I've did my research and put my opinion on a top 10 for the pre season.

 

1 Mayfield- 4 time champs in a row. 3 year starter at QB and one of the best running backs in the class and defense is Mayfields strong point

 

2 Desales- They return two big time rushers with over 1500 yards together. No QB returns but only need one good enough to keep defenses honest.

 

3 CAL-Just can't get over the hump in the playoffs over Desales. Return some good backs and good QB and solid recievers

 

4 NCC- Lost some talented seniors but return a great QB and several good juniors class men.

 

5 LCA-Very talent class with excellent talent. Tough running back returning with basically all the skill positions back and my reason for giving them the nod over Danville.

 

6 Danville- Solid talent returning but lost some good seniors off last years team. Younger guys will need to step up.

 

7 Butler County- Return a lot of skill players both ways and could be very dangerous playoff time.

 

8 Glasgow- Just like Butler County they return the house after only losing 3 seniors from last years team.

 

9 Somerset- Return some great talent and all the skill positions except a QB but the back played good in the playoffs and also heard they have a transfer from Southwestern so watch out for the Bunnies.

 

10 Owensboro Cath- Lost lots of talent but still good enough to crack the top 10 with tradition.

 

Several teams are worthy to be in the top 10. By far the best competitive class next year.

This may be one of the more versatile teams Mayfield has had recently, new guys coming up give Mayfield the option to run some things they haven't run before and to give the Mayfield starters an in game rest without losing any ground. Possibly better than last year? As good anyway. Looking forward to it.

That said I can't give you too much grief about the list. The title goes through the Mayfield squad. The rest of this list is accurate. However, even as a Somerset guy I can't put them top ten. maybe right outside of it, but they have to show something this year.

 

A couple of losses last year to teams like Hazard, LCA and Leslie County with small margins give a glimmer of hope. But, the wins they had last year weren't especially spectacular either so I can't get too excited.

They were the only team in the district to play with Danville for 3 quarters and hold them far under their season average and (to be real honest) should've beaten Hazard on the road save a Hail Mary and couldn't tackle at LCA but (excreted a yellowish bodily fluid out of their urinary track since I was flagged for a language violation) both games away. Get those two wins they should've had and they're a respectable 8-2 last season and wouldn't have had to go on the road to Leslie.

 

They'll be better, how much so TBD but they'll be better. Hatchers escapability and play making ability will be missed but outside of him the exiting seniors only had a couple of good players (Red Smallwood was one but after an injury in the Danville game the jumpers had to figure out how to play without him and did ok).

2A will be fun to watch this year. Somerset deserves to be top 10 with who they have returning.

 

2A west has about 5 or 6 teams that could make it. I am keeping my eye on 2 teams that could spring surprises come playoff time and that's Butler County and Glasgow.

Watch out for the ADs. It looks like coach Clevenger has the Danville program back on track.

I'm not sure how much experience they have coming back,but they will have three year starting QB Zack Dampier.

They also return there leading reciever as well. But the loss of a 1000 yard rusher will hurt as the next closes is in the hundred yard range. The coach has the program heading in the right direction.

Colt you return some good playmakers. I am assuming you want to run more than pass and all you got to do is add a QB who will throw about 15 times a game to keep those defenses from loading the box.

Youth has definitely been a factor over the last couple of years. This year I fear it's as much inexperience at QB and worry if that defense has matured enough to make noise. Do they have depth along the key positions?

 

I'll not 2nd guess Robbie Lucas on too many things. He knew a couple years ago this group could be special. Let's see if it pans out.

1. - Mayfield, potential to be one of the Cards better teams. Potential to be better at almost every position except kicker and punter. Return RB Trajon Bright who in my opinion is a Mr. Football candidate. Return a better line and a 3 year starter at QB who is quietly become one of the best at QB ever at MF as he has started to threaten MF records held by the Guhy family of QB's. The Cards will return the best crop of LB's in the programs history to anchor a excellent defense.

2. - CAL, love the QB, and the Wright kid. Have a lineman that was a all district who's dad was a great lineman at MF. In my opinion, the best threat to repulse the Barbarians push from the Western wilderness.

3. - Danville, return top QB, WR and have started to return the Ads to glory of bygone days.

4. - NCC, 2A's brides maid return a good QB and always have enough else where to be runner ups.

5. - DeSales, the former Roman Empire of 2A were oh so close to notching their 3rd title in a row had it not been for the Barbarians from the West showing up at their door. A hard call to make as to how well the Romans rebound. The key last year was the QB who is gone. As a good many Colts on this site would quickly tell you, the key was numbers and despite the fall of the Empire, the Colts still have the numbers but their offense last year was really dependent on a huge O line and the departed QB. The rise of the Centurion youth will be a huge challenge to advance out of their region and only time will tell if they can again just plug the holes.

6. - OC, have a frosh QB that many there think could be one of their best ever and that says a lot. Should be very good on O but will need the D to again be good if they are to compete. I think they will be surprisingly good.

7. - King Rex, I meant Butler Co led by QB Rex Henderson. The boy wonder will again put the team on his back and carry them as far as he can.

8. - Somerset, the swamp bunnies return a ton.

9. - LCA - return a lot but I know very little of them. I would love to see my Cards get a crack at them for a title as I am still butt hurt over the brutal beat down the Cards took at their hands back in 2009.

You may get your shot at LCA. They will be very good. Danville returns some good playmakers but I just think LCA returns more. The team in the west I think that will be over looked is Glasgow. I look for them to make a deep run. They were in every game last year except 1 and they return nearly everyone.

I think 2016 is going to be a great year in 2A and I think all 4 regions will be competitive.

They lose a big one in John Mark Boarman at LB, but their whole DL, the other 2 LB's Nick Blair and Bailey McKay are back and both OLB's and 2 DB's return. IF their Soph QB keeps getting better then Catholic will have to tools to win again. Their only problem is everyone's problem in the state..... MAYFIELD!
