What's the longest 4th-and-forever play you've ever seen come up?

 

Game I was at tonight had a 4th-and-61. Bad snap big loss on 1st down, then back-to-back sacks. I don't recall ever seeing one this long in person. May have seen longer in a college game on TV.

That would be the longest I have ever seen. Conceivably 4th and 98 would be the longest possible. Did they go for it and make it?

Lincoln County had a 4th-and-37 tonight against Garrard. Two loss rushes, a holding penalty and then an intentional grounding led to the long distance. They got off a pretty respectable punt though.

I'm not sure I've ever seen one that long and almost certainly not one that didn't involve penalties.

A few years back Franklin-Simpson was in a game with Logan Co. The punter was hurt and there was no viable back up punter. Backed up deep, like about the 17 yd line, Coach Schlosser sends in the FG unit. FS had a good kicker but he couldn't punt for squat. So FS attempted a 100 yd field goal and covered it like a punt. Logan Co had no clue what to do so they stayed away and the ball rolled forever. Flipped the field.

That is awesome but didn't the refs mess that up? I thought on a Field Goal in high school once you kicked it and it was short that the ball was dead, am I wrong on this?

I seem to remember in the Lorenzen/Smith years, Highlands converted 4th and 40+ TWICE in one game.

I saw a 4th and 69 I believe once in a DIII college game. Involved a bad snap over QBs head, a holding call, a sack, a personal foul and an unsportsman-like penalty.

UGA vs Michigan State back in the lat 1980s. MSU had a 4th and goal on their own 49 yard line and scored a TD. Andre Rison made a name for himself with that game.

As long as the FG attempt does not go into the end zone it is a live ball, returnable and recoverable.

But can you use it as a punt? I don't know that you can. Seems wrong. Would definitely be returnable in the college game but I don't know that you could advance the ball as the kicking team, using it as a punt.

Yes it works just like a punt. You can even angle it to kick it out of bounds and the other team gets the ball where it goes out of bounds.

 

Another option is to quick kick it on 3rd down which is a pretty good option.
