately, local sports was one of the changes. They did away with the Sports Director position that was held by Josh McKinney, leaving him without a job. They also let go of the other local sports announcers that were on as contractors. With the void being left by iHeart, locally owned Somerset 106 has picked up Somerset High School Football for the 2016 season. With the help of some of the guys left out of work, http://mvpsportschannel.com has picked up Pulaski County and Southwestern High School Football games. The site will carry audio of the games online, as well as stories, interviews and podcasts throughout the season. It's a grass-roots effort with a bunch of guy who have been around the local sports scene for over 20 years. There are some familiar names from around the Pulaski County area such as Paul Wright, Mike Kerr, Dewayne Clark, Gary Phelps, Brian Abner and Jeff Wix involved in the venture. It does appear the local radio stations we grew up with are disappearing at an alarming rate, with online streaming being future of the business. We hope to be able to cover the local schools as much as possible.

Kudos to this crew for doing what they are doing out of their love of local sports!
