  1. Although they have not had much success recently, Harlan's run in the 13th region in the nineties has got to get them in the running. 4 Regional titles one trip to the semis and seven or eight All A Regional titles, plus two Class A State Titles, not to shabby by Coach Mike Jones and his boys.
  2. With close to a third of the season gone, what changes do you see in the top ten?
  3. I cant beleive that I left off this guy from Cawood list Gary Grant he might take on some of these young guns today. Again not to cut on Blake, but he played for five years on the varsity and also had the three point shot, most of the players from the list did not play in the three point era, and only Cox played 4 years on the varsity.
  4. Hearld was the one that I had going back and fourth on I would agree that he should be there but Husky Turner was a man on that 77-78 team he led the team in rebounds and always dominated the paint at just over six feet. Mike Howard was more than a roll player on the mid 70s teams he would however take a back seat to Parks but he could be counted on to get needed buckets, and single handed kept Cawood in the Regional finals after most of the other starters had fouled out. As for the argument on Hubbs he was a scorer and a good passer but he could never play any defense at all, he was very slow and could not jump. (This is what I was told by the college coaches that I begged to come to the regionals to see him vs Cash and Rockcastle), Cash by the way did go on to play at the next level.
  5. Blake is not of the same level as Nick or Phil, he had no college offers and both of these players were stars at the next level. I really like Blake but he is not in the top ten best players to play at Cawood. My top ten would be Sanford, Cox, Coldiron, L Rhymer, D Hensley, H Jordan, D Parks, M Howard, E Eads, H Turner.
  6. Dickie Parsons Todd Cox Wah, has one thing that no one else has, Sweet Sixteen Title, NCAA Title, and a Olympic Gold medal.
  7. Yes it was the same fellow, he had a long standing radio show on WSGS for many years. It wasn't that he disliked the schools from NKY, but he strongly felt that teams and players from EKY did not receive the same type of recognition as the ones from the "golden triangle", and he made it his life's work to try and change it. Make no mistake he had great respect for the Tigers and Bluebirds. He has now passed on to the big mic in the sky, but you know he and Vernon Cooper will be doing the game live for all of the Eastern Kentuckians that have since passed on. RIP BD&VC
  8. The Dragons got a great effort from Jecory Fields (triple double) in beating Jackson Co by 15 in the Doc Grey Classic. This was one of the best games in terms of team play that Harlan has played in some time. If these kids take a long look at the film and see what they are capable of doing on the court, and make the effort each and every night, it might be the surprise of the year in the 13th. Its only one game but I was also surprised by how they played at Knox Central this past week, good job and keep it going.
  9. Hazard will play this one in honor of longtime supporter (Big Dipper) he loved to rag on Beechnut as he called them. It would be great for mountain football to get a win in this one, but Beechwood is the Class of the state and I see it continuing.
  10. Of the young backs Harlan Co's Cody Taylor has the makings of a real nice RB, he is small in height 5'6" but has great speed and has natural cut back moves, he is also a headhunter on D, with another year in the weight room he could have a breakout year in 09.
  11. I guess that after you see a team go 2-8 and play some pretty good teams decent, that its hard to picture going over to Pikeville and walking away with a win. You are right in your thinking that the region as a whole is down from years past, and if you are bad at 70 degrees you could be worse at 20. My point is that most kids in Harlan Co think when it is cold outside its no longer football season and that is just another mind set that our guys have got to get over to be able to climb the ladder for more statewide success. How's this lets send both our teams across the mountain and bring back two wins, if so it could rank up with some of the most successful weekends in Harlan Co sports history!!! Man I love football.

  13. Sorry DC I didn't mean to get your screen name backward, sometimes I tend to get mixed up. It has been about six weeks ago, and I can't tell you why they have improved so much but they have and I really feel that if they can get past the big hurdle they will play them tough and possibly get a win and move on to the regional finals. Now as to what the big hurdle is, the cold weather and which team handles it the best, I know that every team will have to be in it this Friday, but some teams wilt during this time of year and I really think that playing when its 20 degrees it will be a major factor.
  14. When the old district was split and Harlan went with Pineville to form district 7 Lynn Camp and Williamsburg got the bad end of the deal having to win a region going through any Lexington school. In most years Harlan should be playing for the #1 seed in Dist. 7 which should get you to the second round of the playoffs almost every year. BTW cat daddy Harlan has improved as much this year as any team that I have seen from the start of the season until playoffs.
  15. I think that the Dragons will play Pikeville very tough, when you compare scores you can really get into looking bad, but the Panthers should see a very much improved Harlan team.
  16. Why do they have this problem? I know that some schools can and some never seem to get it right. Bell Co is probably the model for the smoothest transition from success at the middle school level to continued success at the high school.
  17. Bears get to see if they can erase their only bad performance of the 1st season, by getting a shot at Breathitt Co. This could be a good one!!
  18. The Green Dragons have played much better football the last half of the season, huge game on the ground for Link, and Hensley. On defense the Dragons were led by James Hill and Kenny Pennington. Field conditions probably hurt Allen Central's passing game but the line of scrimmage was controlled by Harlan's line on both sides of the ball. Now it is on to Pikeville to try an get to advance on to the regional final.
  19. Harlan gets a hard fought win with Cornett and Link back and ready to go, Dragons 24 Rebels 18
  20. From what I hear, the kids of today don't pay much attention to what some of us old dudes feel would be important. Such as old rivalries, they play for today and don't seem to care about yesteryear.
  21. Harlan and Pineville are one of the longest running streaks it was started back in the 20s, HDE knows for sure as they did a story on the streak this year.
  22. I do know her and she is very well versed in the game, she is a tireless worker in all areas of the booster program. Bear family is very lucky to have her on their side, we are on different sides when it comes to the programs that we support, but she always asks how our kids are doing as do I of hers. The best way to describe Mama is that she is CLASS, nuf said.
  23. I think that they were about to make a first down and that would have sealed it, at that point they could have taken a knee. It was the right move if you are trying to have any shot at a win. Hey I thought that they Somerset game was a home game, and that would give three home games?
