The guys doing play-by-play said, "We must have set the broadcasting world back about 30 years...because there was no holding it together." They sent the video but not the audio. That would have been fun too. Someone said the referee had done a 5th-6th grade game a week earlier and was not wearing the hairpiece. This particular night must have been its preview. And, as it turned out, its swan song.

Sportswriters don't write the headlines for their stories. That is someone else's job.

The Voice of the Sweet 16; he was special, indeed. We could have just turned up the "crowd mic" for the starting line-ups before each of the games...and let fans back home hear how a real public address man does it. Got to be there championship night in 1996...his last state tournament game. Thanks for posting Guru.

I talked to Jeff Bridgeman today (author of Kentucky High School Basketball Encyclopedia.) He is putting together a football book...due out next fall...just like the roundball one. While talking about the history of Western Kentucky teams, he mentioned that Henderson football goes back to 1895. I have a note from the Madisonville Messenger in 1944 that said: Longest running rivalries in the WKC (Western Kentucky Conference:) 1. Henderson vs. Owensboro...started in 1903 (O’boro won the 1944 game 39-0 and led the series 27-13-6) 2. Madisonville vs. Hopkinsville...started in 1907. 3. Paducah vs. Mayfield...started in 1911. (Obviously that's a football note. Sorry I don't have anything to add to the roundball part of it.)

AC-S had a pretty good team. Might they have been looking ahead to a re-match with F-S?

'Twas widely speculated that the winner of the first round game in '78 would become the champion. Sure enough Shelby County beat Apollo 62-55...and the Rockets went on to win it all. Apollo, with Steve Barker and Jeff Jones, finished 35-1. Shelby County, with Charles Hurt, was 31-3.

Won the district. Lost the 7th Region final to Ballard 72-70.

Madisonville in 1988 (29-4) and '89 (30-5) had terrific teams with Travis Ford. Only 4 of 9 total losses came to Kentucky teams.

Those guys did win state as Juniors, so there is some consolation there. And the team that beat 'em (by 2 points) in the '76 region final was Richard Schmidt's Ballard team...which was getting ready to win it all in 1977.

Never been to YUM nor BB&T. Agree, Rupp is bigger than necessary to hold the crowds (which are, indeed, dwindling.) But I still think Rupp is the mecca. Ya gotta have it there if possible. The way I remember it: when the Louisville schools were playing, their crowd would frequently be the smallest of the bunch...whether it was at Freedom Hall or Rupp. No doubt my memory isn't what it used to be...but I got to be part of broadcasting the entire Sweet 16 from 1974-1991. Looking back, it would have been fun to have a picture of each corner of the gym...at least for the first round games...to see how many folks each team brought.

Shucks; knew the story at one time, but now don't even remember what book it was. There was more about the South Bend Central job and all that he learned there...about learning to deal with parents, society, school principals, etc. Dayton, KY probably wasn't a whole lot different from his home town of Martinsville, IN.

No doubt there are several KHSAL guys who would be worthy of discussion. But accurate information about their careers and the competition is almost impossible to find. Bummer!
