For Mayfield's part, would love to see this game being played where the Marshall game falls. A few weeks into the season and cooler weather would certainly benefit Mayfield. With that being said, it is what it is. Just think there is still too much that Mayfield needs to improve upon to give them much more than an outside chance of winning this, but stranger things have happened. This is really the year for McCracken Co. to beat up on the rest of West Kentucky. PT down, Mayfield down, Graves down, Marshall always down, Henderson down. It seems that McCracken may wear the region crown more by default than anything else. Can't see the Mustangs getting any deeper than last year unless the next region is down too.

Mayfield threw just enough to mix it up, but a steady dose of Tyler and Bright out of the backfield was all that was really needed. Those two alternated series because of the heat. 2nd half both teams just kind of went through the motions with the heat and a running clock in place. Mayfield is still a work in progress. The real test will come next week, hopefully it will be several degrees cooler in time for what perhaps could be the toughest game of the season on the turf at McCracken.

Look for McCracken to get after it against Tilghman this year leaving no doubt. Finally the Lone Oak, and now McCracken faithful get that win they've been looking for. 45 to 20 Mustangs.

Well, the defense was a work in progress last year. They really hit their stride when it came to the playoffs. In fact, the Caldwell Co. game likely served as motivation for the D to step it up when it mattered in postseason. I think the defense this year may make bigger improvements in season and will be a major force before the regular season is finished. If Arnett is allowed to use his speed early in the season, it will buy him a few weeks to improve his passing game. I like his moxie, but as I mentioned in another thread his height, or lack thereof, may be a problem when throwing over the top. 2013 had established leaders, 2014 will need to find those guys. If things don't go well early in the season, we'll likely find out who those leaders on this team are pretty quickly. I'm not sandbagging when I say this, but I've got to think this team will lose 2 or 3 regular season games this year. However, I will say this, they should still be the cream of the crop when it comes to 1A football. I just don't think 1A football across the rest of the state will make the leap over Mayfield this year. Bottom line: 2013 wins by a couple of scores (10 to 14 pts)

A few early season thoughts... *QB is really vertically challenged and passing down field will, more times than not, come from his rolling out. Just not tall enough to go over the top and see well over our bigger line. *A lot of air under some of the 20 to 30yd passes. Going to need to get some zip on these throws. Several balls were up for grabs for either team. Gotta work on the tunnel vision, threw right he was looking on several occasions. *Throws a nice ball and his speed will give us another diminision to our offense. *Good battle developing at the RB spot this year. Bright still needs to find a stutter step or something on a regular basis, speed won't do it all. Future for Tyler is promising. Hope he can find his way into the offense on a regular basis. *Kudos to the new kicker Herndon. 44 yard field goal right down the middle with 6 or 7 yards to spare. He's made great strides in the off season . *finally, nice job by Milan. Size and speed at the skill positions. They will be a force again in Tennessee.

Obviously all teams are looking to work on various things before the season starts, but when Mayfield takes on traditional, small school power Milan TN (Fri 8/8) they will simulate game conditions for about 3 quarters. This is always a good test for both schools because both usually go deep in the playoffs in their respective state. Mayfield has come away from this "practice" in the last few years looking the part as championship contender. Many of my fellow Cardinal posters are waiting for this scrimmage before making a real evaluation on the 2014 team. Do most of you look at it as, just that, a practice with another team... or do you usually put more stock in to what you see?

This thread MIGHT gain some traction when the state football championships are complete, but not until then.

We could tell by the 2nd paragraph in that you don't know anything about Mayfield. Fairview was supposed to be that "team of destiny" a year ago.

Weather could be nasty for this one. App saying rain to freezing rain. Game time temp of 30. This could really mess up a game plan or 2.

No disrespect to you Rambler or the jackets, but I don't know if Raceland's definition of very, very good is the same as Mayfield's. Mayfield is playing top 10 teams week in and week out. The Burg will probably be somewhere like 5th or 6th when it comes to toughest teams on the Mayfield schedule. It's all relative.

Sounds a little like the Fairview "syndrome" from 2012.
