Such as? Who seemed to be ready to compete come fall? Did they run their pass D very well? I agree that they still have a ways to go to get back to making any serious run for the district.

Why would I not want to answer? While I don't him (Larkey) personally, I know that he is well respected by most coaches and by people that I respect, if I choose to send my son to HCHS I would be very happy for him to play for a coach such as Tom Larkey. A lot of things can happen before my son is a freshman, such as will coach Larkey be there for his four years of high school? At this time we feel that for our child the best situation is for him to go to HHS, mainly for the academics that is offered to him at this time, and the continued success that the smaller schools have in this area.

Did whoever went to the passing scrimmadge see Harlan and how they looked? I think that there is another one on Thursday at Pineville hope to get to that one.

They played a time or two in the 70s, not sure as to when but it was early to mid decade.

I don't think that you have to, but if you do, I have to go where my kids go and support them first. As a parent, I think that would be my duty, or I could be like some on here that send their children to the city school (when they live in the county district) and beat the war drum for the county, sound like someone we know.:jump:

I had been told the same thing yesterday but was hoping that it was not true. Why would you forfeit your entire district hopes over one game? What seemed to be the big problem on this, some of the other schools in the 3A district as Cawood were not to happy with the way they allowed HCHS to take the Trojans place in this years 3A alignment.

I seem to be misunderstood on what I hope happens for the Bears, I hope that they successful in all sports and I will attend most games and cheer for them if my kids are not playing. This petty thin skin phobia that permeates these conversations needs to be set aside for the good of all Harlan county and its athletes. Where it needs to start is with me and what I let get my dander up.

Who's fault is that? As many on here have stated it is not the countys job to look out for the citys interest, so it is not the citys problem to help the county with its schedule.

It wasn't meant to be a low shot, but to me it seems that as long as the supporters of HCHS can have the upper hand it is ok to take shots at Harlan Ind's sports programs but when someone offers a different view it is a low shot.

Harlan Ind has an enrollment of less than 300 and the new HCHS has preregistered over 1400 in football more than any other sport numbers mean something.

Eastern has taken a big interest in Ball but they question his work ethic, as with most players from our area the colleges that I have been in contact with have a problem with the desire to be a college player and mental toughness. Most kids and all parents really have know idea what it really takes to play sports at the college level. This is one of the biggest reasons that of the few that have the chance to go and try to compete don't seem to stay very long. Now before I hear the exceptions which there are a few this is not my opinion but what coaches at the next level feel is our hurdle to overcome.

I guess that Harlan Ind would play Corbin and HCHS could continue to play all of the class A schools they can.

That is a great time on laser, I know we took some kids this spring and they had never used a laser start and their times were a couple of tenths slower than any hard times that we had used prior to going to Louisville.

Some of the players said that R Bargo has not been attending anything as well as D Smith and J Ball has said that he will start this week. I have heard that Coach Larkey is not to happy with these older kids that think since they played last year that have a spot on this team, He will have to make an example out of some and hopefully the rest will see what it is going to take to build this program.

Gilliam and a couple of freshman were over at my house last night and you know boys will be boys, so they had to have some competition so Nate and Taylor raced and Nate beat him by a couple of yards. They both can really run, I would have to see 4.5 or low 4.6 but reguardless they can move. Both of these two are about 5'6" to 5'7" and go around 150 lbs.

The city -county bowl(not sure on the name) looks like it is going to take shape as of now, coach Larkey seems to be all for it, and coach Donahue has been working out the details. The format will be for Harlan Co / Harlan Ind to play like teams within the same area so to try and get the best possible crowds. Teams such as Corbin-Lynn Camp would be one possible selection. The site will rotate between the two Harlan schools, they are trying to get some companys to agree to help with the sponser end of things and it should be all set for the 09 season.

Think about it, that was a home game for me. I agree they can be useful to a degree but for a team that will be run first, pass second it will not give a good look until the pads go on and they quit playing touch. It was kinda hard to tell how they had them split because the HC squad was playing on both ends at the same time. In all fairness the three other teams have had time together and know each other and their assignments on both sides of the ball, whereas HC has only been together for a few days. Buster I can't understand why you would have to call another coach after reading my post now that is just insulting.

They were offered an opening in a bowl game in Lexington, I am sure the weighed the option of a bowl game in Harlan to one in Lexington. With the team they have coming back one could see how they might opt for state wide coverage through the media. IMO

On a football note, went to the 7 on 7 at Pineville where there were four teams doing pass skelly, Knox Central, Williamsburg, Harlan Co and the host lions. Some positive things for the Bears were they had 34 players compete using two seperate units, it looked as if they had twice as many players as any of the other teams. Blanton seemed to be the qb with the 1st group he did some things well, some good reads, he also throws a dart and the receivers need to work on catching some balls with a little zip on it. On the offensive side they were running out of trips or bunch set out of the shotgun with one back in the backfield. There was some confusion as expected but they were being coached up between each play and seemed to respond. On the defensive side I could see where Lungbuster felt that a passing team could give them trouble, especially in the early season. I spoke with one of the coaches and the basis of their scheme is to stop the run first, so it would be hard to gauge their effectiveness in a setting like last night. Coach Larkey and staff have a lot of ground to cover in a short time, plus trying to learn all of the players strengths and weaknesses. After one viewing there are a lot of things in place to be a nice team, but fans should be very understanding that this a building process and there could be a few bumps in the road, but I see the road getting some blacktop and the ride smoothing out .

I was at the meeting with the representative and I was one of the people that suggested that we might be able to pool our resourses to get a stadium like the one at Pikeville with the field turf that has multiple uses. In no way is this riding the coatails of anyone. The reason behind the suggestion was that with the cost factor involved in building HCHS and how it became double the origional cost projection it seemed to be an alternative to keep from having to play at Cawood's field for the first few years, and it could help both school districts. You also might be able to get Rep. Nelson on board if it would help more than one district, he alone has five school districts in his area and might be more inclined to help two over one. JMHO

If Blanton gets the nod at qb, I feel that the bears will go with a pretty high power ground game, with the backs that we have mentioned earlier in this thread. Not saying the Blanton is not a good enough passer but with the backs that he will have available he might learn to be a real hander-offer. Who are some of the standouts on the D-side of the ball?

I think he was saying that he was sweepy, and had a hard time with his sentance, sorta like Ernest T Bass.:dancingpa
