I know this may morph into as much a basketball question as a football one, but since we are in the season, I decided to put it in this forum.

 

The reason I ask, I know that the success of the basketball program has been awesome. Coach O'Hearn has been great, Darius, and all the rest have had wonderful success. But lately, the success of the football program, and the prospects of this season namely got me thinking about this question. I know that in Eastern KY schools like Russell and Raceland are "football schools" and most of the fans there would hardly argue that. Ashland, while there has been success in both sports, I still think it's a football school. And I know that you don't have to be one or the other, but I was wondering what the Mason folks thought about it, and what those outside Mason viewed them as.

Basketball, no doubt.

 

Really, what has Mason county done in football. Maybe make it to the playoffs often, but with the way the system is now, a lot of teams do this. My opinion is that a football school needs a few championships and has built up a tradition over the years to be considered a football school.

I understand and tend to agree, but if we are equating success with championships, then there simply aren't very many football schools then.

If your basketball program is winning REGION and STATE championships and football is not then I say basketball school. A lot of schools that aren't winning football championships aren't winning in basketball either.

Not many Trinity, Highlands, St X, Danville, Beechwood, Boyle Co, Mayfield and maybe a few others when talking about state championships.

Add in Louisville Central, Fort Campbell, LCA, NCC......more football schools than basketball schools due to the nature of only one state champion in Kentucky.

A few years ago I would have said basketball without a doubt, but I think Mason is going with the University of Florida approach - we can do both. Mason County has really stepped it up in football while maintaining their Basketball. Hats off to them.

True. Coach Buchanan has done a great job and generates a lot of enthusiasm. We still have a way to go though. In 2003 when my oldest son was a freshman at MC, 41 boys tried out for the 12 positions on the freshman basketball team. I don't think we've ever gotten that many to try out for freshman football even though all would make the team. The current senior class came close.

Again, if you are measuring success by championships, you are only going to have a hand full of teams that meet the football school criteria. You have to measure success with a broader term then championships.

What have they did on the field? We all know what they have did in the gym.
