How Does Your Team Travel For Playoff Games?

Featured Replies

There was an interesting discussion in the Raceland thread about former coach TJ Maynard's dislike of taking charter busses to away games. So it made me wonder what the normal is for other playoff teams.

Does your team take charter busses for all playoff games?

Or maybe only for longer trips like the semifinals and finals?

Or does your team stick with regular school busses?

Like Raceland in the past, Belfry always travels on the big yellow submarines, never on charter busses.

It is a practice that goes way back with this coaching staff. I think stems from the "bue collar" personna. I don't know if it is something Coach Haywood dictates or if it is just continuing a tradition from years past.

If you see Belfry on a road trip, whether it is an hour or 6 hours, you will see a convoy of school busses and fans, traveling together.

I know when I played (Ashland) if we always took chartered buses for trips to Montgomery County and Lexington. The boosters club always took great care of the football teams, and wanted them to travel in style.

We (Frankfort) took a charter bus once to Shelby Valley. Other than that, we always took school buses.

If you don't mind, please say what school you are talking about when you post.

Charter buses to all games, we had to raise the money for that ourselves though.

Just edited mine.

I assume you're talking about Lexington Catholic. Do they have school buses?

We use charter buses to all our games. Home or away. We don't have a stadium yet. We are building a new one that will open next year.

Yeah my bad I am. They have two very small old ones if I remember right. (Could just be 1). The football team wouldn't be able to fit on them either way, plus they are used by the other sport teams.

I think cost is a huge concern these days for all things school related. Especially for a rural school like Belfry, where there is not a charter bus company within 2 hours. I think Huntington or Lexington is the closest ones available, which drives up the cost even more.

Trinity uses charter coaches on any trip outside Jefferson County. 3 of the big beasts will roll into Brandenburg Friday.

IMVHO there's a safety factor involved. Old yeller wasn't built for long over the road trips, the coaches were.

When did charter buses become a thing? I remember going to playoff games in Leslie County and Whitley County bouncing up and down on the big yellow "limo." The thought of a charter bus was the same the thought of flying.

Watusi, I have it my head that in 1980 we were either going to Leslie County or Belfry. Leslie County won but I remember having to look up where the other possibility was and I think it was Belfry.

Were they 3A in 1980?

Yes, Belfry was the 3A runner up the prior year in 1979 and Leslie County was the other semifinalist.

We were 3A from the early 70's up through the 98 season. Then we went back to 3A when KY went to 6 classes.
