Is a D1 football player made or born?

Featured Replies

The question I have is do you think a D1 player is made by a High School program or just has a skill/size that others don't??

Can be either or both.

Can be either or both.

Agreed. And are we talking big time d1? Because I do think there is a difference. Just getting on a d1 roster is different than playing what I think most people think of when playing D1.

Yeah scholarship starting or walk on

I didn't think of it that way. That's good too. I was thinking like the number one overall recruit vs the kid that got the last spot on the worst d1 team. The number one could have just unmatched athleticism and size with a huge upside. The last kid could have been very undersized and a tad slow, but worked his tail off and is a very smart player, great teammate and leader. Both play d1, but two opposite examples of what you're talking about.

I lean more towards made than born.

My feeling is big time d1 kids have a little something different in the tank than the normal kid. When you are talking size and frame and athleticism, that is hard to overcome for someone without the natural abilities and size. Not saying it is always the case, but it's tougher for the other kid. I've seen many kids whose skills were lacking but had the "upside" taken way before others. Just because of size or speed. Sometimes that bites colleges in the butt, but I think they are more than often willing to take the chance.

I feel they take kids first on size/speed. Film on field performance is 2nd. Remember this is HS football. You may have played very bad teams to get your stats.

Ol' papa has used a simple "nature vs. nurture" analogy for years now. I firmly believe that it is applicable in many, many areas.

Nature (what you're born with) gives you a rubber band that is capable of stretching so far. Nurture (in this case, the pre-college football experience) determines how far the rubber band actually stretches.

I lean more towards made than born.

I'm feeling the opposite. I've seen some kids with great film and work ethic end up tearing up 1aa simply because they weren't tall enough.

True D1 are born that way, but........ They do have to sharpen the steel!

Born. Had this conversation with a parent recently. To be a major D1 player you need to be gifted. Even those who were "made" have gifts most high school athletes don't have. At the FCS level I think that a player could potentially maybe play if they were not born with great gifts.

Most of the time it is a measureables game. If you dont have that then you really need to be a freak.

Born then marketed correctly, if your coach has connections or as blue colonel said can "sharpen the steel" even better.
