  1. Does anyone agree that the best of the backs are Green, Gilliam, and Clark, I really like these three to carry the bulk of the load for the bears. Green is sort of a throw back to the glory years in football for the county, 70s-80s type of player that can play any spot in the backfield and will be very good at it. Gilliam is a back that has very good speed for our area and he and green should make a nice combo. Who will be the qb might be the biggest question for the coaches to answer. I guess that the LCC game is on for the 29th of August wow what an opener. This might be on of the most hyped games of the year in the mountains.
  2. Push, I hope that they get back to winning a playoff game
  3. I'll also give this a whack, yes it is true that Harlan decided to not play in the CVC middle school football league 2-3 years ago. The reason was that the 7-8 grade team at Harlan was down to under 16 players and it was determined that because Bell Co and New Harlan were dressing close to 50 each that the 7-8 team was not able to compete at that level with these teams. I think that we are all in agreement that in football when you are rebuilding it is nessessary to soften your schedule to a level that you can either play with or close to with out getting players hurt or disenchanted with the sport. It is sort of like when Cawood opted out of playing Bell co when they did not have to because they were in different classes. They could not compete so they played teams that they compared with on the field. Evarts, Cumberland, and Harlan all class A teams, in some of your minds this is ok but for Harlan to do the same thing it is somehow wrong. It boils down to this as long as Harlan is willing to take a butt whipping at the hands of any of the county schools things would be alright. BTW I really hope that the new school has tremendous success in all areas and hopefully Harlan can get their programs back to a level where they can have success in the Class A tournys. How great would that be for us to have two teams playing for regional titles in football at the same time how about that for a dream!
  4. Over on Pennington, I think Cole may have a good senior year and help provide some help on the inside.
  5. Hey coach, I talked to scott a couple of times and we tried along with Parks to get something worked out also tried with the coaches at Cumberland and we both needed some fill in games. All this stuff is water under the bridge but last year I would have really liked to have played you guys to see where we were as a team.
  6. Solo or totals?
  7. Hensley has to get a bunch of touches in order for the dragons to have some success, Link will run hard but is not a break away threat, Pennington should be a lot stronger this year and that could be a huge help.
  8. I' ll say just over. Youth coach shouldn't you be playing poker?
  9. It better be over or it will be a real long season
  10. It is my hope that somewhere down the road that Harlan and Harlan can play in football similar to Paintsville - Johnson Central it would be a great rivalry and like lungbuster said it could go a long way to fund both programs in the home year. I know that VIP sports is putting together a city/county bowl for the 09 season and it is coming together very well. I think that the format would be to alternate years as to who hosts, with both teams playing regional teams that would draw nice crowds.
  11. Well to tell you the truth I know we called at least 3-4 times trying to get games with all three county middle school teams, because they were having trouble getting games also, but we had no luck even though we all could have used some games. So I guess we tried pretty hard. Now before someone takes this and twist what I am saying, by no means did I think that we were avoided by the county middle schools, the real reason is more than likely a little payback because Harlan pulled out of the middle school CVC. To give my honest opinion I can't really blame them for the decision.
  12. I think that you may have missed my point, if you are saying that New Harlan and Harlan Ind should play because in most years that would help Harlan by playing up. If that is the case should HCHS a 1400+ school be playing 350 or class A Lynn Camp in both instances they are trying to build their programs, so by your logic if it not good for one how is ok for the other? Now I do realize that we are discussing apples and oranges with a middle to high school situation but you really struck a nerve.
  13. Get you facts straight HDE I know for a fact that Harlan needed games in the 5-6 grade level and called numerous times to the county schools middle school AD and could not get a game. They asked to play every team including New Harlan, so avoiding is not what happened last year. I wonder if you would answer the question that was asked about consolidating all of the county middle schools for football, you sort of side stepped that one. Ask the coaches and parents of Evarts and Cumberland if they felt they had a fair chance to compete against New Harlan for the last few years. Finally if your opinion is that you don't build a program by avoiding better competition then what say you of HCHS playing Class A Power Lynn Camp, BTW no disrespect to either program but it seems to me that as long as it is ok for one it shouldn't be bad for the other. The conference teams that we are in has Middlesboro Lynn Camp Williamsburg Pineville all the same size schools as the High school what a novel idea.
  14. Does Zack Osborne still play for PRP?
  15. I am not sure that they should be classified as great, but for a class A program the strength is in 7-8 grade as far as talent and numbers. The 8th grade class has 14-16 players and the 7th had twenty three that played as 6th graders so for shear numbers and depth these are the two classes that could carry the torch and put Harlan back in the hunt for a district and maybe a regional title, but as in any program that is a ways off from now.
  16. I must agree that it is a real nice staff, changing gears went by the school today and it really is looking nice the landscape is taking shape and the final cleanup is underway and it is just OTH (off the hook), the students are going to be in awe of this building and its resources.
  17. I am having trouble following the logic here, during the mid-ninties the Rock was one of the top programs in the state, and coach Larkey was the master mind, but Harlan County is a first year consolidated school with very little tradition from which to build and to equate the success of one state power to the hopeful success of a start up school dosen't make much sense to me. Am I wrong? If so enlighten me as to why it should be looked at in this way.
  18. What are the other seven going to be doing? Are all of these paid assistants or are they just there to help with whatever is needed.
  19. 12 coaches? What about Jacob and Dondi.
  20. No disrepspect to coach Larkey, he is a fantastic coach, but he doesen't have a great 40 time, and I think that his playing time is past.
  21. It was my understanding that Somerset did loose a bunch of seniors. Checked LCC schedule an they have only 4 home games I don't see them traveling to Harlan either.
  22. Could someone please post a schedule for LCC.
  23. In my prediction for the upcoming season for the Harlan Co bears this game gave me the most trouble. Estill was able to just maul Cawood last year and they did not loose much so this one could go either way.
  24. How do you guys see the Estill vs Harlan Co shaping up,this could be for a home playoff game. In both games against Cawood they were able to run at will and put big numbers on the scoreboard.
  25. From the things I have picked up the new field will be 2-3 years away unless they are able to get a private donor somewhat like happened for Belfry. If only someone local could win the lottery, other than that it will take time, hopefully that is not a major hurdle for the Bears, Cawood has the parking, and at the present time they are putting a new sprinkler system, and surface down, if they go with bermuda like Harlan it is a good playing surface but it must be maintained almost daily. Lungbuster I have found you a job, mower man!!!
