Mason County 20 Rowan County 7
You're only playing the card when you lose. Nobody's saying Mason didn't hold. They've had too many holding calls in other games. It's a problem they need to correct. No one's blaming refs but you. Besides, the a single official commonly calls most holds because of where he's lined up and what he's supposed to watch.

No argument with that. But, from what I've seen, the problem goes far beyond Mason County and needs t be addressed on a state level. Some are complaining this is a football thread. Here's a complaint I have regarding football. Blatant unsportsmanlike conduct should result in being thrown out to the game. Last year a Greenup County player blind sided a Mason Col offensive lineman jogging down the field 20-30 yards behind the play and knocked him for a flip. The player was flagged. This year in the Bourbon County game a Bourbon player while laying on his back was flagged for trying to kick a Mason player with his cleats. Such blatant attacks should result in more than a flag. For every act the refs catch, how many do they not see, too? My son has had players try to cleat him and no flag thrown. Last Friday, they called unsportsmanlike conduct twice on Darrel Cross of Rowan for hurdling players while he was running the ball. I understand safety is the purpose of that rule. A rule that doesn't exist in college or the pros. But, if they're going to that extent in the rules, why are players who intentionally and illegally try to harm other players allowed to stay on the field? This concerns me more than any fan behavior I've seen. (You've got a few years on me in attending games, but not many. :-)

Poor Fan Behavior
I've seen worse at other schools. What you're saying is that the Mason administrators didn't do what you wanted them to. People don't do what I want them to to all the time, even my kids. The principal made them settle down during the second half. I've been at basketball games where cheerleaders would gather right next to the visiting teams bench and yell during time outs so players couldn't hear their coaches. A northern KY school has, or had when my son played against them, the most obnoxious student cheering section I've ever seen. Another rural schools fans yelled "Cry baby, Cry baby,...." when a player on my son's team lay injured on the floor. (My oldest son played basketball for St. Patrick's, not Mason County.) I won't name schools because I'm not out to attack any particular school. Certain schools seem to specialize in cheap shots on the football field. Is it a mystery a Mason football player has suffered a broken bone against the same team the last two season? If Mason is the worst you've seen, you're not looking very hard. The Mason students' actions were unacceptable to the point I called my son on his cell phone, rather than search thru a bunch of blue shirts, to make sure he wasn't in that crowd. But, unfortunately, I've seen and heard worse. Some of the stuff I heard and saw coaches do and say in AAU basketball amazed me. However, in general, I've found the high school football crowds to be better than the basketball crowds. Rowan County fans were excellent this past Friday as were Danville when Mason visited there.

I was at that game. I don't think you're being entirely truthful. The students were overdoing it and the principal did take action. There seems to be a lot of bad blood between Mason and GRC on the basketball court and you're certainly stirring it up with a one sided view. It was certainly a disappointing loss for GRC considering they led most of the game. The only things I yell at players is cheering a good play and encouragement. Of course, I'm the guy who, when I played, congratulated my opponents when they made good plays. (I confess I feel it usually gave me a slight advantage when my opponent thought I was a good guy.)

A lot of holding calls. Mason shot themselves in the foot several times with those. We were close to the front of the line at the accident before we turned and took a detour. Usually it's bad when you have traffic stopped 100%. My thoughts and prayers to those involved.

We took a looooonnnnnngggg detour via Hillsboro.

He throws the ball on a low trajectory. Several passes were tipped by defensive linemen. Mason was ready defensively. If it hadn't been for some holding penalties, Mason probably would have won by more.

Mr. Versatility, Northern Kentucky
Exactly the two I was going to mention. Any time they are on the field, either one of them can turn the game around in one play. Harris has good hands as well and catches a few passes.

Top WR's in NKY
Jordan Gilbert, Mason County - 3 games, 24 receptions, 311 yards, 4 TDs.

Mason County / Rowan County Predictions
Can't venture a guess on this one. But, I think it comes down to the coaches. Game plan, play calling and defensive strategy. Mason should be at 100% on defense for the first time this year.

Why does Ohio have a better brand of football than Kentucky?
Tennessee has a few schools that can compete with anyone, Alcoa and Maryville come to mind. But, again, Tennessee has a slight advantage in urban areas. Both Memphis and Nashville areas are slightly larger than Louisville. Both Knoxville and Chattanooga areas are slightly larger than Lexington. Plus Tennessee has nearly 2 million more people overall than Kentucky. And, as most of us know, Tennessee is a football crazy state. Growing up there (Knoxville), I remember playing sandlot football at the age of 5 but never picked up a basketball until the 4th grade although I eventually became the MVP on my high school team and never played organized football. Sandlot football was common. You could find a game on any Saturday in the fall and most during the spring and summer. Make no doubt about it, Highlands is a nationally competitive program in my book there are probably a couple of other teams in Kentucky on any given year that are quite good. Between more kids wanting to play basketball and a smaller population, Kentucky doesn't put out at many high level football teams as some other states.

Why does Ohio have a better brand of football than Kentucky?
Ohio has football tradition that goes back t when Paul Brown coached at Massillon Washington High School and before. Kentucky's football tradition goes back to when Bear Bryant left because the gave him a lighter and Adolph Rupp a Caddy (ad disputed story, BTW). Even though the kids per school are greater in KY, when you have more kids, like Ohio, the odds are greater that you'll have a big time talent show up. Simply put, Kentuckians, on the whole, do not care as much about football as basketball. The basketball/football comparison isn't a good one. Only 12 guys on a basketball team but you need 12 guys minus 1 on the field for football. One great player, which is more likely to happen in Ohio because of the greater population, can make a team.

Running up the score?
Depends on how you get the points. If you keep the first string in too long, you're running up the score. If you put in the backups fairly early on and they keep scoring, well, they came to play too. It's not fair to the backups to tell them to sit on the ball. Like tsyoung7 said though, gross mismatches aren't good for anyone.

Concession Stands
Some of the Mason County tailgate meals are the best you'll have for $5. Plus, the company is excellent.

Quality coaches bolting across the borders
Other than the reasons already mentioned, and this was touched upon by Harry Doyle, Kentucky is a basketball state. Basketball gets all the hoopla. In Tennessee, Ohio, and, considering Notre Dame's location, Indiana, football reigns. It's closer in Indiana but since Bobby Knight left, not as much has happened there in basketball.

Is Mason County a football school, or a basketball school?
True. Coach Buchanan has done a great job and generates a lot of enthusiasm. We still have a way to go though. In 2003 when my oldest son was a freshman at MC, 41 boys tried out for the 12 positions on the freshman basketball team. I don't think we've ever gotten that many to try out for freshman football even though all would make the team. The current senior class came close.

Question about camcorder
Of the video cameras Consumer Reports tested the Canon Vixia HF S21 rated tops, price $1,400. The JVC Everio GZ-HM550 was rated a best buy, price $750. I usually go with the best buy stuff myself.

The Passing Game
Looking at Alcoa High School in Tennessee stats from last year, their 6th straight state championship. They only attempted 80 passes in 15 games which is slightly over 5 passes a game. Defense plays a huge role. Alcoa averages 8.5 yards per offensive play. Their opponents average 3.1. Boss Hog stresses the importance of teams being multi-dimensional He's right. And, judging from the most successful team in the history of Tennessee football, running and defense outweigh passing.

Mason County 34 Montgomery County 28
Great moves, great speed, great hands. A hard combination to beat. He faked two guys out so bad for the final touchdown last night they're probably still looking for their socks.

Gilbert's as elusive player as I've ever seen in high school. That's probably why a physical corner can't tip him over. Or, maybe they do, but eventually he makes the play because he can score from anywhere on any play.

Best Games You've Seen In Person
I loved the game against Ashland after the Rockcastle County game ine 2003. As I remember, at the end of the thirid quarter the game was very close and Dustin Grutza blew it open int eh 4th quarter and Mason ended up winning 44-21. His teammates carried him off the field.

KY Associated Press Poll Out
I agree. We need to see a lot more out of them than we saw last Friday. I'd be hesitent to claim they're the best in their district.

Danville/Rockcastle County Predictions
Danville's defense made the difference against Mason Co with Mason Co. having an excellent RB, WR and QB. Danville has very good defensive speed. If Rockcastle has a small O-line, it could be a long night for them.

Mason County/Montgomery County predictions
Seemed to me the linebackers/defensive backs needed to re-act to the run more quickly. The d-line was occupying more than its share of blockers which should have left some other defenders free. Too much arm tackling, too. I heard some comments that they seemed to be trying to strip the ball from the runner rather than tackle.

I assume Melini's is good. I might try it out too.
