  1. Since Fat Patty's in Hungtington was mentioned earlier, I'd suggest the one in Ashland.
  2. If you have a charter bus company locally, the cost really isn't much different. At least that's what I've heard. Could be wrong.
  3. Fat Patty's is my joint. Love that place. Someone else suggested Jewel City, also good if you're looking to eat in Huntington.
  4. The feeder is what I always notice about Highlands. Don't seem to be extremely big or even much faster than the competition, just good football players. Excellent conditioning, good fundamentals, football smart, and winners. Seems like Highlands rarely ever has a kid out there that doesn't know exactly what technique to use, who to block etc. That's a tribute to tier coaching and the community around the program. The Highlands system would work anywhere if given the opportunity to be run correctly with proper community buy in. Not as much X and Os (though there is plenty of that) as it is fundamentals and just good football. Not saying everyone else would have the kind of success FTH has had because they wouldn't. Just saying that most programs in the state could definitely learn something from the way Highlands does things top to bottom. Same could be said for many programs at the top of the state, but I've always admired the way the Bluebirds do business.
  5. I'll say this...the difference in Highlands and most of the state is not simply platooning. That is a part of it, but Highlands along with a select few others have this football thing figured out. Platooning is an advantage, but is not truly insurmountable given the right team. I really envy their youth program, what a benefit for their program. To me, Highlands is as well coached, top to bottom as any program around. The community cares about football, and the kids are all in. The talent level is high, but not to the point to where they'd have the dominance they do. Just an excellent program.
  6. Exactly. If a player doesn't want to play in the playoff game, perhaps they should have chose another sport. Football is a sport. It is about competition and competing. 4 seeds have won before, especially in the bigger classes. Perhaps 1A and 6A should be bigger. Probably a better solution would be to limit the classes down to even numbers in which each district had 6 teams. Maybe that would only be the 4 class system, I don't know. 6 team districts are more competitive. You have to have won atleast two games. As for the argument about records, your record is really only as good as the teams you have played. There are tough teams across the state with 4 wins to show for the regular season, and teams that may not be as good as their record. If the worst thing that happens this week is that some overmatched teams get to extend their seasons by 4 extra quarters who really loses? I don't see how those kids do. Another game for kids who have put in a ton of work, in the heat and cold getting 48 more minutes is a bad thing? I don't see how the winning team does either? Get experience for younger guys in the playoffs? How is that bad? Before we start on injuries, they happen during games, at practice, at home, or anywhere else. A few years ago a team in our area lost their starting QB because he fell getting off the bus at a game and broke his arm. They are a natural part of sports and could happen anywhere. Lets be honest, this game is bad for the fans. That's the complaint. As a player on either team that doesn't want to go out and compete on a Friday night I don't get that. At best, you get 60 of those nights in your career. Many only get 40-44. Seems like a lot, but even at my age it goes quick and those who foolishly wish them away often end up regretting it. I don't care who you play, you're getting the privilege to play the best game in the world at the highest level that 99% of the players in KY will ever play. Enjoy it.
  7. How many of those opposed actually coach or have coached at a school in which there was not an automatic entry into the playoffs via a small district? The district our program is in has 6 teams in it, which means that you usually need at least two district wins to get in. Our program has made the playoffs for the first time since our seniors were freshmen. We see it as a program builder, something to build on with our team, which is predominantly sophomore and junior. Maybe its not always productive. Perhaps, 3 per district with the one seeds having a bye is a better solution. But, overall I'm fine with the current climate. Maybe the smaller class sizes should have a smaller playoff. Are there fewer teams in 1A currently than other classes? Is 6A like that too?
  8. How many kids want to devote all their time to two sports at once? Have you ever went to football practice and then had a soccer game? Unfortunately, when you have a soccer player as a kicker many think of themselves as soccer players first. I don't know the dynamics of BG, from the soccer schedule to the dynamic between the coaches of the two sports but from experience I do know that it is work. And that is from a school in which the coaches worked together and wanted those kids to play both sports. All I'm saying is that it takes a kid that actually wants to kick. Just getting a soccer player doesn't accomplish much. Kids have to be coached to kick a football, whether the team has a coach that can do it well or the kid will get coaching from outside sources such as camps or local kicking coaches. It's easy to second guess from the armchair position, but just adding a soccer player will not provide a team with a good kicker. Its not automatic, especially if you want the full arsenal of FG/EP, Punting, and Kickoffs. Kicking is alot of natural ability, but more than that it is a skill that has to be worked on and practiced, especially if you want more than an extra point kicker. If that's all you want a kid on the team can learn to do that in most circumstances.
  9. Still takes time and dedication to be a successful kicker. Time that many soccer players or even soccer coaches don't want to give up. The Huddle Boys at East Carter have been very solid kickers over the last few years. However, they have spent a ton of time kicking. A sample day last year would be Evan attended football practice and kicking for 30 minutes or so. Then he'd have to go to soccer practice. Or he'd have soccer practice and then finish up at football practice. Many players don't have that kind of dedication to do both sports right.
  10. Never been disappointed with a Vizio.
  11. I was underwhelmed when I saw them last year.
  12. I have. Bad call. Only saw it once.
  13. Just didn't want it to sound like a classless thing with 1 minute left against freshmen.
  14. Squib kick. Not an onside it was fielded at the 20.
  15. Born. Had this conversation with a parent recently. To be a major D1 player you need to be gifted. Even those who were "made" have gifts most high school athletes don't have. At the FCS level I think that a player could potentially maybe play if they were not born with great gifts. Most of the time it is a measureables game. If you dont have that then you really need to be a freak.
  16. No one is going to leave someone uncovered. But with your holder and kicker and potentially LS there are people you can't block. 9 on 7. 7 on 5. Doesn't matter. Need that wider edge to protect on PATs and FG.
  17. Cover all gunners and have no return man. There's always two you can't account for. I like man coverage with two free, unblocked guys in that situation.
  18. What are the high school figure of that. I can still send more than you can protect. Also lower trajectory kick.
  19. I don't think you could protect a FG attempt out of a punt formation. Shortened edge would be trouble. Operation time would have to be perfect.
  20. Seems like too much of an advantage on a true FG attempt. In theory you could attempt a 50 yard FG, the kicker could miss it horribly and you'd could pin the opposing team inside the 10 if the kick doesn't go in the end zone.
  21. I don't mind the strategy of never punting, always onside kicking, etc. but to be able to lineup and miss a FG and then not be penalized at the spot of the kick when the ball doesn't make it to the end zone is crazy.
  22. That's the worst rule I've ever heard of. That's rule is as bad as the free kick after a fair catch rule.
  23. But can you use it as a punt? I don't know that you can. Seems wrong. Would definitely be returnable in the college game but I don't know that you could advance the ball as the kicking team, using it as a punt.
  24. Are you sure about that? I don't think WC and Raceland are playing. Could be wrong though.
  25. Boyd the 5th best team in the area?
