Very good points on the victories; the division they play in means less to me. There is no question who the top three football teams in Kentucky are and I think that many objective fans of football in Kentucky would argue that Highlands is no worse than number two. Highlands could have played for a state title in the highest division, they are not in that division so they haven't had the opportunity. An argument could be made that Highlands beats Manual and Male in every year if they played in the last 10 years, as well. Let me end on this, I am not 100% certain that X isn't better than Highlands in the last 10 years. I still was mildly surprised by the inclusion of two Kentucky teams and that the second team was St. X.

My point was based on seeing 2 schools from Kentucky on this list. If there are two, then I was mildly surprised Highlands wasn't the second one. In the last 10 years, Highlands record compares very favorably with St. X. BTW, size didn't prevent the Birds from beating the number 4 team on this list.

Is there any more pressure packed situation than the expectation that you will beat Trinity in your first year...twice?

Some big school bias on this list for sure. Folks gave the names of the teams that are missing. Drop Manual, Henry Clay, Ballard, Scott County and John Hardin. Add Mayfield, Central, Beechwood, Ft. Campbell and Danville, IMO.

Surprised Hoover and S. Panola are as low as they are. Also mildly surprised that Highlands wasn't the second Kentucky school. California is tough, but neither Mission Viejo nor Poly have a state title since 2006 when California went to a state title system. Surprised they made the list. I would drop them and add Miami Northwestern and Lake Travis in Texas. I could probably name about 10-15 schools that could be on this list (Jenks, Highland Park, Bishop Gorman, Mater Dei, JT Curtis, Independence in Charlotte, etc), so that means it is probably a decent attempt at something like this.

I don't. My brother in law likely will. He played with Aaron Miller, Tubs Glancey, Daniel Pfau and that crew. He played for Coach Damron.

For some reason, I am thinking the position has a 401K or 457 K benefit attached and not a part of a pension program.

Perspective- the Director of Football Operations at Southlake Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas is their head football coach Hal Wasson. This is a six figure position that does not require teaching or administrative duties outside of the football program. Everything is bigger in Texas!

In case folks are curious- the Allen Eagles are playing in the 5A Division 1 state title game vs. Houston Lamar HS.

If players are sent to the sideline that is different than being on the field, so a coach can talk to them. If players are on the field of play during an official stoppage I do not believe that a coach can talk to those players on the field. I also think we may be talking about some different scenarios based on what folks are writing. I want to make myself clear. 1. If a game is stopped for an injury, I have my players that are on the field take a knee. I have my student managers take water to them while they are on a knee, but no coaches talk to those players on the field. The players on the field will talk to each other, however. 2. My players that are on the sideline do not take a knee and we continue to coach those players as we would at any other time during the game. 3. If it is my player that is injured, the position coach will speak to the player about to go in since this player is on the sideline. The head man normally goes out to check in on the injury and the nature of it. Again, I do it out of respect for the kids competing. I like the message of sportsmanship that it sends. Just one coaches opinion, again.

I am pretty sure that it is a rule that coaches can not speak to players that are on the field during a referee stoppage. An injury timeout would fall under those guidelines. I have my players take a knee. Other coaches have returned the act in kind when my kids go down. I think it is out of respect for the competitors. I do not like the message that may be sent by ignoring an injury that has occurred. One coaches opinion.

I worked as an offensive coach for a spread shotgun team a few years back. We had these discussions regularly over the summer. We tried an under center formation for a season. We installed it during two a days and preseason. We used it in our first 3 games and ended up scrapping it. Our kids on the o line and our QB felt more comfortable executing the gun snap and blocking schemes from the two point stance. When we needed short yardage, we would bring in beef in the backfield, which it sounds like Highlands did. It came down to having our kids execute what they felt most confident executing- we did not have too many issues getting short yardage or executing in the red zone that season. We went to the state title game. We won state the next year with the same short yardage philosophy.

I agree because this will focus Coach Beatty and his team. they seemed to lack focus the last few weeks. 1 loss in a game you feel you should win will do wonders for igniting a sleeping giant. Trinity was going to run through 6A any way. I think we are going to see some really lopsided Trinity victories from a Shamrock squad with a renewed focus. 6A is about to get molly-whopped by the Rocks, IMO.
