What a crazy ending... Two goals were scored 30 seconds apart in stoppage time of the second half, and Jenna Wolfe’s ended up being the game winner. Senior outside midfielder Lauren Nemeroff figured in all of her team’s goals, as she netted a pair and set up two others as Dixie Heights edged Simon Kenton, 4-3 on Wednesday. Most importantly, she set up Wolfe’s game winner with a minute left in extra time. The Colonels led, 3-2 at the end of regulation, but in stoppage time, the Pioneers tied it when sophomore Mallory Valentine converted a penalty kick assessed after a hand ball. Just 30 seconds later, Nemeroff fed Wolfe on a break, and Wolfe fired the winning shot into the bottom right portion of the net. Junior center midfielder Madi Critcher added a pair of assists for Dixie Heights. Nemeroff has five goals and five assists in two games this season. HALFTIME: 2-2. GOALS: DH—Nemeroff 2, Sims, Wolfe. What is it with Boone coming back from or blowing multi-goal leads? I remember they came back from a couple down multiple times last year. Here is WCPO.com's write-up: Dixie Heights erased a four-goal deficit in the second half, tying it on a late goal by senior midfielder Wynn Feltner to salvage a 4-4 tie vs. Boone County on Tuesday. Colonels junior striker Andres Rivera sent a pass through traffic to Feltner, who rolled a shot into the corner of the net to tie it with a minute left in regulation. Feltner finished with two goals and an assist, and Rivera scored once and picked up the helper on the final goal. The Rebels led by two at halftime and netted two more goals early in the second half four before Dixie Heights began its comeback with 25 minutes left in regulation. HALFTIME: Boone County, 2-0. Gesenhues, who also assisted on Highlands’ first goal, fired his shot from 25 yards out into the right side of the net. Down 6, Highlands rallies past Notre Dame Bluebirds win first-ever regional final By John Lachmann [email protected] Twitter: @rednblackhawks HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – A team that has prided itself on solid defense and excellent pitching control completely imploded in those areas the first half inning. Then after falling behind by six runs in that frame, Highlands battled back and held on for an 8-7 win over Notre Dame in the Region 9 final at NKU that ended in truly bizarre fashion. Adding further to the storyline: This was the Bluebirds’ first-ever regional championship. “Talking about the game, I mean, holy cow,” Highlands coach Rob Coffey said. “We started with complete nerves taking us over. We have played unbelievable defense, Bailey has pitched unbelievably and we just lost it for half of an inning there. Couldn’t get an out, couldn’t get a big play, just could not get anything to fall our way. We told them when they came in after that inning that they haven’t even batted yet and that we can’t worry about what they do and we need to focus on getting nine runs. Our goal was to finish the game with nine runs, if we win the game, we win the game, if we don’t, we fought back. And they took that to heart and just chipped away.” The start of the game was a complete disaster for Highlands. The Bluebirds issued two walks, four wild pitches, had a passed ball, a fielding error and a misplayed bunt all before recording the second out. Pandas senior left fielder Amanda Meagher plated the fourth and fifth runs of the inning with a single through the right side and a wild pitch rounded out the scoring. “(Pitcher) Bailey (Spencer)’s location and pitching has been unbelievable from the three years I’ve been coaching,” Coffey said. “To see her throw balls against the fence like that, I knew something was up and it’s very hard to watch.” Down 6-0 before facing one pitch against the two-time defending regional champions was obviously not the way Highlands drew up the game plan. But junior third baseman Whitney Quillen belted a pitch into the right center field gap for a triple to lead off the bottom of the first. One batter later, she came home on a single up the middle by sophomore catcher Shelby Graybill. “I can’t tell you how big Whitney Quillen has been when we’ve been challenged,” Coffey said. “She’s done that all year…every triple that she’s probably had this season has been leading off a game after we came in and having a bad inning. And that right there took us from having the wind completely out of our sails to putting us back on the ocean. I told them if we come in here and go 1-2-3, we might be packing it in because (Notre Dame) was rolling. Whitney didn’t let that happen.” Senior left fielder Kendall Turner singled, and a fielding error scored a courtesy runner one out later to make it 6-2 at the end of the inning that was inspired by Quillen. “She’s crazy – she’s everywhere,” sophomore shortstop Haley Coffey said. “She’s up with the attitude, so the dugout is up, the hitting is phenomenal and the fielding is phenomenal, she always brings us up.” Now trailing by four instead of six, Spencer settled down in the circle. She retired the Pandas in order in the second and pitched around a single and a walk in the third. In the bottom of third, Highlands loaded the bases with one out on a single, a hit batsman and an error. Sophomore first baseman Brennah Dutcher scored one with an RBI infield single, and seventh-grade second baseman Rachel Gabbard followed by hammering a two-strike pitch to the left field fence, plating two and making it 6-5. “We’re talking about a seventh-grader that has the poise of a senior,” Rob Coffey said. “She has been a blessing to our entire program, as a seventh-grader to be able to step in and fill some shoes that we needed filled, honestly, it’s been an unbelievable roller coaster ride the entire season and she’s been one of those key players that has risen to the occasion. She’s a seventh-grader, I can’t believe it.” A booted ground ball on the infield pushed across the tying run and it was a new ballgame heading into the fourth. Spencer continued to hold the potent Notre Dame offense in check. In innings 2 through 6, she allowed just three hits and one walk. “We had a couple of times we had runners in scoring position and we didn’t come up with any more clutch hits,” Notre Dame coach Joe Stephenson said. “We started chasing the ball a little bit – (Spencer) was moving it out a little further – because we were hitting it early when she was coming in there.” Most importantly, Spencer did not surrender any more runs in that span. “We knew we could field it, we just needed to get her to throw some strikes and settle down,” Rob Coffey said. “I knew she would, it was just a question of whether or not we would catch them at the time.” Pandas junior right-hander Haylee Smith issued her first walk of the night to seventh-grader Haley Coffey start the bottom of the sixth with the score still tied at six, and the rest of game was truly anomalous. Junior right fielder Payton Leighty laid down an excellent bunt right in front of the plate, but the throw went to second anyway. The runner was safe, and the ball tricked away from the fielder. The lead runner took off for third and was gunned down easily for the first out. Quillen followed by hitting into a force play for the second out, and it appeared Notre Dame would escape harm. But Smith unleashed a wild pitch and uncharacteristically walked two more hitters to load the bases. Next up was Turner, whose plate appearance was the most controversial of the game. She worked a deep count and took an inside pitch that sounded like it made contact with the bat. The umpires huddled and ruled the pitch had hit Turner, pushing across the go-ahead run. Not surprisingly, the coaches saw the play unfold differently. “From my point of view, the sound sounded like the bat, but where it hit looked like it hit her,” Rob Coffey said. “So when I checked her – I know the Notre Dame fans aren’t going to want to hear it – but when I checked her she had (a mark) across her wrist. It was the same spot she had gotten hit at earlier in the season and once I saw it I believed that it probably hit her. You know what? Honestly, I hate winning on that because it’s a shame. For anybody to have to lose that game, we should both be able to go on. I’m happy we won but I feel horrible for them.” Said Stephenson: “(The umpire) said it was too high up on the arm. It was underneath her batting glove – I don’t know how they missed it. Even when she got to first base she took her batting glove off to look at it. It was unfortunate – they just missed it.” Senior center fielder Ashley Grosser followed with a looping single to right that made it 8-6. But the runner at third was held and the runner at second was halfway between second and third before realizing it, and the Pandas were finally able to record that elusive third out. Notre Dame would not go away that easily. Seniors first baseman Maria Schaefer and left fielder Amanda Meagher drew walks sandwiched between a 4-6 force out. A routine fly to right reduced the Pandas’ season to one final out. But the craziness was not over. The runners took off, and rather than addressing the runner at first, the throw went to third, where the runner was safe on a close play. But more importantly it allowed the paramount tying runner to move into scoring position. That would end up being highly consequential, because on the eighth pitch of her at-bat, senior center fielder Kelsey Michael lined a double down the right field line. The runner on third trotted home, but the potential tying runner missed third base badly, stopped halfway to the plate and retreated to third. A pop-up behind first finally put an end to the madness with that critical tying run still on third. “Coming into the regional finals and you’re down six, it’s all about attitude at that point,” Haley Coffey said. “It’s not even about the game anymore – everyone has to have the right attitude or we’re done. And that’s what we did. We came out and we hit the ball, we got two runs on the board, but I think our attitude was phenomenal the rest of the game.” Highlands’ pilgrimage to the state tournament next week opens at 7 p.m. on June 5 at WKU. The Bluebirds will face Estill County in the first round. “I can tell you I’ve never been more excited in my life,” Quillen said. “We fought so hard for that win and we had to give everything that we had down to the last out to get this win.” NOTRE DAME 600-000-1—7 8 3 HIGHLANDS 204-002-X—8 7 2 WP: Spencer. WCPO story and link: Scott rallies again to win Region 10 title Eagles erase 3-run first-inning deficit By John Lachmann [email protected] Twitter: @rednblackhawks CYNTHIANA, Ky. – Scott wiggled out of some tight spots in its regional semifinal, but in the championship the Eagles took their ability to escape jams to an extreme. The Eagles stranded 12 Bourbon County baserunners, including 10 in scoring position, to hold off the Colonels, 8-4 in the Region 10 title game at Harrison County on Wednesday. “We’ve been playing like this for two or three weeks now,” coach Jeff Trame said. “To beat Harrison County last night on their home field gave us a lot of confidence…our guys just keep gutting it out. It was the first regional championship since 1988 for the Eagles, who will make their first-ever appearance in the state tournament next week. The last time they won regionals the state had a sub-sectional format, so only the top four teams advanced to state. The Colonels entered the contest allowing just 1.4 runs per game and had surrendered more than four just once – with seven-run total coming in a tournament in Tennessee vs. an out-of-state opponent. So it was not looking good early for Scott when, after sophomore right-hander C.J. Seay walked the first two batters of the game while pitching in a light rain, senior shortstop Devin Bellville jacked a three-run homer over the center field fence. But in similar fashion to the semifinal, the Eagles clawed their way back into the game. Senior shortstop Reed Spata led off the bottom of the first with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on an infield error to make it 3-1. Bourbon County threatened in the second with a single, a walk and a pair of wild pitches but came up empty. The Colonels again failed to score in the third despite a double, a walk and a single. Scott squelched a suicide squeeze play, as the lead runner was tagged out at the plate after the missed bunt, and a groundout to second ended the inning. The Eagles capitalized on the missed opportunities. With two out and no one on in the bottom of the third, Spata walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Senior third baseman Nick Brinkman singled up the middle, scoring Spata. Senior center fielder Josh Castleman followed with a walk, and senior catcher Blake Gay crushed a double to the right field fence to score two, giving Scott a 4-3 lead. “When Blake got the big hit, you could see the tide was turning,” Trame said. “That’s kind of like last night when we did the hidden ball trick that kind of turned things around. That was big. And Blake’s been hitting the heck out of the ball and he’s been using the whole field, and he went the other way and went large and almost hit it out of here.” Said Gay: “I noticed he was throwing first-pitch fastballs the whole time, so I had to wait back and go (after a) first-pitch strike.” The Eagles drew two more walks after the Gay double before a pop-up ended the inning, but Scott had erased the initial three-run deficit and taken the lead. “Blake really came through in this tournament, he came up big and he’s had a big year,” Spata said. “That showed us that we’re in this game. We’re making plays, they’re making plays and we’ve got a good shot at winning this ball game. That was a clutch hit.” After the first batter in the top of the fourth was hit and the second reached on a throwing error, Seay was lifted. An RBI double tied it, but the inning ended on a lineout to freshman second baseman Jake Ohmer on which the lead runner was doubled off of third. “We had our infielders not in but midway,” Trame said. “Jake was able to catch that line drive out there. If we had them in, maybe he doesn’t catch that line drive. He got it, he knew what to do with it and that keeps them from having the lead, and that was huge.” The score held at 4-4 until the bottom of the fifth. Senior first baseman Cameron Kinney led off with a single and sophomore DH Andrew Trame was hit. Ohmer laid down a sacrifice, advancing both runners, and senior pinch hitter Nick Thurza – who came off the bench to hit a two-run homer in the regional opener – lifted a sacrifice fly to left to give Scott the lead for good. After consecutive singles to lead off the top of the sixth, Ohmer came in to retire all three hitters he faced as the Eagles dodged yet another Bourbon County scoring threat. “That’s one of the biggest things in baseball – you get out of jams like that, runners in scoring position, you go in, you’re ready to hit,” Spata said. “It just gives you all the momentum to score runs.” And Scott did just that, playing add-on with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Castleman singled home Spata and Brinkman, and Castleman eventually came home on a wild pitch. Ohmer overcame an error to open the top of the seventh to mow the next three hitters down and earn his first save of the season. Spata reached base in all four of his plate appearances and scored three runs. He singled to lead off the first and drew three walks. “He was huge,” Gay said. “Getting on base as a leadoff hitter is big. It gives us momentum and with our lineup we can get him around and get him to score.” Spata also made an outstanding defensive play, ranging up the middle to retire to leadoff hitter in the top of the sixth. His team led by just one at the time and the next two hitters reached, so that could have changed the outcome. “That’s why you’re 10th Region player of the year, because you go out and do that,” Jeff Trame said. “His on-base percentage is unbelievable. He’s had an incredible year.” After Seay was pulled, three Scott relievers combined to throw four scoreless frames. Senior Logan Herzog worked 1 2/3 innings for his second win of the season and Ohmer tossed two innings and allowed just one baserunner on an error. “What can you say?” Trame said. “Logan Herzog really has pitched well every time he’s gone out, and he’s pitched out of the bullpen all year, and he had not played last year. And then (Ohmer) comes in for him and gets out of a jam. We just kept picking each other up.” The top four in the lineup -- Spata, Brinkman, Castleman and Gay -- were all named to the all-tournament team. The Eagles will play Thursday's Boyd County-Corbin winner at 8:30 p.m. on June 2 in the first round of the state tournament in Lexington. Williams hit a foul shot and missed the second, but he grabbed his own rebound and was fouled again. Williams made the first one and could not convert the second, but Owen County junior guard Brady Young intercepted a full-court pass to seal it. Williams rolled up 30 points but fell 20 short of a game high. Demons senior guard David Jump scored 50 points, hitting 12 treys. The Bearcats were 16-for-18 from the foul line the fourth quarter and 28 of 31 (.903) for the game. Junior guard Allie Mills, senior guard Shelby Mullikin and sophomore forward Hailey Ison all drained four foul shots in the final period to put it away. Ison led all scorers with 24 points, and Mills finished with 16. Senior guard Julann Ginn came off the bench to drain a pair of 3-pointers that started the Walton-Verona rally in the third stanza. Junior center Liza Tibbs ended the night with 16 points, 12 of which came in the first half, to lead the Colonels.
