Easy on UK#1fan. Anybody who drives the Highlands fans as crazy as UK#1fan does has a spot reserved in the BGP Hall of Fame.

Derek Smith, Brandent Englemon. People forget he played baseball until his senior year and then ran track for Holmes because of Michigan telling him to work on his speed.

Too bad he did not get a chance to play at a higher level football program. I think he would have made some waves on special teams in South Bend. LOL You know I'm kidding.

Although he went into the national baseball HOF as a pitcher, Jim Bunning from Southgate was a 3 sport star for St. Xavier in the late 40s. Probably not widely known that he went to Xavier University on a basketball scholarship and played an excellent split end on the gridiron.

If we are going to include guys who went to high school over the river, then Bob Arnzen as well at St. X.

Leo Foster from Holmes was a great basketball player, a multi-event track star and played for 4-5 years at 3rd, 2nd and short for the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets.

 

From what I was told by some very successful contemporaries of Leo Foster's, he is probably the all time best. An amazing, dominating athlete at whatever sport he played.

Any old-timers know if Bob Barton played football? I know he played b-ball and UK offered him a scholarship if I understand correctly. Obviously, he went pro baseball playing mainly for the Padres.

Derek Smith had a 2 or 3 run HR against Holy Cross in the Regional Finals in his sophomore season. Highlands won 5-3. I think he was runner up in both Basketball and Football his Sr. year also.

 

That's what I am talking about SSC. And when you say runner up-you mean in the STATE (for both football and basketball), not the region. I mean that is impressive. I liked the Randy Stegman reference too earlier in the thread.

Roger Walz from Highlands played football, basketball, baseball and tennis. He played football at U.C. and U.K.

I'm pretty sure Bob did not play football, but he was one of the best shooters I ever saw, and obviously he was a very good baseball player.

Before my time, but I am pretty sure Dick Vories has to be in this conversation.... recruited and signed by Adolph Rupp (until he blew ouit hsi knee) as a basketball player, played professional baseball in the Reds organization, and was, I believe, the rarest commodity, a 3 sport, 12 letterman athlete at the college level at Georgetown.....

Was he only a kicker in high school? What other position did he play in football? I wasn't aware he played other sports. Actually, I don't remember him as a standout athlete in high school in any sport, including kicking. But that it probably just bad memory or not paying attention by me.
