If the current Mayfield team played the 2013 Mayfield team what would the result be? Why?

 

I don't mean the team from the finals last year, I mean if it was the first game for each team this year what would happen?

The only thing we have to compare with is the scrimmage against Milan for the 2014 squad....and I think, at this point, the 2013 team would win simply because that team had more experience at some key positions. Our new QB looks like he is going to be pretty solid, but at this point, is no match for Luke Guhy. I believe it would be a steady diet of Guhy to Jackson, and most of those would probably go for touchdowns. The 2014 team defensive backs need to really improve as the year progresses or passing teams (Caldwell Co., for instance)will definitely score some points against us.

2013 would or should win, they had a 3 year returning QB who had the full range from short to deep, a college signed WR, a experienced line and a returning short yardage back.

2014 has a inexperienced QB that will be hit and miss on his deep balls and reads, no power back and no big time WR, though we have a host of quality receivers and the line is inexperienced. Defensively this team is likely a little better at this point.

 

This team is very quick and talented but young, they remind me of our situation in 2011. In 2011 that team got better and better, this one has the potential to do the same. Most of the mistakes in the Milan scrimmage are quick fixes other than the QB and that takes time, in my opinion, it takes about a season or longer to get a QB to the level you need. This team has more depth and that may turn out to be significant, if not now, it will later and into next season. 2011 didn't have the depth at the end to keep things rolling when it mattered the most after the key injuries

Last year in the 1st game Mayfield came out against Fort Campbell and took care of business , No way is the new QB on par with Guhy and its not a fair comparison with him not yet starting a varsity game yet. Mayfield had a more experienced line last year and a big playmaker in Dion Jackson plus a veteran RB in Mills who could get the tough yards up the middle.

 

This years team will be good in time and I'm saying this year and the next 3 years at least with all the very good young players that are on this roster. I would have to say last years team would win but by how much I don't know. I look for this years team to be a definite favorite and should contend for the 1A crown.

I believe the 2013 team wins as well. I do think it would be a close game. We may actually have more depth and speed this year in the backs position than in we did in 2013. We have a power runner too in Hernandez to get the hard couple of yards when needed. Considering the half of the reciever group is the same as last year (Bacon/Kennemore) who had great games and big critical yards when needed are still there and battle tested. Tucker that played for Reed last year looks like a force again this year. I think the only real pivot point that gives the 2013 group a slight edge is the QB being experienced but as for overall speed and athletic ability, this 2014 group is dead even.

We have alot of chain moving players on this team. Of the recievers, the slot reciever group will be the chain movers this year. They are talented and tough and will be the easy quick reads for the young QB, the deep ball will not like happen as easy this year as it did last. Run game and short chain moving pass game will be our bread and butter this year...oh dont forget about the kicker Herndon..what a weapon!

 

I believe after all that, I say it would go to OT and 2013 would win.

Not even close. 2013 wins by a big margin, 3 touchdowns or more. 2013 was tougher in the trenches, QB was way better. I'm hearing a lot of cardinal fans saying 2014 defense is better, not a chance.

Well, the defense was a work in progress last year. They really hit their stride when it came to the playoffs. In fact, the Caldwell Co. game likely served as motivation for the D to step it up when it mattered in postseason. I think the defense this year may make bigger improvements in season and will be a major force before the regular season is finished.

 

If Arnett is allowed to use his speed early in the season, it will buy him a few weeks to improve his passing game. I like his moxie, but as I mentioned in another thread his height, or lack thereof, may be a problem when throwing over the top.

 

2013 had established leaders, 2014 will need to find those guys. If things don't go well early in the season, we'll likely find out who those leaders on this team are pretty quickly.

 

I'm not sandbagging when I say this, but I've got to think this team will lose 2 or 3 regular season games this year. However, I will say this, they should still be the cream of the crop when it comes to 1A football. I just don't think 1A football across the rest of the state will make the leap over Mayfield this year.

 

Bottom line: 2013 wins by a couple of scores (10 to 14 pts)

Not too answer for G but..

Yes, this is the 1A farewell tour and likely the last time MF will ever play most of if any of the 1A teams. I can only recall 1 time ever in MF's history that a smaller class school, both in state or out, played Mf and that was when I was a kid in the 80's when Mf played 1A Paris back when they had that winning streak going and we ended it for them in the Purchase Bowl.
